What the dealer said about my AC staying on all the time

I took it to the dealer today because the AC was staying on all the time. Yes seriously, when you turn the vent on and the ac button is off, ac is coming through the vents. No, defrost was not selected. Please check your Tundra for this!!!

    What the dealer/tech found:
The compressor/clutch comes on automatically when the fan switch is turned on. The ac button on or off has no effect on the clutch.

The shop foreman said he has seen this before. My impression is that they were surprised that I found the issue. I noticed it while using a lot of gas on a recent long road trip.

It was implied that this is a $$$ problem to fix. It will also take a while to find the exact problem.

Toyota corporate was called on this issue. I got the usual run around that they have never seen this before...bla bla bla bla.

My compressor now has 1,000's of miles of unnecessary wear and tear on it. Toyota, can I please have a new ac system?

Oh wait, according to my local dealer, Tundras are rock solid and never have any problems!!!!!!!

7/22/2016 update. Phone call.....The problem is with the circuit board in the center consol. They swapped the board with a new one and it started working properly but dont know what went wrong.

It took them 9 hours to do the job.

    7/22/2016
They just called back and said they do not know what the problem is and will be keeping the truck for many days to figure it out. The head shop steward is now in charge. Toyota corporate will be assisting.

    Thank goodness for warranties.

Just wondering if anyone else is having this issue?

Believe me, Toyota vehicles have problems, just not as many as the counterparts.

Good greif!! I ran my Taco with the AC on for 427,XXX miles. Still blows cold no failures no recharges. Im thinking running long durations with the pump off is what kills em. I hope my AC clutch stays on 90% of the time...
Not sure what the HP draw is cant be over 3-4 probly averages a lot less but Im not an AC expert either

Yeah, this. If you have your heater temp. control set to cold, the A/C automatically comes on and the vent system goes to recirculate. Is that what you did kayakmr?

Tundras have problems just like every other vehicle out there. Not as many mind you. With my tundra, check engine light came on at 58K miles. Brought it to a gas station, after filling, wouldn't start until I pressed the gas. Brought it in, said gas cap was leaking and gas tank flap wouldn't close. Got it fixed, no more problems.
Mind you, this is the first time in the shop since I bought my tundra. My cousins and uncles all have fords, they've had theirs in the shop twice or three times as much as me in the same amount of years.

Kinda confused by the original post, but as others have noted if your temperature setting is on "Max A/C", than the A/C and Recirculate automatically come on and it won't let you turn them off when it's on that temperature setting. If you want to turn either of those off, you will have to twist your temperature knob one click to the right taking it off of "Max A/C" and onto the 2nd coldest setting.

Confused me at first as well when I first got in the newer Tundras. Hope this helped.

You know, I just read it again slower. It now seems like he really is making a mountain out of a molehill. I mean "thousands of miles of unnecessary wear and tear"? Not to mention where I come from, NO guy is taken seriously if he types out "omg":rofl::rofl::rofl:

Compressors don't last forever I don't care what kind of vehicle you have. I've replaced a ton in my career. Hell I have seen them die in 1000 miles.

This MUST be something other than the temp dial turned all the way counterclockwise. Otherwise the dealer wouldn't be so befuddled by the problem.

I run my compressor every time I drive. The compressor oil is circulated when running so I don't see a downside.

this post is a joke. you think a truck loaded with electronics wont have a problem ever? problems happen, but they are rare with a tundra that's why we all have them right? probably talking about his ford

For all you that are taking wise cracks.....go out to your driveway and try it out.

I have the feeling that my truck is not the only one.

I am thankful this is all under warranty!

Tell me about it, started mowing my grass as soon as I got in from work. 3 acres with a push mower. Good exercise but hot as Hell!!
Topped it off with a good beer and about to take a nice cold shower then watch some tv with a couple more brewskis. All in all, good way to spend a late Friday afternoon

    Just thinking out loud here.....

I wonder if the circuit board is used in other Toyota products besides the Tundra?

So getting back to your problem, is the temperature control dial turned to the coldest setting when this occurs?

    No

    The dealer knows the problem.

Turn the fan multi switch on and the ac clutch/compressor automatically activates.

It does not matter if the fan multi switch is set at the hottest or coldest setting.

The only way to turn off the compressor is to turn the fan off.

OK, because by design, the A/C compressor comes on anytime the temp dial is turned completely counter-clockwise.
    It's in the owner's manual.

Guess you have a completely different problem. Good luck.

    Thanks for replying.....

I think i know what you are talking about. On my 2014, when you turn the fan knob all the way counter clockwise you hear a click and the ac switch/light automatically turns on.

My ac is on all the time regardless.

    Thank you

Dude, I get its a PITA and you're out the tundy for a few days or so, you're trying to find out what happened and let others know so they can get it fixed.

    Appreciate that.

With that said, look through ALL the threads in this forum, NO ONE comes out freaking out about anything calling for a recall and bitching about how the dealer said they were "rock solid" and "nothing will go wrong". It's under warranty, you don't have to pay for it, no problems there. Not to be an asshole, but you sounded like a woman PMSing in the middle of a chocolate Midol shortage. EVERY SINGLE vehicle out there have and will have problems at differing mileage. It's Murphy's Law.

I can guarantee you if you started out saying "hey guys, anyone had this problem blah blah compressor, blah blah A/C blah blah etc etc.? Any insights?" You'd have seen a completely different thread. Most of us are smart asses, call it like it is, "stick some duct tape on it and buff it out then top it off with a brew" kind of guys.
I've asked some stupid questions on this forum and got some stupid answers in return, it's all in good fun.

Good luck with your tundra and hope you get it back soon with a little less Murphy's on it! Now go crack open a nice beer or two and call it a day.
Look up the Beer B.S. Thread for some good ideas about which brew to try!! :bananadance:

Oh, and welcome to the site buddy!
