looking at getting some new tires in the future and I’m interested in a taller but more narrow tire. I love the look of narrow but tall tires and they’d be functional for me since where I live and work involves driving in deep snow from about late October to April. Anyone have any suggestions on sizes and brands?

285/75/18 duratrec or ridge grapplers. 35”x11”. I was gonna get them but ended up getting 295/70/18 cooper st maxx. Measure 34.6 x 11.5. I already had a set so I put one on as my spare and couldn’t justify the worse gas and no spare for the extra half inch plus those tires were 25$ more per tire. Do you have 18 or 17s

i wish, the closest iv run on the tundra to pizza cutters was 285/75/17. Id love to see a 35x10.5 or 11.5 (not.load range c either) but no one's except nitto (lr C) or interco make them and i have reached out numerous times to the other players who show no interest.

I ran 255/85/16s on my Tacoma and LOVED them.

I ran 255s on my Tacoma and liked them alot. Good mileage and they were great in the snow. Aired then down on the beach for a wide soft footprint. Very versatile when you go skinny. Just look at all the safari trucks like the old landcruiser and land rovers. They always run skinny tires and spend their whole life offroad.

I'm running BFG KO2s. Size is 34/10.5/17 and I mounted them on some Trail Edition 17x7.5" rims. Load range is D 8-ply. Very happy so far and they performed well off-road. IMG_1867.jpgIMG_1119.jpg

Running 265/70r18 Falken wildpeaks. 33x10.5, they have been awesome in the snow/ice so far this year. Wish I could find a 34x10.5r18 as I think that would be perfect.

Welcome! I live in snow country as well, get very deep where I live. I would highly suggest 275/70-R18. They are the same width as stock but 1" taller. Narrow look good, and cut through the snow like hot knife through butter!

On my Tacoma I ran 235/85R16 Duratracs with great results. Was a beast in deep snow, especially wearing jewelry (tire chains). Not really true pizza cutters available in 18’s, I’m running 275/70R18’s for winter.

    Function before sparkle.
I ran also 255/85r16 (which is essentially 33 x 10) tires on my Tacoma for years and it convinced me of the off-road abilities of a narrow but tall tire. The only disadvantage I ever found was flex on long interchanges/off ramps. It’s seat of the pants impression over real data, but an inch less width created much more lean.

As time passes with the Tundra, I will likely look for an equivalent like the 34’s shown above with a 17” Icon wheel. I do need to research the risk/reward of a narrow tire when towing a travel trailer first.

I'm on 285/75R18 Duratrac here in CO. Have a 35x12.50 Duratrac on our Wrangler and they aren't as good in snow. They tend to float a little more but Duratracs in snow are pretty awesome.

Did you have to get new UCAs or just choose to upgrade? I want to go with Bilstein 6112s in front at 2.5" and 5160s in the rear with a 1" shackle.

After doing a bunch of reading on here it just made sense to do the whole deal. The truck is off road a fair bit and the extra travel and peace of mind with the alignment being spot on are worth it.

I'm not sure what I ended up with lift wise but as I'm sure you know you're right on the border line at 2.5" and potentially needing UCAs. I'm sure there is a ton of info out there for that setup. This forum is awesome for knowledge and spending my money.

Are you running those on stock suspension? If so, any trimming needed?

    @landphil ,

Have you chained up your Tundra? Is it even feasible with factory width tires? I’m running the same size tires on my truck and would like chains as a safety net, if possible.

Great thread guys. Come time to replace, I’ll probably go with the same size TOYOs as I’m running right now, unless I can find a slightly taller, narrower tire that fits our trucks well.

Yessir. I’ve got a pair of heavy duty v-bar chains for the rear, and used them a couple times. (on unmaintained, steep forest service roads). They have cam tensioners, so easy to get tight, but there is lots of room on the rear for chains with 275/70R18s.

On the front, there is no room between the spindle / UCA and the sidewall to think of trying it with stock wheels. Never felt the need yet either though.

Thanks for your input, landphil. Much appreciated!

Ideally, I’d like to chain all four, but get what you’re saying Re; UCA. Seems like chaining the rears will have to do.

I’ve never needed them to get around on maintained roads. 18-20% grades with switchbacks that don’t see a snowplow or sand is a whole different animal.

And that’s my scenario. We spend a lot of time in the forestry and mountains, year round. Good tires definitely make a difference, but sometimes not enough. ;)
