Noise while taking off. Every time. Not abs.

So I have noticed that when I take off slowly I hear a slight clunk. Feels like it’s coming from my u joints or drive shaft under the center console on my 2015 tundra. When I have it on tow haul mode since I have more available get up it clunks harder and louder. It only happens when I take off from a dead stop as I can’t feel or hear it while moving, but it happens every single time I take off, not just after I turn on the truck. Any ideas? If it’s someth simple I can fix myself but visually everything looks fine. Truck drives fine too. Doesn’t seem to affect the truck. But damn is it annoying

 

Have you checked all u joints? Carrier bearing? If they worn or loose

Actually this happened in my wife's car in the trunk space for spare was part for her hitch receiver rolling around loose, she thought it was her shocks going out

 

I had a similar noise in my 14, started with about 3k miles IIRC. Clunk upon acceleration - every time. This was not the ABS self check noise.

After argueing with Toyota for like 5k miles, they sent out a field tech - they ended up replacing my transfer case. There was too much play within the assembly. Been noise free ever since. Worth a look at.

 

Well I know it’s not the center console as nothing is in it so it’s not that. I failed to mention that when I put in gear it makes the noise a bit. But that could be normal as I never really paid attention to it till recently. I did put in carrier bearing spacers when I put shims and shackles. But then I removed the pro shocks and put Kings all the way around and left the spacers in. Should I have taken them out? I was thinking about transfer case, but that would be the worst case. Damn. Looks like she’s going back to the dealership since apparently I bought the extended warranty and didn’t know it. I bought her as an impulse buy. Saw her in sf next to a Lexus LFA and traded our Rx350 so fast that I just paid for everything the salesperson had to offer. Was too excited.

 

Lifetime warranty on powertrain? I thought extended is 100k?

 

Did this start after your lift? Make sure it’s not something silly like the spare tire. And check the torque on your cam bolts.

 

Well I’m hoping that whatever it is it’s covered. Not sure if it matters, but could putting front and rear lockers on my truck void the warranty on the transfer case? That’s of course it’s the transfer case. Or any of the parts mentioned before(u joints, cv axle boots)? I know they are in my axles but just looking to see if the dealership would try and use that as an excuse. Also, I swear I greased up all the axle joints with the proper grease in all the joints and I feel like that’s when this all started, but could be wrong. I also found out that this was done only once since I’ve owned the truck. I thought the dealership was doing this I have a oil change and service package that I paid for when I bought it. I did it myself and noticed the valves had paint on them. I asked the service tech who always works on the truck and he said he never did it. The truck had 60k on it the first time.

 

Can’t be the spare as it’s not in the truck. I haven’t had the chance to make the custom mount for it. Can’t fit under the truck. And retorqued the cam bolts as soon as I got it from alignment in the parking lot. Don’t trust anyone to torque shit right. I check and do it myself pretty regularly.

 

Blows too cause this bitch was at the dealership for three weeks getting the cam shaft tower leak fixed. Was not happy about that. But the head mechanic is the only one allowed to work on my truck and got busy and they had a tough time getting the work approved and had to replace my water pump at the same time since that was leaking as well. Well at least that’s what they told me. But it’s fixed. Just sucks I will have to take her in again.

 

60K miles before the u-joints got greased? Ouch. Might be worth a closer look.

 

Ya I know. That’s 100% on me. Once I found out from other forum members that the dealership doesn’t do it for them I decided to do it myself to check and that is when I found original paint on all the joint valves. This forum has been extremely helpful with all kinds of issues and cool upgrade ideas.

 

I am going to call my service advisor tomorrow and see how it goes. I will post the results when I found out what’s up.

 

I took my 2018 in for the same issue. It happens each time I start up the truck and drive off, typically within the first 5 seconds of driving off. Won't happen again until I start the truck up again. The Toyota mechanic went in the truck with me so I could show him the noise since he was unable to find the noise when I dropped off the truck. Found out its the ABS self check. Even popped the hood and saw where the noise was coming from.

 

So I found out I paid for a platinum warranty of 75000 miles. I’m under it. But haven’t had the time to bring the truck in. One thing I have never done is tighten all the bolts on the driveshaft. Going to do that today and test drive it. Maybe it’s something simple. Also, not sure if I even need the CB carrier bearing drop kit I installed since I only have the Kings shocks and no shims. Should I remove it?

 

So no lift in the rear? Then yes, remove the CB spacers.

 

I did a two inch lift with custom Alcan leaf springs and stock shackles. I have Kings ext shocks.

 

Ok everyone. I found the problem. Turns out my drive shaft needed some grease. Lol. When I was greasing all five valves the one directly below the truck was sounding as if there was air in it. Greased the shit out of it till it didn’t make that air purging sound. Made sure all five points didn’t have the air purging and test drove it and clunk is gone. Hell ya!!

 

I grease mine till that popping sound happens and I start to see the grease pushing out the bushings. It may serve you good to double up on the greasing again in the next week or two to push out the dirt/debris that might have gotten in during the neglected time dry joints.

 

I would seriously consider replacing all 3 u-joints on the main driveline with new Spicer parts. (OEM is made by Spicer).

 

Thanks guys. I’ve done it twice in less than 500 miles so far. Might wait to see how long it takes to clunk again and figure out how to replace the u-joints in the meantime. If it’s easy enough for me to do I might have a go at it, but for now it’s gone and the truck drives great.

 

Did I read that correct? "Arguing" with Toyota?? I thought Toyota always do it right for their customers. I thought pulling teeth to get something done with with GM and Ford?? hmm..

Replacing u joints it relatively easy. Only replace them if worn out. You need to get the Tunny off all fours and check for any "play" with any of the joints. Replace accordingly. I thought the initial problem was the wifey/girlfriend yelling at you.... haha.

 

I have no way of getting it all four off the ground safely so dealership it goes. Just need to find the time to take her. The only time the wife yells at me is when I buy any parts, but once they’re on and she drives it. She’s like, “damn it does make a difference, I like it.” I’m like, “cool stop driving my truck. Drive your IS.” She doesn’t listen. It’s ok cause she cooks a home cooked meal every night for me for the past 10 years. So I think we have an even trade off cause I refuse to cook now that I know she can throw down. My wife only got mad cause it just got out of the dealership to fix the camshaft tower leak and water pump replacement that took three weeks. She told me to sell the truck at that time and I told she was crazy. I spent about close to 80k or more now with all my mods and truck. Never selling this money pit. But onto the same problem. After greasing the u joints. The noise went away for a day and came back. I recently put Kings shocks all the way around and new custom alcan leafs. I am going to retorque everything again to make sure it’s not anything I did. Whatever it is, it doesn’t seem to affect how it drives or any lost of performance, but annoying as hell.
