Buying 1st Tundra, what to get?

So I currently have a '14 Silverado LT (leather, dual AC, heated seats, etc.) I recently put some XD wheels and bigger tires, and now I'm having a lot of problems. More rattles, truck shakes at 72+ mph, along with some other things. So anyway, I'm looking for a new truck and considering the Tundra. I'd be giving up those few things I have on the Chevy though.

I've looked around and online for a while now and just not sure what to get. For sure the 5.7L Crewmax. My first question is if I want/need 4x4 or not. I've never had a need to use it, I really only want it for the look and to say I have a 4x4, ha. But if I never need it, why pay extra for it?

I do want something bigger and a beefier look though. They have them with the TSS Black AT package, which adds bigger tires, black wheels, black running boards, and black outs on the logos. That package is $4800 though. I wonder if I can add that for less if I went with a basic truck and did it myself? Also, what are your thoughts on the front end level kit? How dramatic does it change the look and in turn affect the MPG?

BTW, I can get it through an employee program from my father in law, so I can get a considerable discount. I just don't know which way to go. Thoughts?

Also, would you rather consider one that has the TRD Off Road Pkg? Not sure if that is something needed, or worth it.

Another thing, any idea when the '17 will come out? Should I wait for it?

I just bought the SR5 with TRD OR and will be replacing everything about it (the OR part) over time. I think SR5 level is perfect to start except for I like leather seats which I'll probably add Clazzio for $500

They are covers and you don't remove the existing fabric. $499 plus a coupon sometimes for a few solid colors. Any combos make it $599 or more depending on what you want.

As for waiting for the 2017 I'd say only if you want to pay more. Mine went for $5k+ off MSRP

And I think Tacoma is cannibalizing the Tundra market right now. The price I paid is pretty much same price as Tacoma for twice the truck.

My wife just bought a new '16 Tacoma TRD Sport a few weeks ago. Did the front end level and 20" XD / 285/55R20 tires to the deal. It's awesome!

That's the truck I almost bought until I happened to ask my sales person about the Tundra. I love the hood scoop look and the '16 styling. But I couldn't pass up the Tundra interior. Almost did the CrewMax but with no small children I decided on Double Cab.

Yeah, it looks bad ass. Its a good truck for her. The Tundra would be too big, she'd hit everything, haha.

With your discount I'd probably buy something higher than an SR5, but that's me.

I'm on the fence about getting a Limited, but I hate that wood accent in the dash. The Platinum and 1974 are just too much. Would love the TRD Pro, but 60K is way over my budget. The employee discount isn't as great as you'd think. That with the rebates, I'm about 6k off the MSRP.

Like Ron said, I think SR5 is the way to go if you're gonna mod it. I did the same and love it. Orrrr you can get a used platinum or pro for less. Does the discount apply to those?
My truck was 2 years old and had 23k miles on it. Got a great deal, so couldn't pass it up. (Chevy crapped out on me. Wheels fell off.....literally)

if you look at resale value, I believe TRD crewmax 5.7L 4x4 holds it best. After you can customize it the way you want. rims/tires and just a level kit makes it a lot more aggressive.

I got the SR5 Texas edition which is essentially the chrome version of the SR5 TSS edition. and like the TSS edition, it comes with the SR5 upgrade package. The upgrade package gives you the 38 gallon tank, 9 speaker entune premium radio with navigation, tow package, power drivers seat, center console, and more. For me, it was worth the cost and I didn't feel the need to upgrade the wheels and tires. I like the look of both the Texas and TSS editions.

make the switch. you wont regret it :)

Yeah, I'm liking the TSS Black AT more and more. Maybe add the front level kit and want to change the grill to the TRD Pro, or possibly an aftermarket mesh grill.

Wes, I'm not sure what the price difference is between a 2WD vs 4WD Tundra, but I recommend that you go with the 5.7L 4X4 SR5. These Tundras are built to last. You may find yourself in a situation/place where you may wish you had a 4X4 eventually. If you can afford the 4X4 CMAX SR5, you can always upgrade stereo, suspension, whatever. There are a few guys here that regret getting the 4.6L and wish they got the 5.7L for example. Or bought a 2WD but then got the 4X4. Think ahead. If you truly don't see a need for a 4X4 then don't waste your money. Go with the 2WD. We will still help empty your wallet with the 2WD version......:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

You didn't mention if you have the need to haul loads that would include lawn tractors, etc. The CrewC is available only in the 5.5 bed in which case you will never be to load motorized lawn tractors etc, into the bed, you will need to buy a trailer to load & haul stuff, including 2x4s. The CrewC is only good for throwing firewood logs into the back of it, or only loading trash cans for the next trip to the recycling center.

The time it takes you to hitch & unhitch & do tie downs in an open bed utility trailer will surprise you, then you need to figure out where you will park the thing when when it's not in use. On top of these issues it requires licensing & registration or you can't put it on the road.

I bought the Limited DC with the 6.5 bed to avoid the need to put out yet another 1k$ for an open bed utility trailer, I would have bought the Limited with an 8 foot bed if it would have been available, I don't like those 2x4s hanging over the edge of the tailgate, but you can't have everything, it was more important that I be able to expediently load my toys than load lumber, but if you're not a homeowner with many acres of property to manage like I have then these hauling issues may not present issues you need to consider.

I simply think of a CrewC as an oversized car & with my lifestyle living in hilly rural countryside where we measure the depths of snow in "feet" making the CrewC almost pointless as almost nobody around here owns a CrewC much less a car. Ask anyone around here what a "car" is & all you'll get are dumb looks & they'll like as not ask for a definition of the word. My other truck is a 4Runner, and I trust that more in winter than I would my Tundra.

The 2WD with the TSS and things I want is just under 45K. With my discount and rebates, I'm about 38K. I can get a 4WD with the TRD off road package for just over 45K purchase price 39K, but doesn't have the wheels and things i want, plus I've only ever seen that TRD package in the "Inferno" color. The 4WD with the TSS and what I want will be just under 46K, making my price about 40-41K. So not a huge difference, but 3-4K.

To this point in my life, I've never had a need for 4WD, so its a want thing over a need and can afford thing. Ha..
