The Land Yacht 2.0 - Army Green TRD Pro Build

Whole lotta purdy right there. Any thoughts about doing a front bypass in addition to the 3.0's in the future?

 

I really wanted to, but I just can't justify it with the terrain I wheel in currently. My job has me in the Midwest for the foreseeable future and there isn't much space out here to really open up a truck on whoops. That's kind of why I went with the 3.0s. I wanted more dampening capability, but the cost wasn't ridiculous vs going with 4 shocks for just the front. I am due to move to the DFW area in a few years, which would give me easier access to desert type areas, so probably then. For now, I think I am going to use the cash i would spend on the secondaries and am looking to maybe pick up the Total Chaos LCAs. Just trying to find a good deal, but I may just be hoping for the impossible. Also, there has been teasers posted on Camburg's instagram for fabricated spindles, so that may be worth the investment vs the shocks. They should also be coming out with a fabricated LCA too though, but not sure on timing, which may require TC to lower their prices. Here's to wishing....

 

I feel ya, the costs I've heard for secondaries definitely thins the wallet pretty rapidly. Whats the difference between fabricated spindles and what comes on the truck stock?

 

Strength. Fabricated ones are beef. Where stock spindles aren’t. Total chaos makes the gussets, but apparently they still see bent spindles. My assumption is from people welding them without preheating, then post heating and annealing.

 

Damn, those look like pure beef. I'd think you'd have to try pretty hard to bend a gussetted spindle, but I'm a personal believer in overkill.

That's kind of my thinking and why I ordered the Total Chaos spindle gussets. Fab'd spindles are cool, but something would have to go really wrong to bend the stock spindles with gussets. Either that or a terrible welder, I am by no means a pro, so... that's always a possibility, ha!

Good God, I still can't stop looking at your setup! It's Dara (5.7_trdprom), I knew I was following your build somewhere and it was here haha! I saw that camburg posted up their beefed up spindles also, I think I might have to wait til they come out with the tundra spindle. I would love to them my funds for those beefed up spindles to make my front end complete. I just received my secondary bypasses yesterday also. Now I'm just having a hard debate about switching to 3.0 in the rear or leave the 2.5's. I do however, want to get a set of U748's!

Can't wait to see all those blue blings get put on your truck!!!

Otherwise.... back home for the holidays and one my buddies who is just getting into wheeling, wanted to go wheeling. He was tired of posted driveway shots on the gram, so it was off to the local-ish OHV area in Tuttle Creek. He didn't really realize it, but I was definitely willing to sacrifice his bumpers. He wasn't exactly on board with that idea at the beginning, but ended up without any choice once we started hitting some obstacles.

We spent most of the day in the 4runner, but I did manage to get my pile high-centered. My truck needs more height and bigger tires, but it sure as hell isn't a rock crawler...

Finally, we both ended up with smashed bumpers in the same spot. We both had a good chuckle at that.

 

Bummed I wasn’t able to meet you guys at Tuttle. What part of KC does your buddy reside in? There is a group on Facebook, Kansas City Toyota Club if he is ever looking for some more local people to wheel with.

I’ll keep you posted about the DBBB Trip. It’s probably not likely, but miracles do happen! Haha

Yeah, he’s apart of the KCTC. Actually, a couple of the guys I went to school with are very active members of that club. He hasn’t gone out with them yet, but I think has gone to a meet.

 

Yeah, I hear you there. I have a good bit of experience behind the squirt gun. I’m even OK at TIG welding, which is what I will probably use to weld these up. I can control the heat a little better that way.

 

Oh awesome. I just joined the group a few months ago. A few good wheelers in the group. Most don’t leave the pavement...

Reading this thread is like reading "Dear Penthouse". I just drool over all the mods fellow Tundra owners have done. I a HAD a $3K spend mod budget but after reading and seeing what you guys have done just bumped it to more than double. I gotta stop reading these threads.

Its Ok. No go for me either. We had some equipment go down, soo.... I'll be making OT trying to get this place running. What sucks is that its supposed to be 60 degrees here all weekend...............

Yeah, it’s the Camburg hydro hump kit that is designed for the Deaver U748 leafs and 1.5” shackles. It calls for Fox 2.0x2.5 bumps. Ordered those from @sdhq_offroad during their Black Friday deal. Just waiting for them to come in.


In other news, got a hell of a deal from @deedubb for some stock spindles. Thanks again bud!

I wanted the extra set to weld the @TOTAL CHAOS gussets off the truck, so it isn’t down extra time during the install. Looks like I have a hot date with an Esab Rebel 235 this weekend. Pun intended.....

 

Im a Tundra NewB and i have two questions about this post in paticular. First, are these pics with stock suspension?
Second, Is the TRD Pro suspension higher that a regular 2018 4X4?

I love the look and im not really ready to lift or level the truck yet....

Technically, it is stock suspension but not the most common stock suspension. As you mentioned, this is the TRD Pro suspension. It does raise the front of the truck, roughly 2”. The rear is the same leafs, just different shocks.

Si. As soon as I find one that raises the factory hitch. I keep dragging that freaking thing everywhere, but no one makes a good looking rear bumper with a raised hitch. The Westin one accomplishes what I want to do, but it’s kind of ugly... I’ve reached out to a couple companies to see if they are interested, but so far nada. I did order the Camburg front bumper though, so that’s coming.

Looking forward to seeing your Kings installed. The adjustability of having front bypasses with compression and rebound is nice. Just some food for thought for you .

 

I mean........I want to say yes, but oofff that’s some commitment right there. If I could retain the liners for the bed, I’d probably do it.

I think the answer to this is kind of.....? Ha. Tail pipes are coming off as soon as I’m not being lazy to pull them off and weld up some stainless turn downs. Otherwise they will get destroyed. Also been meaning to weld in a crossover on the TRD exhaust since I absolutely HATE how it chops under load.

Anyway, I do really want bypasses for the front but just don’t have terrain here to stretch the legs of secondary bypasses, so it’s really hard to justify the extra $$$

 

Small update. Spent basically the whole day welding up the total chaos spindle gussets. I was super worried about warping them, so I took my time. Pre-heated these suckers in the kitchen oven to 200 degrees F, then ran 4-6” of weld, let cool, welded 4-6” again, let cool, rinse & repeat. All the while trying to make sure I kept the heat nice and even. Once finished, I preheated the oven to 350 degrees, shut it off and am letting these suckers cool down in there until tomorrow morning.

Pretty happy with how these turned out, assuming I didn’t warp them. Also pretty happy with how the welds turned out. Hadn’t been under the hood with a squirt gun in over 4 mos, but I do need to work on my start/stop transitions.

At one point in our life, my wife wouldn’t be sure about this, but she’s a trooper and realized she married into the Offroad lifestyle, thus parts in the oven are not outside the norm anymore.
