Back In A Tundra

After a somewhat disappointing experience with a 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport, I've rejoined the Tundra ranks. I picked up a Sunset Bronze DC Limited TRD OR for $42K out the door. A comparable Ford or GM was $50K+. I drove both an F-150 and Silverado and was unimpressed. The Tundra was clearly better than either, except for a couple MPG less. I have a Kia that gets nearly 40 MPG highway, so I can use than for long trips when I actually care about gas mileage. This thing is too nice for me!

I have the same truck, year, & color. Got 1800 miles on it now.

 

Good looking ride! I actually feel that color makes the Tundra look even tougher than any other color.

 

StRanger, pictures of mine above. Prefer your white leather over my dark gray, it would have made the hair from our German Shepherd harder to see. When my wife is with me, she makes me put the cage in the bed for the mutt to ride in, she doesn't like sharing her clothes with that of some mutt.

 

I ordered the 2016 Taco with the new 6 speed manual having only driven an automatic. The transmission felt like it belonged in a 3/4 ton. It was stiff, clunky, and not at all enjoyable to drive (and I love manuals). The steering was another major problem. It would always wander left and right at highway speeds. It wasn't like an alignment issue where it pulled one direction either; it was left, right, left, right, always requiring corrections. It was tiring to drive any distance. The new 3.5l was ok, but the torque was nonexistent below 2800 rpm. I did get 22 mpg average, which was better than the EPA highway rating.

Just got a tan Softopper yesterday (pics coming soon). Nerf bars and 3M paint protection film are on their way. I'll probably use Herculiner or something similar on the bed instead or shelling out the $ for Line-X. I need to replace the shift knob with something better looking and that's the extent of my plans right now. Maybe a small subwoofer. No suspension mods or big wheels/tires in the plans right now, but we'll see.

My 3 Huskies aren't going anywhere near the inside of my truck, but the lighter colored leather would definitely hide the hair better if I had to put one inside. I got a Softopper to safely contain them in the back. They shed a massive amount of hair!

 

My husky went with me a couple of weeks ago on my vacation. I still can't get all the fur out. A lost cause.

 

I almost think they rushed it into production too fast trying to protect their market share from the new GM midsize trucks (which are actually very good-got to drive a Canyon SLT for a while). I'm in between Durango and Cortez up in the sticks. Its a bit isolated, but I love this part of the country.

 

Another '16 Taco owner crosses over. I'm seeing a trend.

 

Get a cage like I had even when I had the Taco. When that G Shepherd was a pup it was just fine, then she started growing & to top it off always wanted to sit in the passenger seat which made it harder to use the manual shift because her head would extend beyond the stick when she lay down , then after a few months she didn't even fit in the back of the DC Taco & you should have seen the mess while she was shedding her baby fur, WOW. One day as I was passing a garage sale I saw a cage, stopped & it was what these people had used for their Shepherd until it died & they had no plans to replace it, so I bought it at a fraction of the price of a new one (a good well made large cage can set you back hundreds), problem solved.

One time I have let her ride in the cab of the Tundra, and it was a mess even after only a short trip of a few miles. The cage is a little on the heavy side & I just didn't feel like loading it for the short trip & that mutt wasn't taking NO for an answer when I told her she was not going. All I need to do is walk in the direction of that pickup & she charges full bore ahead of me hoping for another ride. What is there about big dogs & pickup trucks? They seem to be made for one another.

 

My 15 month old lab loves riding in the pickup too, he gets more excited going in the pickup than anything lol.

 

Yup. I did the same thing as not as quite extensive on the Tundra. I'm expecting some scratches.
