    Hey Guys,

I've owned a Tacoma for the last 10 years and it's been good to me. 08 Radiant Red w/ 3" OME lift, SEMA wheels, and JBA Control Arms but its time to move on to a bigger truck.

Ive been looking at both the Sport and the Platinum since I like the paint matched look. One of the options I was looking at was the Toyota leather upgrade for the Sport which came out to ~1500 extra installed by the dealer. The only thing I've been unable to find is how does this leather compare to the leather I would get in the Platinum? Obviously I would loose some bells and whistles but the overall package package would still be about 3200 cheaper than what I was quoted for the Platinum.

Any thoughts on the aftermarket leather quality vs the factory Platinum?

I have a 18 sport. I am not aware of a factory leather upgrade. The dealer will send the truck out to a local auto shop that specializes in Katskin / Alea installation. These leather kits vary in leather quality and final fit/finish depend on the install shop. You can request full leather covers from Katskin/ Alea for added cost. Most OEM factory "leather" seats are not all leather. For an OEM to advertise as "leather interior" they only have to meet 51-70% real leather content. below 51% they can advertise as "leatherette".
The 3200 gets you OEM leather/ sunroof /dual climate control HVAC/ + Cooled seats.
Different people have different opinions on what quality leather is
What is your concept of quality leather? No seat wrinkles? No natural markings (scars / bug bites)? Material is soft and durable?

You know, I never really thought about what I quantify as good leather but probably soft and durable. The dealer has a SR5 Off Road on the lot with the upgrade so I was able to see it, looked nice it was black with a nice orange bead that went around all the seams (Inferno Color Truck).

I actually didn't ask in detail but I will see if they send it out or if its something they do in house. Its actually a good point about install quality since some of the items I like on the Sport could be easily added to the Platinum like sway bars, bed liner and deck rails but the cost margin gets bigger and bigger as well.

Honestly I’ve had the 1794 with the Lexus grade leather and it is definitely softer and nicer than the sr5 leather but I feel the sr5 leather is more sturdy and durable...
    Maybe that’s just me

Platinum and 1794 trims have the superior leather - much softer and supple compared to the Limited trim.

Excellent thank you guys, now I just need to decide on which one I cant live without.

I love the look of the 1794 but wish it was paint matched. After a week I assume I wouldn't even notice it, plus down the road I can get a new grill and I assume I can get a paint matched trim piece around the grill. I don't really off road at all so I would probably add the TRD sway bars to help with the road manners and eventually add a leveling kit.

I agree they'll likely Katzkin it although I've read people say it's just as good if not better than the basic Toyota leather. But I don't think it'll have cooled seats like the Platinum (built-in fan). That's probably an even higher upgrade as you would have to request perforated Katzkins and a cooling kit in addition to the seat heaters that I'm assuming is included in the basic leather upgrade.

See if they have any on the lot that they "upgraded" the leather, compare it to Limited leather seats, and compare it to Platinum/1794 leather seats just to get a feel for the different leather grades and what you find acceptable or not.

My wife has a 2008 lexus rx350 and we just recently bought our 2018 1794 tundra. We both say its like lexus made a truck. The leather and the stiching is of comparible quality. The lexus doesnt get driven very much anymore!

I personally installed Katzkin “premium” leather seats in my 2018 Tundra TRD sport about a year ago. I recently traded it in for a 19 platinum. I can tell you that the Katzkin leather was definitely much more softer than the platinum leather. Thought Katzkin was better leather overall in my opinion. I was really happy with it. Save some money and do it yourself. Not bad of a job to do.

I just made the decision to go with the Sport and have them add leather to the seats vs going with a limited or platinum. They will be installed with Katzkin leather which my wife has had in her 4Runner and Jeep. It is really good leather and will hold up for a really long time. Find my build and look for photos for when they install the leather. I am guessing its a few weeks out now.

They don't actually. They are just vented. They are not actually air conditioned seats like some competitors. I had an '11 Platinum and found in the Florida summers they didn't work worth a hoot. Especially with black leather.

This. I bought a 2018 Sport as well and will eventually add Katzkin leather.

I have a 2012 Tacoma Sport that had Katzkin installed at purchase through the dealer. My son was an infant and if you have kids, you know what that brings. My dog is always back there with the kid. A few years ago, the dog hurled up some disgusting shit smelling vomit all over the backseat and through the cracks and into the perforation of the leather. It was bad enough we threw away the car seat. It was terrible, but the Katzkin survived and I drive the Tacoma every day.

I vote for a Sport with Katzkin over the Platinum. Cheaper and the less chrome the better.

I am not a fan of perforated leather for the reason of liquid spills.

Thanks for all the feed back, going to go with the white sport and add leather. This will leave me some cash for a leveling kit and all will be right in the world. Going to do the black leather covers with the white pinstripe outline thing on the seams.

This is an add on offered by the dealership. Most likely there's a local shop doing the job for 800 and the dealer has an in with them.

My dad had this offered on his 08 runner and it held up EXTREMELY well. Also you probably won't have to deal with the perforations which is much harder to keep clean.

On top of that my little brother was bequeathed the car and found a card in the glovebox from the upholstery shop. He called them and had a small repair done for free as they had a warranty.

They are basically glorified katskinz. They're probably real nice but you could do it yourself for less than a grand.

I havent looked into it outside the dealer for a full install but i know the full katzkin leather to purchase yourself online is close to $1000. Install is time consuming so i would asume atleast $500 to have a shop do it.
I figured i was paying for the leather, install, markup and warranty through toyota

I figured black truck, black leather would benefit from some perforation cooling. Learned the hard way.

I really hate black exteriors with black interiors.
Worst color combo where I am at.
    Too hot for So Cal!

I get only cars with ventilated seats and never turn on heated in So Cal...

So this took a severe left turn today. Went to a different dealer that had the cement color in stock and... well that's the one, I wanted that color more than any interior leather and I didn't even know it. Bought a 19 Cement Limited TRD Off Road and I couldn't be happier. I know the leather isn't as good as the Platinum or 1794 but I'm stoked on the color!

Congrats on your choice!, It's a truck, it's not worth getting too hung up on what quality tier the leather is. All choices will wear better than cloth!
