Automatic running boards

I am looking at putting on automatic running boards on my truck. Does anyone have any experience with these? Do you recommend them? If so what brand? Thanks guys

 

My uncle has some on his F150. Not sure what brand but I LOVE them! Takes some getting used to. EVERYTIME I go to get something out of his truck, I forget they're there and puts a nice hurting on my lower shins as soon as I open the door

Nope, he's had his for umm....4 or 5 years and not a problem with it. He's a heavy dude too. Pushing 300, and steps on it everytime, and I don't mean gently.

Recently one of my customers was showing me his 2014 Tundra and i noticed his auto running boards when he opened the door so i asked about them. He says they are Amp Research and he says they are very durable. He is about 270 lbs. and he was jumping up and down making the whole truck rock so i was pretty impressed. I want to get them on mine now.

I've got the AMP Research PowerSteps on my truck. Had them on my previous (other bowtie brand) for 3 years. No issues on either one. Removed the OEM side steps / running boards from my Tundra and after some assembly, they bolt right up. They provide a power harness that runs from the engine bay (battery) to each side and provide instructions of where to connect them in the kick panels (two wires on each side). Each side operates independently with its respective side doors and they include LED lights to light the way. I took my time and it took me about 4 hours with breaks. My wife and mom are short, so the height is great for them - they are about 1 ½ to 2 inches lower than the OEM steps and they fold nicely out of the way when the door is closed. I live in Texas where it doesn't get very cold, but I have read where some had them freeze, especially after driving in snow / slush. But if they sense any resistance, they will not extend. I also have them and love them. They have been on my truck for about a year now and no problems at all.
They are pricey, but well worth it, in my opinion.

I haven't got any yet. I have to budget for them. They look awesome though.

Is there an option to leave it in the downtown position for the times of freezing rain or blizzard?

Yes - if the sense the least bit of pressure (in either direction), they will stay up or down. Just put your foot on them when down, and close the door, they will stay down.

 

As 53flattie says, they will stay up or down with any type of resistance, but you wouldn't want to drive with them in the down position. They are about 3 inches lower than a stock OEM running board and would most likely get damaged.

 

Still going back and forth. 1k wow that's a lot. So much other fun things I can do to the truck for that price. Plus I have running board right now. I think this project will be saved for one of the final projects. I do thank everyone for their views. I will be getting them.

 

Amp research are the best and I recommend

 

Here's my $0.02. One common problem I read about these steps is that they tend to freeze in the winter. The steps apparently freeze in mid-position. OP, since you live in North Carolina, you may encounter some problems.

I also like the fact that my OEM steps tend to protect the side of my truck from door dingers, especially now my truck is lifted.

For these two reasons, I've crossed off this item from my list of future mods.

 

I like them and was going to purchase until I heard about the freezing issue; I live in Chicago. If there was a fix to this then I'd be a buyer.

I had them on my previous truck (2013 platinum) and in winter they froze all the time and there was always ice forming in the hinges and I couldn't use them at all and now I removed them and put them on my rcsb (had to cut them) and now both motors broke and they're stuck closed. I found new motors but they're 400$ so not sure if it's worth it. But I would still recommend it if you live where there's not too much snow or salt because they're cool to have and I like the look of "no running boards" when the doors are closed. Makes the truck look more lifted!
