I feel the built in Nav is a waste of money and always use Waze anyway. The newer Toyotas are coming with the Apple mirroring built in but not on the 2019 Tundras. Considering going with a unit from crutchfields.com for about 6 to 9 hundred installed to replace the OEM HU. Any insight and shared experience is appreciated.

No, but I could have if that is all I was doing...that and I ended up having rotator cuff surgery and I didn’t want to have to wait 6 months before I could get to it lol. I used the idata link maestro with the adapter for the factory gps and they installed the Bluetooth mic in the factory location. I believe this unit has the highest resolution currently on the market. I did at some point this year. I’m very happy with it. Apple CarPlay loads fast and been flawless. I tried Waze and it works but I’m just use to Apple Maps.

The rep I spoke with from Crutchfields was suggesting a Pioneer unit. What pushed you to decide on the unit you have?

I had a Pioneer in my 4Runner and installed another Pioneer in my son’s 4Runner both NEX models with Apple CarPlay. His was hit or miss on connecting. I’m sure the newer units are good but ultimately I read and watched some reviews that were really positive on the Kenwood including posts here.....then I wanted they higher resolution display and man does it look good.

Not many choices plus I charge my phone anyway. Have a mount next to the radio and just plug and play. Easy.

So with Carplay that has google maps etc what would be the need for a navigation unit?

I wanted something simple for my project truck. I purchased a discontinued but new Kenwood 7704S off Amazon. I didn't want navigation or a disc player but needed apple car play. It was a basic unit that I think Kenwood upgraded with a nicer screen after about six months. Anyway I got a great deal on it and also bought the Meta install kit and wiring harness off amazon as well. My buddy on here @GreatAvalon did the install. I love this thing it runs front and rear cameras, I can use apple maps, google maps or waze no issues and the sound with stock speakers is amazing. Anyway long story short total parts were less than $400.

Apple CarPlay just added Google Maps and Waze as an option With iOS 12. I just use Apple maps for navigation so the crappy Entune/Toyota is not needed. Thank goodness.

Another 9906s user here. It’s nice to have waze right on the head unit now. Carplay is great integration, even if it’s wired. I moved the factory usb outlet to the center console so the wire comes out of there to the phone. Easily stashed and out of sight for the most part.

I find the screen to be a little bright at night but can live with it. I miss the big volume knob but use SWC anyways so no loss there. Overall happy to ditch stock package.

I noticed the brightness as well but as you pointed out, not too bad. It does make me wonder why it couldn’t be integrated with the dimmer switch in the truck. Oh well. I haven’t used knobs on a headunit for 10 years so I’m used to it.

Oh yea, I can now see tire psi for each tire as well as other vehicle info on the 9906....a nice to have.

Dimming is a must have option for me. I like it blacked out inside the cab at night.

The 9906 is probably like any other aftermarket. I’d find a dealer and checkout all the units and ask about integrating with the dimmer switch. Just beyond my expertise.

I love that on the stock unit you can turn it off completely while still having music playing etc. I think on Crutchfield it will show which units have dimming ability

You can turn off the all of them I believe. I know you can with the 9906. I just don’t do it.

The unit dims, just not enough. I like my ***t nearly unreadable on dark trips. And even when you turn the display off on the 9906, there is still a slight annoying backlight glow. I have been covering it w a rag. But aside from that it’s good

I just hope that new redesign tundras have carplay/android auto as standard HU. this would be a huge plus for me

I think this is why Toyota is hesitant with the two..

    CarPlay Privacy
Due to Apple's commitment to user privacy, CarPlay collects very little data from users and car manufacturers. According to information released by Porsche, Apple only collects information on whether a car is accelerating while CarPlay is in use.

This is in stark contrast to Android Auto, which collects a lot more car data when in use. Google collects vehicle speed, oil and coolant temperature, throttle position, and engine revs, constituting "a full OBD2 dump whenever someone activates Android Auto."

CarPlay on Android HU, not for everyone, just showing it's an option. Your physical HVAC dials are replaced so it's a big vertical screen.

Exit the CP app and it's basically an android tablet with steering controls to play videos for family, stream Spotify/Pandora, do Google searches, run its own Waze etc. Mine has a big GPS based digital speedo on the home screen because my analog is off from larger tires (I didn't bother getting a Hypertech cali).

zbox apk or the one instructed with your dongle, which dongle did you buy? btw, that pic up there is on gen 1 but people have gotten CP to work on both gens. I'm actually not using it because I'm jailbroken on iOS11 and prefer jb over CP.

There should have been instructions included with your dongle that instructs where to download the app you need for the domgle to work.
