Hey team. I had some starting issues last winter. So I replaced the battery first. Then the starter next. Didn’t have an issue until this year when the weather started getting cold again. So know it seems to be doing similar things.
Go to start in morning battery is dead.
Then I’ll boost it like normal.

Yesterday I drove it to a few stores shutting it off and starting it a few times no issue.
Came home to unload some stuff in the shop before parking in front the house. So I shut it off and ran into the shop. Came back out- wouldn’t start again. Just got the solenoid click. Boosted it like normal and parked it.

Battery leads are clean. New battery. New starter. New daily aggression towards my baby:(

Check the voltage to the battery when it’s running. Check all the ground connections for corrosion. Sounds like when the temperature is warm you don’t have an issue it’s when the cold cranking apps come into play.

Also make sure your alternator is working, sounds like a charging problem to me.

I was kind of wondering that also. Is there anyway the alternator would charge intermittently?

Voltage prior to a failed start was 11.57

After boost running power was 14.01. Seems like alternator is charging for now

Check the voltage coming out from alternator, should be around 13.5 to 14.5v, you may have a short somewhere draining the battery when the truck isn’t running.

Well. Don’t really know what to say. I think my year old battery is pooched. Voltage drops to 7 when I turn the truck over. What kind of cold cranking amps you guys run on your trucks?

Think my brake controller could be drawing power while truck is off?

I cleaned the leads of and covered everything in dialectic grease. All the grounds look good on the truck. Alternator wiring looks clean.

I’ve got .08 amp draw when the truck is shut off. Only fuse i can see that makes any difference is Ecu-b1. Does change draw when I pull it out, but when I put it back in it hopes up to .28 then levels back out to .08

Haven’t checked the command start fuse yet. I gave up for the night. Next time I have a look I’ll start there. Truck and command start are ten years old so an old wire connection isn’t far fetched

Have that battery load tested. New / newer does not always = good.

An 80 milliamp draw from an ECU is not an issue.

That’s fair. I should bring it to where I bought it (crappy tire) and have them test it.

Where you bought it from might not be so inclined to fail the battery. If they test it as okay I’d get another opinion.

Well. I guess I can’t complain too much about Canadian tire. They exchanged the battery no questions asked. I levelled up and bought the biggest battery that physically will fit. Only paid $30. Truck turns over instantly now too which a bonus. I’ll have to stack two Coachbuilder shims to fix the tundra lean now cause it’s heavier haha. Hopefully this is the end of my starting woes.
    Thanks for the help guys.

FYI - you might be posting this again in another year. Sounds like that’s a crap battery.
I dealt with the same issue before - Optima’s after they moved production to Mexico. I wouldn’t have ever guessed, but went through 3 optimas in 4 years (all replaced for free). Not normal, they just suck now LOL.
Smartened up and switched to a Napa battery.

I found one positive review - but the guy bought it in Nov 2015 and said it was great 3 months later in Jan 2016.

Ah shit. The reason I bought a battery there in the first place last year was all the other spots (Napa is my go to) didn’t have anything in stock for me. I’m committed at this point with warranty. Ah well I guess I’ll see what happens haha. Thanks for that info tho

Yep! Good news is you get a free one every year :D
Just hope you don’t find out the hard way up in the woods in the middle of nowhere. ;)
