I'm going to do an RTT for comfort for the lady and the boy for the upcoming summer. I have read just about every post I can find but before I pull the trigger on my next set of mods was looking for some insight so I don’t have to buy twice! Thanks in advance!

    1. I was considering leveling the truck. But given the weight of the bed rack and RTT I think this is a bad idea to avoid bro lean. Realistically if I do some CO exploring but nothing crazy as far as wheeling (I do want to get to some remote spots with some fishing involved), if I do the Toytec eibachs up front (to give you an idea on general price [don’t need reservoirs I’m not that off road]), given those or the 6112’s up front how crazy does the rear suspension need to be?

    2. I think I read something about “bed stabilizers” to prevent cracking. Is this an absolute must?

    3. For my CO peeps... is there a company that you would recommend just saying “here’s my truck just do it right and don’t rip me off” with x budget? (Considering bedslides, bed rack etc etc) I love researching this stuff but man I need someone to trust. (RSG is the only one I wouldn’t consider (cost and arrogance rubbed me the wrong way), all other options open.) I am in some initial talks with RCI.

That was a lot and at the next meetup I will be buying the first round!

I should say budget with tent $5-8k

And that I’m not going to do a TT right now, the boy needs to be in a tent. That can be later.

    First off welcome from Texas!

    1) I went with the 6112s at the 1.9" setting and love it. It is tall enough to see the height adjustment, but still short enough to get into most parking garages. It is also the PRO height which makes adding 285s or 295s not a problem.

    2) I am picking up the SDHQ bed stabilizers for this very reason. I plan to get a hard shell RTT and want the added security. I also went with SDHQ because their setup is hidden so it won't interfere with anything in the bed.

    3) Sorry, I am not from CO, but for the bed rack I plan on using Relentless's 3 bar setup.

    Thanks for the input!
So you’re level. Do you think the bed is going to sag with the added weight?

I’d think you couldn’t go wrong with either Bilsteins or the Eibach coilovers, not sure on adjustability on the latter though. If you’re worried about bro lean you could always add a 3/4 or 1” shackle to help with the sag.

I’d trust ToyTec to do the install, I believe they’re doing them again. I assume you live in Denver/Front Range?

@Toytec Lifts would add good input here.

Yes, it will. That is why I am installing 5160s and Toytec shackles on the middle setting tomorrow. Already getting ahead of that headache.

@Toytec Lifts has competitive pricing and great service in my opinion. I don't have any experience with a RTT so I'm no help there. Hope to meet you at the next meetup.

Awesome. I’m going to reach out to them and @RCIoffroad . I think I have some direction. Still some questions on suspension, and bed slides but I’m almost there!

Not need to over think it. Just pick a tent, figure out how you want to mount it and be on your way. I ran a hardshell RTT on top of my unreinforced cap for a 6000 mile trip on a stock Tundra with no issues. You can just run some crossbars in your bed and mount it on there.

Tents are getting cheap now. You can have a decent setup for less than $1500, or even under a grand.

How tall are you, @2016SR5CO, how tall are you, and will you ever have need to fit more than 2 adults and a kid? I just went through months of research (we're really tall) and bought a kb voodoo steel max rack and Roam Vagabond XL. I was trying to spend less than the budget you posted. I needed a very large RTT, and I wanted low profile, so the closed RTT stays at/ below cab height.

If I was buying for only 2 people, I'd have sprung for a James Barraud hard shell. A less expensive hard shell is the iKamper hard top-- cool, and much less expensive (can't leave bedding inside when you close it... but I'm finding it hard to close the one I got with bedding inside, so....) If I hadn't been so set on affixing cool off-road equipment to the side of the bed rack, I'd have gone with 3 Relentless bars, they look awesome (and would better mirror the round bar look of my sdhq sliders). Also, less money than the rack I bought.

I'm a big fan of bedside support... but left it for later. I'll eventually add SDHQ hidden bed support because I like that they don't interfere with the bed space/ access. I have swing cases just inside the tailgate, so installing support there is inconvenient.

Also, when you're camping with an RTT, mounting lighting to the back/ bottom of a bed rack or bars, aimed down to your open tailgate is great "kitchen". Not sure people using bedslides do this though, because of need for continued access to the drawers. You planning drawers, or just slides with storage tubs on top?

Sorry, this is kinda disorganized: let me know if you have special size requirements or anything. My phone is still filled with bookmarks for cool RTT options.

I am 5’10. No it wouldn’t be a situation where I would need to fit more than the family (unless something out there went wrong!)

I don’t need the off-road stuff initially but as the kiddo grows it may be nice to have.

I like the idea about the kitchen. If I’m not going out all the time bed slides may not be required. How hard is it to get under your rack to access gear.

The one HUGE thing that has me wondering now is can you get mountain bikes under it on the tailgate? Like a Dakine tailgate pad?

If you get the leitner designs rack, the cross members are adjustable and you'll be able to load them easily into the bed still. You can also add equipment to it such as storage boxes, rotopax, maxtrax, among other things.

As far as suspension, your going to want a custom leaf pack, or at the very least the icon 3 leaf add a leaf pack then what ever suspension you'd really want (with suspension, you get what you pay far to a certain point.)

Sounds like the RTT, you cant really go wrong with the 4 person you're chooing.

The bed stiffeners are a great bit of added support and security.

All this installation would only take about 2 days at most. And I'd imagine parts and shipping would cost easily $6,000.

If you're tallest in your family at 5'10 you can get away with a standard sized tent, which are typically 6' for sleeping length. Some soft shell RTT's are < $1100 and probably in CO there are enough local suppliers you could pick one up and save shipping costs (which can be $400+, more if you need a lift gate for residential delivery). Those relentless bars I mentioned are right here:

    https://www.tundras.com/threads/rel...a-bed-bars-perfect-for-rtt-hi-lift-etc.34094/

The famous @Marty McFly has a couple bars. If I'd gone this route, I'd have gotten 3 for my 200# XL tent.

The KB Voodoo Steel Max rack I got is about 10" above the height of the bed sides of my 3rd gen. Low enough to keep the closed RTT from extending up above the cab, creating drag and lowering mpg. Assembly was a major hassle, but once installed, it looks good, feels sturdy, and it was surprisingly easy to get underneath to pull out equipment. Even for a tall person. So much that I can't see a need for a bed slide in the 3rd gen.

However, I did recently buy a 1st gen and plan to upgrade everything that needs doing to run it off-road, then move my rack and RTT over onto it. THAT truck has shorter bedsides so, after really looking at it, I don't think I'll be able to easily access stuff stored in the bed under a rack, and may have to think about a bed slide.

As for your bikes: good you're thinking ahead about how you'll use your truck. I could get bicycles under my bed rack, lying them down in the bed... but it'd be a major hassle if there was also camping equipment. There'd be no problem packing everything up in the bed, then mounting a trailer hitch bike rack outside the tailgate... except most of those big enough to carry 3 bikes won't unfold to allow you to open the tailgate without unloading the bikes first (some do though; check before you decide). KB Voodoo offers bike attachments that affix to the outside of their Max racks, hold a bicycle upright along the edge of the rack, above the bed. Super cool. But that would be too much weight in combination with my RTT and recover equipment.

The Leitner racks suggested above look cool and accommodate a lot of configurations for various gear options. But if you mounted an RTT, it'd be well above the cab of your truck, which seems a bad idea to me, both because of the higher center of gravity and major drag of the RTT at freeway speeds. @sdde4n and @Grendel both have this rack, and may be willing to answer questions. Neither keeps an RTT mounted though. @Grendel has done a lot of research and, last I talked with him, had dialed in his plans to upgrade his rear leaf springs, so he may be able to help you there too, once you get a clearer picture about what you want to do now, vs what you may do eventually.

The problem with every rack I've found so far, is carrying everything you want to carry on it, without exceeding the static and dynamic weight limits.

Good news: I don't see you getting anywhere near the budget you've set for yourself unless you buy a fancy hard-top RTT (which I'd do if I had your budget).

    Rack: $850 + RTT: $1900 + leaf springs: $600 + bed stiffeners: $450 + ??? = a lot more budget for camping or off-road recovery gear.

I'm still not seeing the need for any suspension changes based on what you're wanted to do. Maybe a more durable tire than oem if you haven't already and some basic recover gear. The OEM suspension will be fine.

Upgrade later if you feel the need but you will also learn what works and what doesn't after a few times out with the RTT then you'll find more things to buy. This isn't usually a one time purchase and setup.guys are constantly changing their camping setups based on what they learn.

The Antura Sky 4 is about 2500 new (including tax) thays going to be the biggest expense no doubt.

When adding a RTT the weak point is always going to be the besides. Adding the bed stiffeners is a big help to that.

The Rack can certainly be more of preference thing.
Do you want to sit low, do you want adjustability, how often do you use your bed and what for, ect..

I offroad on some very off camber stuff and I'm willing to use the leitner designs rack because I have been able to see other full size trucks with bedracks and RTTs do WAY more then I'd ever do with out a RTT so even though I agree the added weight will change the center of gravity I believe to much stock is out into it. As far as the fuel consumption I agree you will have more drag there with a taller rack. Just depends on what your willing to sacrifice one way or the other.

Personally I would be adding either wheel spacers or different wheels to gain a wider stance as well to help with some of that stability and higher center of Gravity.

The suspension here is also preference. He could do the single add a leaf and be ok for a while, but it would have to be re done later. The truck will squat with just just the mountain bike and rack. But add food, fuel, RTT, water for 3-4 people for a 2-3 day trip and the camping and recovery gear. You're looking at an additional 700to800 lbs or so.

I'm just speaking from my own experience. I had nearly payload capacity on stock suspension for my 6000 mile trip including 100+ miles on dirt roads in Utah without problems.

Im just suggesting that the OP puts together his camping setup first, see where the truck is sitting and go out a few times to see what else is needed. For a daily driver that occasionally goes on camping trips, suspension changes are not always necessary.

For sure. I'm on the same train of thought. Being loaded up to payload fairly constantly (tools, camping and fire wood is always in there) I see the sag in my rear end. Then adding a leaf will help with a bit of ride comfort under load. My .02 cents

I do like that approach. If I don’t have to buy it initially and it works why spend it.
