It's got a... spacer lift , so first priority will be the best suspension I can figure out. I'm all ready to do 3.0 coil overs with resis (buy once, cry once), but I don't think they'll fit.... :notsure:

    Gotta start all over learning....

2.5’s are the biggest for 1st gens. ICON, ADS(resi’s), FOX(resi’s) but @Darkness doesnt recommend b/c of tie rod contact, KING(no rear shock option) or BOSS.

See, just like that, you've pointed me in the right direction! :fistbump:

Looks like the same makers as for 3rd gens, just not the 3.0 option. So... no resis for Icon? I saw Jimmy put 2.5 ADS on his. So if I can't do Icon, ADS is probably my most likely.

This is where I hope to hear @joonbug tell me his current thoughts on Icon vs. ADS. And @831Tun, yours. Actually, one of the reasons I posted here first is hoping all you BASTRDs will weigh in. :fingerscrossed:

I just contacted ICON about adding a resi to their et 2.5 and they weren’t very responsive on the subject. For my plans(overland not so much desert speed) ICON is my route. 2.5’s all around with CDCV in the rear with Archive Garage Deaver leaf pack.

ADS’s are still on my radar but I ran ICON on my 4runner and loved them.

I followed all but the CDCV. What's that?

And to check my understanding. You like Icon for overlanding, and don't worry much about resis because you don't go fast (and resis are for keeping shock cool when overlanding fast...?)

Thanks Chris! After 11 different 4Xs I've accumulated a bit of knowledge! I'll help any way I can. Really dig Jimmy's ADS setup.

I finally found an affordable 4x4 Tundra to build. First up will be suspension, because it has a spacer lift. Can't just remove it because it's also got big (cheap, but they'll do for a few miles) tires. Then I'll be looking for least expensive best protection (sliders, skids).

    I'll appreciate your guidance. :)

I can tell you right now that there ain't nearly the same amount of stuff available for 1st Gens as there is for the 2nd gen. Skid Row makes the best skidplates and there's a few sliders out there. I'll probably go with the Stubbs Welding sliders.

CDCV is ICONs fancy way of saying clickers. Compression damping control valve.
Correct on the resi’s. I’m not hammering through whoops in the desert but more dirt roads in the mountains. My coilovers shouldn’t get worked enough to need resi’s. If I notice overheating in the future, I will find a way to add resi’s or go a different path.

Couldn’t agree more! No love for the 1st gen’s. Stubbs doesn’t even offer the Ultimate SKO(kick out) for the DC, only regular and AC.

And skid row is the only skid options I’ve seen. Don’t even offer a gas tank skid, unless I’ve missed it.

Jimmy agreed to meet with me soon so I can ask a million questions about his truck and this one, while we're lookin' at 'em side to side (both '02's). I'm hoping to avoid big mistakes by learning from you guys.

I always picture you in BB, Paul. How far north are you (I'm in SD), when you're "down the Hill"?
Oh, cool, thanks for the explanation. Can you tell me, why are you planning clickers only in the rear? (Laden, unladen?)

I was about to ask you about your Tundra. Year, V-8, V-6? How many miles?
I hope to make BB my permanent residence soon but for(ever) now I'm in Whittier on the LA/OC county line.

Okay, that's a ways north for a weekday meet. Probably I'll try to get to Big Bear some weekend you're up there..., assuming you'll put up with my list of rookie questions. :anonymous:

Good plan for you to move up there. :)

It's an '02 V8 4x4 access cab. 209400 miles. It's in good shape, except for a goofy spacer lift and big cheap ass made in China tires from Walmart.

That’s my truck, funny because I got on here to see if I could find the nice cement Tundra my kids were drooling over when it came through the drive through. Eventually the chrome will probably go but it needs a small lift first. Originally I got on this forum to help narrow down my choices and so far I’ve just found more options.

Exactly. Plus ICON’s don’t offer clickers for the front. I’ll have a KB rack and my tepui plus all the other gear. The CDCV is only $300 more than the regular 2.5 piggyback so why not spend the extra for some adjustability.

Can you tell me, did you look into ADS? Did you choose Icon primarily because of good prior experience, or was there something else I could consider, based on what you know?

Found out from a friend of mine, a guy bought a 2019 4runner TRD PRO Voodoo Blue, for 60K. He liked the looks and so paid the price. Might not even go offroad. There are people out there who will pay whatever the dealer asks.

Yes, Xcab is access. I would recommend either Delux or Ultimate. Going to talk with Richard and see if he can do the ultimates for my DC. Gotta have the kick out.

Cool, I like those best. That Rubicon having 2 kick outs actually makes me wonder if I could catch the front kick out on something, moving forward through a rock garden....

I have and they’re still an option for me. I’m going to hopefully bite the bullet this winter, maybe Black Friday deals. ADS is new to me and my experience with ICON has been great. Jimmy likes his ADS and @Rheywood456 likes his ICONs.

I agree, the design is a little too much. The ultimate and deluxe are plenty for these trucks.

Kings don’t have a resi option for the 1st gens and don’t have a matching rear shock or any shock option for that matter. If they made a rear, I would highly consider Kings, resi’s or not.

    :rofl::rofl: Great story! Welcome.
@Sunnier, you should give Matt at ADS a call. Tell him the BASTRDS put you up to it:D. He's got a first gen and a second. He even has a cantilever rear setup for first gens. He's the ADS guy 'cause he did all the R&D for ADS where Tundras are concerned.
Icon has left a bad taste in my mouth. Their UCAs (tubular) flat out did not work on my truck and I'm not happy with their expansion pack (leafs) either.

Because I need more info from you and @ColoradoTJ about why I should go Kings. I feel I've 'listened in' on so many conversations about Icon, and ADS (and MCM) that I'd go that route, but there's not a lot of discussion on here about Kings.

I wouldn't say I want to "go fast" but, after wheeling with @Spvrtan, I know I want to go fastER than was comfortable with stock TRD. And after reading about truck parts @01erionracing broke or left behind keeping up with @osidepunker, I think I should plan for fast, (so... is that Icon > King?) because "that's what the other guys (I want to wheel with) are doing". If I lived in NotCal and could climb boulders with you BADTRDs, I'd be thrilled-- that's definitely my preference. But that's not what I have to play on locally. Well. At least, there's a lot of desert between boulders here.

So... please will you tell me why I should get Kings. :)

Will do. I'm thinking ahead on leafs, probably will check into Alcan. @Grendel'S a smart guy, local to me, and goes out of his way to find local vendors. I've piggy-backed on his research a few times with good result. Anyway, I'm not set on Icon leafs..., and love gathering alternatives.
