Secondary air injection pump and valves

Check engine light is on and codes are reading that the valve are stuck closed. Ive read it's a typical problem with first gens. Should I pay the 200 for the bypass kit and install myself or go thru a mechanic and spend 100s to 1000s between parts and labor to repair faulty parts.

Hello to you, and thank you for sharing his personal experience. I bought the truck earlier this year and I stare at that engine light every day, I can't seem to get off the fence. I know I technically could fix it either way myself, but replacing all the parts properly just doesn't seem to have a big enough reward.

 

Installed last Sunday, and so far so good. I'll be posting my install soon. Maybe tomorrow if I can figure out how to upload multiple pics at once

 

Take good pics of the location of the exhaust plates for me. I seem to be having a really hard time seeing clearly in any videos. The rest of the set up seemed self explanatory. I've found several cheaper versions, should I just splurge on the 300$ one everyone seems to use.

 

This is the fix I used. Save some money by doing it yourself.

 

The plates was easy. I did the drivers side from above, and the passenger side from the wheel well. Since you have the same codes I did, you'll need the bypass module and proxy pack. That's $313 shipped priority vs $400+ to fix it all correctly. I'll see if I can get my pics uploaded today. One thing about the plates, don't take the nuts off. Loosen then enough to slip the plate in, then finger tight to hold it. The gasket stays between the plate and the head.

I read somewhere that after installing the bypass kit, the truck needs to be idled at least 10 seconds for it to work correctly. I went through replacing the parts with the aftermarket parts, and it was a real headache. So maybe the bypass kit is the way to go.

 

Any time the batter is disconnected, the truck will have to go thru a 2 start initialization. !st start the truck will stall, second start the truck will start recognizing all the sensors.

 

Has anyone gone through emissions after installing the bypass kit?

 

I passed smog in CA with the kit.

Thanks for the advice. Easier than I thought it was gonna be. After the reset it, it fixed the PO442 code like I had hoped. But the check engine light came back on giving me 2 codes for emissions systems leak and purge flow. Tried 2 different new gas caps..no change. I had a new/used fuel tank installed by someone else 1 month ago so it might be the fuel lines, or purge valve or an avalanche that just never stops. At least I get to spend quality time with the truck every Sunday.

 

@JessiJane06Tundra I know we are a little late to this party but hope you decided give us a call and install the Bypass Kit. Would love to hear how it went. I also wanted to provide some additional thread resources for anyone one looking for more information about this inevitable issue.

I dealt with this a year ago and had the same symptoms. So I wrote this big hog to give people on instructions for replacement. and there is also a good resource linked for bypassing. If you lose it it's pinned at the top of the 1st gen page =)

Yup, that's the only danger/downside to @HewittTech01 poring over for threads to resurrect.
