BackFlip Bed Cover / Spray-in BedLiner
Hello! This is my first truck and I am already wondering if I did the right thing. Don't get me wrong, I have owned 3 4Runners prior and this Tundra is by far the best vehicle I have ever owned. It is a 2015 Platinum with these upgrades: tinted windows, BackFlip Bed Cover, and Line-X spray-in bed liner. I am saving for a TRD (or similar) exhaust. I would like bigger tires too...but want to keep the same rims.

Anyway, my problem is this. My wife and I want to buy a camping trailer (not 5th wheel). We planned to load the Honda Rancher ATV we have into the bed of the Tundra and pull the camper. I tried loading it into the Tundra and it fits fine ..... with the tailgate down. Unfortunately, threads I have read here advise against pulling with the tailgate down. So, I am left wondering what options I have? Is a hitch extender available that will allow me to pull with the gate down? Maybe a half size tailgate? I need about 6-8 inches for the ATV tires to sit.

Looking forward to seeing what solutions are out there and thanks in advance for your suggestions!

    Welcome from Colorado Springs.

    Questions:

    - what size camper?
    - how heavy is your Rancher 4wheeler?

Here are your problems how I see it.

    1) Like me, I just had to have the CM and in turn we gave up bed space & load capacity.

    2) The 4wheeler most likely will get you close to your gross vehicle weight rating if it is like most 4x4 atv's I've been around. Check inside your drivers door for the load capacity of your truck and start subtracting the quad, the occupants weight, and then see what is left. You are going to be like me, most likely close or over the GVWR.

    - hitch extensions can reduce your tongue weight capacity by up to 50% depending on how long you go. On one of my setups, I had a 4" extension and it reduced my capacity to way under what I wanted to tow. However, I was lucky and just hitched up the trailer under my slide in camper. It was a PITA, but it made it doable. I was still overweight on my load rating. This was on a 3/4 ton diesel. SU1BRzAwNzQuanBn_c7f88abee0761752e969301975c4b016a8db8384.jpg

My airbags were at 80 psi, on the overloads and was almost to my GCWR. I needed a 1 ton badly. Back then I never thought much about it...obviously

    SU1BRzAwNzIuanBn_5cfd4b74f99a284449f82aa5b9929f29d2eb38bc.jpg

    Some solutions:
    - Purchase a specific trailer that you can load the quad onto, has living quarters and is within your tongue weight. There are some rather nice pop up toy haulers that might serve you well.

    - I have a toy hauler that allows for one quad up front. However, you might be in the same boat as me with weight ratings and control. I should have known better when the guy I purchased it from used an F250 diesel to deliver it. This is a Keystone Outback 280RS. There is a 23' version that is quite a bit lighter and may just fit your needs. This one is 28', and in my opinion on the heavy side for our trucks.

    - buy a nice Wall Tent and cots.

    - buy a nice overland trailer and do the hitch extension thing. Make sure you are well within the tongue rating. Many of truck frames have been damaged due to this. Google hitch extension frame damage images. That is a good time.

    - buy a different truck.

Dang! So much to think about. Thanks!

We are looking for a trailer that doesn't exceed 6,000 lbs loaded. I will review the tongue weight limitations and see if an extension is still an option...?

The real issue is with load capacity. Add the weight of the atv to the hitch weight of your trailer + the weight of all occupants +++, and my bet is you are over. As for towing with the tailgate down, I don't see how that would cause a problem as long as it doesn't touch the trailer on tight turns.

How about a raised deck for the ATV and side-load it. Then you could get the ATV on/off without unhooking a trailer, and still have room for misc gear under the ATV.

    Like so

I like the side load too. That's neat.
Solves the tailgate issue at least...figure out the weight of everything and go from there.

If you like the side load idea, I may know someone down in the El Paso area selling one for a CM.

Never considered a side load option. Looks ideal. Let me know if you have a line on one. I like the Diamondback...haven't seen other options.

Why not just remove your tailgate? Takes 30 seconds.
I haul a Yamaha Grizzly 700 in the back with a Kodiak TT that is around 7000 lbs. loaded. Using an Equalizer 10K hitch. Firestone airbags.
This is of coarse with the longer DC bed. The quad is about an inch an a half too long so I run the quad up onto a couple of blocks in the front and then the tailgate closes.
Don't have a pic with both loaded. Headed out tomorrow for a few days with the quad and trailer, will get some pics then.

With all weights aside, what about taking off the tailgate for your trip? Will the ATV still sit in your bed without the tailgate?

    "He has a CM."

Why does that matter? He only needs a few inches to get the tailgate to close. Why do you need the tailgate to close, just take it off while towing the TT.

He had stated that the rear tires sit on the bottom of the tailgate of his truck. The CM bed is a foot shorter than the DC bed.

He does need 6-8" of tailgate, but you did spark up my thought process and ingenuity.

OP, why not remove the tailgate, take off the mounting brackets, buy some 2x8 wood, cut to the width of the tailgate. Walla, you can remove the tailgate and still load the quad. Rear tires will rest on the 2x8" wood.

I would personally reinforce the bottom of the wood board. custom fit where the tires rest another piece of wood that rests on the bumper so the tailgate hinge is not load bearing.

This is the tailgate bracket that I am talking about:

If you want to tow that much weight with the tailgate down then you'll need something this severe. http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/222093025743?lpid=82&chn=ps&ul_noapp=true

UPDATE: With your current truck set-up, 2016 CM Max you have a max payload of 1620 lbs. A 2016 Honda Rancher weighs at 573 lbs. With 10% tongue weight, from trailer equates to 600lbs + weight of HR 573lbs, your total payload now is 1173lbs. This leaves you 447lbs for you, family and stuff.
