My 2016 TRD Limited did not come with a remote starter and I need it. I've got my first oil change coming up soon. Before I lock in for the factory remote / dealer installed is there anything I need to know?

FWIIW We have the factory remote on my wife's 4Runner and I'm not a fan that the car shuts off when you enter the vehicle. Hope they sorted that out.

I agree with Sean266. I have a Viper and am totally satisfied. I doesn't shut off when you open the door. And you can get the full alarm with the remote start. When I bought my truck it had a remote start, but no alarm. I had that ripped out and put the full alarm and remote start in....

Sounds like a strong buy. What Model viper and is this going to cause Toyota warranty nannies to get their panties knotted up?

I had a viper 5806v in my Tacoma, the range on it is listed as 1 mile. The standards for testing these ranges is they put the starter in a field and move 1 mile away line of sight and if it works once then it's a mile range. With that being said it still had great range. I was able to start the truck from my hunting blind at least 300 yards away from the road.

Had remote start installed when I purchased my 15 last August. The salesperson advised me NOT to do the Toyota "factory" one. She had one in her Camry and said it was awful. I had an aftermarket one installed at the dealership.

So the Toyota 'factory' remote start still shuts the vehicle down when a door is opened? Even after all this time and horrible reviews? How inconceivably stupid...

I have the dealer installed viper and I dont like it. Ya its got range but sometimes it locks and sometimes it doesnt, sometimes I have to hit the button 4 times to get it to unlocl the other doors. The remote will say the truck is locked but if I unlock the door from the door it will still show locked. Not worth $800

I've got the factory remote. Used it just about every morning this past winter. Hit the lock button 4 times and it starts every time. Yea it shuts off the engine when you open the door which is dumb. But they put an ignition key in there so all you have to do is turn the key! Takes about 1/2 second. God the inconvenience!

Not just about inconvenience to me, it's also the fact of the unnecessary wear and tear of the extra start cycle. Winter is hard enough on vehicles up here in the frozen North, without making it worse.

I still need to add a remote start and would love a factory option that works with the factory key-fob... But, two starts, every time I use the vehicle, is a no-go for me. Other's mileage may vary. :)

Like I said the dealer had a POS Remote start in my Tundra, and it was the cheapest they could find, and it wasn't an alarm. I would use a professional installer, do the work and provide you a warranty. In Colorado I used Quality Auto Sound and trust their work. I had them install the 5806V and made sure they programmed it to open all the doors when I press unlock. It stays running when I hit unlock and open my door. Then I put my key in and turn it to accessory and go on my way.... totally happy with the setup.

I just bought a 16 Limited & have been thinking about having a remote start installed because I hate getting into frozen almost rock hard leather seats when it's almost zero outside & which is also the temperature inside my unheated detached garage. What I can't figure out is the purpose of a remote with the automatic shutoff feature? Is this some sort of anti-theft deterrent?

I was told that it is a safety / anti-theft deterrent feature, although my previous truck (Silverado) would not shut off when unlocking the truck. I just had to insert the key and turn it to "on" to drive it. I do think turning it off is a little odd. But my factory remote start works fine other than that.

How or what in the world can someone take a running vehicle if the gear shift and steering wheel are locked?
    I'm at a loss.

Yup. Exactly. Any remote starts I've been around shutdown if the key/ignition aren't properly positioned before the brakes are depressed to put the vehicle into gear. Even my work truck, a Dodge 2500 CTD w/ 6 speed standard, continues running after the door is opened and only shuts down if the clutch/brakes are touched before the ignition is properly set up.

Toyota's system must be corporate lawyer approved? ;)

I had the viper installed last fall. Think it is the 5806V mentioned above. Zero issues and I like that it doesn't shut off with the doors. If you have line of sight it will start from a ridiculously long distance. With parts and install I came out under $450

Purchased my 2016 TRD pro in November of 2015. Came equipped with a remote start that does not turn off when you open the door. In contrast, my 2012 4Runner which I traded in was also equipped with factory remote start and did in fact turn off when you opened the doors.

Just checked, it is in fact an Audiovox prestige remote starter but was listed as a port installed option.

Suppose I were to get a viper remote installed by a local shop who specializes in this? Am I asking for warranty trouble in the unlikely case there are electrical issues sometime down the road? I hate this @#$% and I'm not cheap however the dealer only installs their brand of aftermarket or the Toyota version for twice the price.

Toyota installed Python/viper remote start for me under warranty guessing it varies from dealer to dealer, zero issues and definitely has long range

JK did you ask for the Viper specifically? I'd pay the dealer for that no sweat.

These guys are the best when it comes to remote starting, especially when below zero for those of you that have a "real" winter. Call them and ask what they use. Even a piece of crap car in AK needs a remote start. Your vehicle not only needs to start, warm up, but also to prevent Anchorage "ICE" junkies from breaking in. You won't be disappointed: http://www.akremotestart.com/
