Looking to add some security cameras to my property, preferably wireless. 3-4 cameras most likely, 3 outdoors and one inside my garage. Car theft/break ins are getting out of control in my area.

What are you guys using? I have a couple friends that use the blink system that’s sold on Amazon. Just looking for feedback/suggestions.

I purchased the outdoor nest cameras and nest doorbell. I’m extremely happy with them! They save the recordings for 5,10 or 30 days pending your account settings. They can send you text alerts for a person or movement pending your alert settings. You can hear the audio and video at each location. They also allow you to talk to the other end of each camera. So I can talk to anyone at my front door or even talk to my dog in the back yard. You can adjust if you want the led on the camera to blink when someone is in the view of the camera or stay off pending your settings. I’ve really enjoyed having them and knowing when packages arrive and who is at my house. They’ve been a great addition to our home security. The initial setup of the cameras is very easy and quick. You can name each camera per the zone and add interior cameras as well. This is great if you have kids at home with a babysitter. Then you can see and hear what’s happening in your home. The nest door bell sends me a love video and audio immediately to my phone when someone is at my home. Same thing when anyone is around my home.

@my house we use Nest indoor cameras. They setup easy and you can move them anywhere. We will most likely be adding 2-3 outdoor IQ cameras just to give us a holistic view of our property when we are traveling. Been fairly happy with nest and their cloud based recording.

If you are serious about the cameras/security, don't go wireless. The wired ones are a PITA to install but well worth it. 30+ days of CONSTANT recording (not just when it sees movement), and not relying on cloud storage.....go wired.

If going wired go with POE ( power over Ethernet) Costco has some decent Lorex brand boxed system that are 8MP-4K quality for a decent price. Like @Danimal86 said it’s a PITA to run the wire but u won’t have a monthly cloud storage bill, no need to recharge batteries, have an actual HDR at your own house, cheaper then going wireless. Don’t get me wrong I do have a Ring door bell which I love but for my cameras i went wired.

I’m not completely opposed to a wired setup, I wanted wireless for the simplicity. My garage is detached so would require conduit to properly get wired cameras out there.

I agree with the others. Wired is the way to go. I have a Lorex system (Costco) and have a security system since 2008. The only thing you need to know is that the DVR HD is replaceable and its plug and play you basically open the DVR up and put in the newer larger capacity SATA drive (two connections: power and sata cable). I replaced mine with a 4TB Security HD that is made more for continuous rewriting and I run 6 cameras in HD and I get about a little of one month to date of continuous recording. That's pretty insane considering its 24/7 recording. In any case, you need to know that the DVR is on 24/7 and just like a computer, this takes a toll on the DVR. I have never had a DVR last more than 3 years before either the internal Heat Sink Fan takes a dump or something else. Luckily, these parts are replaceable. Just FYI, when you have a security system you become a little more paranoid when you get an alert. Before I didnt give a crap because I didnt know but now when i get an alert of someone on the property and I'm not home, my mind starts to wander and conjure up some stupid crazy story. That's what my wife says anyways. LOL.

Yes my WiFi is very fast even outside. Each camera just need to be plugged into an outlet. There isn’t anything else to wire up beside the plug from each camera.

If you’re looking for relatively inexpensive, I’ve been very happy with my Wyze camera. It apparently has co2, smoke and other features.

Arlo. easy to install and you can change the location if it doesn't work. But yeah not as good as wired solutions with 4K HDR / NV etc..

I believe you can get cameras that have wired power but transmit the video via wifi to your DVR.

keep in mind that most of the breakins will take place in the dark. so night vision tends to be crappy for identification purposes or grabbing a tag... i have some amcrest cameras that do ok but not worth writing home about at night. however i keep recommending the guardline driveway motion sensors and installing them around your perimeter. having that early warning is great! them tricked out playas will never know what hit them unless its the pd that gets there first if u dont wana get physical n break some ankles n knees or popping them 50 times with frozen paint balls in the face... very easy to spot them at any ER.

In the process of building my own system with amcrest PoE cameras and a huge storage bank. 2 months of storage. About 1/4 the price of what it is to buy a premade system that is similar.

I’m running the gaurdline driveway motion as well. It’s all fine and dandy until a deer walks by at 4 am LOL. I tried to place it out of the path the deer travel, but it’s almost impossible because they’ll walk up and down our driveway.

On cameras - When our house was built a few years back I ran Cat 6 to every room, the garage, and about 10 points on the exterior of our house.
A hardwired GW DVR with 5MP cams (x8) handles exterior and then I have some Nest cams inside as well.
I’m not a computer guy so the DVR can be a pain in the ass for me figuring out camera IP addresses and shit.
Nest is Fing easy, just costs $100 year per camera to record. Which I love the ease-of-use on the Nest app.
I can easily scroll through the entire day and find movement. I do get alerts, but sometimes I’m in a meeting etc. and don’t check them.

One thing to think about wifi based systems, if your internet goes down, so does your security. Wired is the way to go, continuous recording and automatic record over to your own secure DVR.

You can use your old cellphone to add to your wireless security systems Then add the app to both cells.

I think I had my electrician drop a line in with my power. It’s a 750ft run to my gate, they said it wouldn’t work well - haven’t put a camera up there yet though because I don’t have a powered gate yet.

i've got a revo that i bought a decade ago or so. was relatively cheap (800, iirc, back then). came with 8 cameras and i have room to add 8 more. been very pleased with it. nighttime inside is great. outside, not so much...very dark. i have some inside and some out.

i did have to run wiring to the garage, but it was springtime to digging was relatively simple with the earth being so wet. went down about 18". camera points right at both the main door and the walk thru

I use samsung wired cameras. Came with 8 cameras and a 16 channel dvr. The cameras a super clean, and they communicate to my phone so if someone walks up to my house on any side it sends me a notification and records that as an event to make it easy to go back and see what was going on.
