Bose VS definitive technology home speaker system

I have hear lately that Bose isn’t what it once was and now really over priced. I’m looking for speaker system for my living room. I have a receiver already that I want use. Best Buy has definitive technologies pro cinema 600 for a decent price and good reviews. Or what else do u guys recommend. I don’t wanna break the bank that’s for sure.

 

For two towers or 5.1 system and your price range? Lots of choices out there. I just bought two Polk LSiM 705 towers and I am very happy with them. Retail3K , on sale for $800 shipped. Good luck. D

 

Kind of want. 5.1 system so I can possibly mount them up high since I have a 2 and 3 year old that like to touch everything. Want to stay on the lowest possible but defiantly

IMO, bose still makes the best noise cancelling headphones and bluetooth speakers. For home theater, overpriced.

 

I got the def techs 600's in my living room and they are just ok. I upgraded to the 1000 series for two of my fr/fl speakers way better sound. Im running a Yamaha rx-a750 7.2 receiver

 

So defiantly not worth the 799 original price tag but what about the sale 499 tag? Best Buy doesn’t have much and I have no idea where else to look lol

 

I've always been a fan of polk for the $.

 

Sold both for many years. For under $1k with Bose your better off humming to yourself and spinning in circles. Sorry to offend but Bose is all label. If you want something up and out, super simple I highly recommend looking at Sonos. Pretty cool gear, simple and up out of the way. Just my opinion no offense to people whose own Bosè

Best Buy has them. But you can buy them online too.

 

If you want towers Sonos aren’t the answer. Just depends on what you want. I just sold my Def Tech towers because of space and a 3 year old

 

Don’t want towers I have a 2 and 3( almost 3 and 4 ) so I want something I can hang up high hopefully

To be honest your question is really broad and the answer is complicated. We need to consider room size, acoustics, budget, type of aesthetics you would like (i.e. in wall, book shelf, or towers). Also, what kind of sound do you prefer? Do you want clean and crisp, boomy, or geared for movies?

As an audiophile, I prefer higher end equipment, but that doesn't mean it has to be expensive. I really love the Martin Logan Electro-Motion series, which are electrotrostats. However, those can be very pricey and large. I also like their Motion series. Their ribbon tweeters are very crisp, and when paired with a great sub, has an amazing range. I personally have the Martin Logan Motion 4s, which are $500 a pair and sound great.

Now for your specific question, Bose is all name and hype and not quality. Definitive speakers are pretty good, but I would definitely listen to them side by side with the other speakers in the range and pick what you like. I love scotch (martin Logan in this case) but you might be a bourbon guy (Definitive or B&W or something else).

Let me see here, well it’s going in my living room medium size not to big not to small(I know that’s pretty vague) looking for I guess 5.1? 5 small speakers and 1 sub? It’s going to don’t watch lots of movies or video games but just want something for the receiver I purchased and forgot to return so now I’m stuck with it. It’s a Yamaha but dont remember model exact but can get the info when I get home. So just basically want music, movies, video games. Want to stay under 1k but unde 509 would be even better lol. Thanks for every1s help. I was looking at sonos stuff but seems pretty pricey also

If you already have the receiver, go listen to speakers at a store and negotiate on price from there. I negotiated with the Magnolia store at Best Buy before, so I know it is possible. Some important points are the front three speakers do the vast majority of work so that is where you want to spend your money. I like the link I provided, however, if I was building the system on that budget I would go with the martin logan motion i series. I would get a pair of the motion 4is, a motion 6 center, then pick a cheaper pair of surrounds that I could get for 100 or less, and an 8inch sub. I would negotiate OTD price to $1k for all of that.

 

I'd suggest starting with 2.1 system, then going to 3.1 & 5.1 as your budget allows. You'll just have to outline the full system before purchasing the first phase.

I would recommend towers over bookshelf or cubes for your front L&R speakers. They put out so much more sound and volume. Small fronts really get lost sometimes. I have a 9 and 5 year old myself and my towers have been here longer than them. Neither child has damaged or knocked over either. YMMV.

If you are handy, you can build your subwoofer yourself. Parts are readily available. I built mine using a jl audio 12" sub and a parts express plate amp.

 

I hear ya, mine are pretty rowdy at times for sure.

 

I actually went from towers down to book shelves. The honest truth is at the high price points it makes a load of different. At the OP's price point, there are a lot of bookshelves that sound better then the towers. I'll also repeat that the OP really needs to sample everything in his price point to see what he really likes. Oh, and my motion 4s are loud, while clean, enough to make my wife upset and yell at me to turn it down. I have a good sub paired so it has a nice full range sound. I have the crossover at 70hz, because the ribbon tweeters and 4in driver cover 70-20khz really well.

 

I'm not a fan of Bose, I think they sound clear, but that's about it. I have a friend who installs home stereo's and he said he really digs the Sonos even though it's his competition. I listened to a friend's home Sonos system and I was really impressed with their setup.

And they’re always referred to as junk. The high price of their home systems used to derive from marketing costs, not sure if that’s still the case.

But I have to say the only Bose product I do own are QC35II’s, best active noise canceling headphones next to Sony WH1000XM3’s. Comfortable all day and not hear a thing outside of them, wife hates them lol.

 

I agree with the never buy Bose sentiment. Also, I love my Sony WH-900Ns

 

Dont want to thread jack, but this seems to be the thread to ask. I am looking to put in outdoor speakers in my yard. Wired/ not wired doesn’t matter. The limited research I’ve done pointed me toward Bose. But I am open for anything. Do you guys have any recommendations for outdoor speakers/ systems.

 

Both of those are nice actually. The only good thing Bose makes is headphones

Buy wired. Wireless out door are still Bluetooth. Bluetooth at home sucks. Your phone rings, text, email etc it stops the music. I didn’t run across any good outdoor WiFi speakers when I was looking (if you find them and have WiFi repeaters check those out) We have a covered patio so we run a Sonos out there too. (We have 4 zones of them)

 

JBL Cotrol 25 x 2 or get four of them for your outdoor patio. Weatherproof to a point and lots of bars and restaurants use them because of their great reputation. I have four out in my patio. Overkill I’m sure ,but the price was a steal. Good luck. D

 

I agree with wired systems. They provide greater detail compared to wireless. The brands that come to mind for me are Polk, Klipsch, Martin Logan, and Paradigm. Kilpsch has the best overall outdoor system, but Martin Logan, and their subsidiary Paradigm have systems that sound great and blend into your landscape better then the Klipsch. I really like that ML has an outdoor Sub that you bury , so all you see is a little mushroom like thing sticking up.

 

I owned the def tech 600 PKG for 6 yrs until I moved to a larger space and I upgraded to full size surround sound system (also def tech).

The 600 series for $500 gives you a good 5.1 experience. A decent (compact) sub and true surround sound and they look good. They put a smile on my face when watching movies. The 800 or 1000 series would be better but they're more.

I agree with Hondoman too. You could find a good set of bookshelf speakers and a sub then surround.

This is another case of our favorite site costing us more in upgrades.

I own bose 520 and was lucky to buy it for $800 new before the phased out of the reasonably price systems.and now a similar system cost $3k not worth it at that price
