Blown rear end?

My 2001 tundra has been having a problem for the past couple months where when I put it in reverse there’s a jolt and clunking noise when I put it in reverse. Just last night while driving on the highway doing about 65 mph I took my foot off the gas pedal and there was this horrible sound. Kinda like metal hitting metal. From what I found driving it home was it only does this if I hit the brakes hard or immediately take my foot off the gas. What I’m wondering is if The entire rear end is trashed and if so just as a thought would swapping it with the heavier duty axle used in the second and third gen tundras be worth it?

 

Check your Ujoints and center carrier bearing.

 

take a look. Like 15whtrd said, check out your drive shaft, u-joints and center support bearing. If those are all fine, drain your rear end fluid to look for metal shavings.

 

Exactly. There will be a small amount of metal shavings but if there is chunks and a lot of fine material you may have an issue.

All I’m going to say is don’t google “blown rear end”

 

or, worse still... "I drained the fluid from my rear end...."

 

Maybe it should be “I have shards of metal in my rear end”

That and check that the slip joint is moving freely.

 

I've been there. Sounds like it's on it's way out from my experience.

When mine started acting up it made noises that sounded like empty beer cans bouncing around on hard deceleration or when I lifted off the gas at highway speed. Eventually it locked up on me during street driving a few times, often feeling like the rear brakes locked up but twice it jumped as if I hit an invisible speed bump.

The way I checked was I put my rear axle up on jack stands, kicked and rocked my truck trying to make it fall off and when it didn't I knew I could do a dangerous test. I put it in drive and let it idle with my buddy in the driver seat just in case. Then crawled under the rear bumper and listened. I extended a copper pipe (had some in the bed, hose or screw driver works too) against the rear end and put the other end to my ear, I heard very clear clunkity-clunk as the wheels spun.

I took the opportunity to buy 4.56 Nitro gears and a Kazuma LSD. Had a shop do the install for $400 flat.

 

Try greasing the zerks on prop shaft? Sounds like maybe bad carrier bearing?

How many miles did your guys’ rear ends go out? Serious question.

My next Prevent Maintanence job is going to be all new u-joints on the rear prop and also a new carrier bearing since its all connected.

I see Toyota sells an OEM dust cover for the slip joint for $12. Can’t remember if mine came with it new?2002 Tundra SR5 V8 4wd. I know when I grease the rear zerks it squeezes out the slip joint. Never knew they sold a cover for it.

Also, there are spider joint kits for different models. Each year is slightly different even within each year they are diferent depending on 4wd or the 6 cyl vs 8 cyl models.

Mine was around 130k. On the open diff carrier theres a main pin held in place by a clip. The clip snapped and the pin was sliding out of its hole. When it slid out it was dragging across the ring gear, when it went out far enough it locked, I assume getting between ring and pinion. I looked over the remains, I was surprised I drove on it about 600 miles thtlat way.

Mine was either bad luck or a result of duck walking off road. I had taken an off road detour on my way home from work for a few months before it happened.

 

I googled it, it was actually blown rear diff gears that popped up not anything else

 

Maybe that’s because I google rear ends a lot
