    Hey guys,
    I have a 2001 Tundra SR5 2wd.
I’m looking to get a key fob and program it myself. Has anyone done this?
I don’t no much about electrical so pardon me if I say anything wrong
I’m going to add a 24” light bar in the front lower grill, running board lights, and two back Lights. When I unlock the truck I’d like all those to turn on. What’s all involved in doing this? Thanks!

I just went thru the pain of programming key fobs. The actual programming is easy. But getting the right fob is key. There's two types of keyless systems for our trucks. One factory option and one port aka dealer option. You must buy the correct key fobs for the system you have. To find out which you have go to a dealer and run the VIN. Then buy the fobs online for way cheaper than the dealership. Be sure to buy the right fobs.

Why not have a remote start added?usually lights come on when the truck starts.

I'd also like to do something like this. No back lights and light bar but, with running board lights. I'd like the lights to mimic the function of the dome lights; when remotely unlocked, the lights come on and when locked, they go off. Can anyone give any guidance as to where, under the hood or dash, one can find the wire powering the dome lights?

Anyone able to help with finding where to tap the power? I just found these and they look to be perfect for what I want to do.

Do you have the RV style plug on your truck? The back up light wire is the blue wire coming out of that plug., If memory serves me correctly.

I'm not looking for constant power, I'm looking for power when the dome light is on. When I unlock the truck, I want ground/step lights to come on and when I lock the truck or close the doors to drive it, the lights will go off. I want the ground/step lights to act in the same manor as the automatic function of the dome light.

You’ll have to wire off of the other side of the switchleg AT THE dome light. You’ll have to fish some wires from your new lights to that side of the switch.

Another option is to wire off of your courtesy door lights, so when you open the doors your new lights turn on.

I'd, really, rather not do this. I want the ground/step lights to come on when I unlock the truck from a distance and am walking to it, not only when I open the door.

So what happens if your dome switch is in the off position? On the 02’ there is door/off/on mode.

Foot wells (Casper) and courtesy door side lights up simultaneously. Must be different options on your guys?

Anyhow let us know how you do it. Sounds fun.

I'm not certain but there' got to be two power circuits running to the dome light. There's got to be a constant power and an automatic power. The constant power circuit is closed when the dome switch is in the "on" position and won't ever turn off. The "door" circuit is the automatic circuit that opens and closes with the door opening or the locking/unlocking of the doors. The "off" position opens all circuits. I could be way off but, that's how I'm thinking of the system.

I misunderstood you as wanting everything controlled throught the dome light (overhead in center of cab). Coming off of that switch requires some fishing to do that.

Your footwell and courtesy lights should light up with how your wanting the fob controller to act. This is the easier place to tap for your job, but its not controlled via dome switch (see above).

Seems like I may not have been clear enough with my description. Maybe this will help clear things up: I want my ground/step lights to act in the same manor as my dome light when it's in the "door" position.

Does the courtesy light in a given door ever come on when that door is closed? I feel like they only ever come on when the door is open and not all of them come on, only the courtesy light in the door that's open comes on. I'd have to confirm that, though.

Courtesy lights only come on when door opens or when fob unlock is pressed (then all lights illuminate unless map and dome are in ‘off’ mode.

You have it figured out how you want it to operate its just a matter of a control switch over automatic with other lights.

I’d tap off the courtesy/foot well (your choice) if it was me.

I’ll share an idea I’ve been working over for a few months (whether I’ll do it or not is another matter).

Run some 3M sticky sided led strip lights along the bottom of the doors. When you open door the led shines down onto the ground/road surface. These would tie into the door courtesy wires via through the door plug or a small drilled hole in bottom of door. These sticky LED strips are cheap and have alot of variability in use.

You can use them under seats, along door bottoms, behind the rear seats to illuminate etc.

Since you are a light aficionado, these are some ideas that I’ve use in other applications but not my truck (yet?).

Big box sells just the strips in 25’ rolls. Buy some extra taps to make connections. No need to buy fixtures anymore unless for strong task lights.
