The last thing I want to do is to try fiddle around with a dash mounted shifter when hauling ass up hill in mud with ruts working the steering wheel back and forth to maintain traction and momentum for example. I know there are some of you here that know exactly what I'm talking about. :mudding:

I really don't mind column shifters in general, but I don't know why they made the Tundra's sooooo long. It just looks off.

Having that center hand-rest is a must have feature. Its really cool that you can also use it to change gears.

No way! I drove one and hated it. Too disconnected from the truck. I like it being somewhat mechanical. If something broke, in a pinch i could crawl under and possibly physically put it in gear. For the love of god no dial!

I like my column shifter and have used my middle seat. But I wouldn't hate the floor shifter. My SS trailblazer had the floor shifter and it was fun.

Has anyone attempted swap? I wouldnt mind the extra seat. But I'm wondering how much work would be involved

Completely understand your thought process. My old man has had them on his last two Rams and not a single issue. Every time I drove it I really enjoyed it too. Very easy and opens up a lot of room. In a perfect world, I would love it as an option, then we can pick & choose what we want.

I have the column shifter, although, for the price I got mine for, I couldn't complain. It's all good, but next tundy I get, I'm getting the floor shifter. Center console on the floors carry way more, and so damn hard to find a place to hook up a holster for my pistol on a bench seat. Got mine wedged between the drivers seat and middle seat. Not good for a quick draw.

I'm almost debating mounting a holster on the floor wall, right where the bottom dash meets the floor near the gas pedal. Ease of access, but exposed, almost inviting people to break in and steal it. Ease of access vs concealment :annoyed:

I'm no expert by any means, but I'd think you'd have to get new seats, the console, tie it into the dash, Run the wires to their appropriate places, a/c to rear seat, and probably the most labor intensive part, switching the gear shift mechanism from column up through the floor. I'd just as soon buy a new truck with a floor shifter before shelling out for a swap from what I would imagine the cost/benefit ratio to be.

I had the same issue with my last truck, my sidearm wouldn't fit in the center console. So I kept it under my seat. And holy cow that actually worked out to be a good decision. My truck was broken into right after I parked and went inside my local LA Fitness gym. The 'perp' smashed my window and only searched the center console and glove box. And completely overlooked my Sig sitting under the drivers seat. I got lucky on that one. Come to find out that a high number of men normally leave their wallets in their center console before they go into the gym so thus the center console is the first place they look. Luckily the LA Fitness I go to has mini lockers all over the place for small stuff so I had all my valuables with me (wallet, keys phone). Point of the story, under the seat or under the dash isn't any worse a hiding spot (as long as not obviously visible) than the center console. One thing you may want to look into is a dash holster.

Whew, dodged a bullet there (pun intended). I knew the center console and glove compartments were a high target for car thieves, but wasn't aware of men leaving their wallets in there being the reason. I keep mine in there at all times. May have to rethink that approach.
I did think about that dash holster but the dash material seems so flimsy when I give it a test flex. May just slide it under my seat or keep it safely tucked between the seats.

I was glad to be able to find a first gen Tundra with the bench seat. That said, column shifter for me.....I can seat 3 adults up front with no issues. It's a truck, so it needs to be practical.

I am used to both. But I really wanted a bench seat so 6 people can fit (4 children and wife). I 'settled' for the bucket seats (couldn't find one on time). And now, after 6+ years, I finally broke 17k on odo ....... for obvious reasons.

Is there anyway to shorten it or swap it out for something aftermarket? I hate how long mine is as well, I would have preferred the floor shifter but they didnt have any in stock when I bought mine so oh well. But the column shifter sticks out so far it blocks my view of the radio its ridiculous looking.

My floor shifter is right in the way...its too easy to knock out of gear or go in to sequential shift. Id rather have the column shift but keep the sr5 upgrade package.

Rial cast wheels. Looking for TRD Pro grill with chrome surround
Avoided the SR5 upgrade package because I wanted the column shifter. PROS: 3 seats up front is great especially with the grandkids. When not seating 3 up front I like the flat floor space on the hump for setting stuff like lunch & CD's. CONS:The column shifter is too long & blocks visibility of some of the dash controls like the emergency flasher switch.

Any clue if there is a way to shorten the shifter somehow or swap it out for a shorter aftermarket part?
