What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Yesterday I ended up installing a set of @Coachbuilder1 shims on my ICONs to give me a little more height. I didn’t want to increase my preload anymore than what it is, so I chose this route. Install was simple. 30 or so mins to install one on each side. Looks to have given me an extra .5” (maybe a hair less). I’ll get photo on flat ground today of new height.

 

X8 just arrived. Install tomorrow. Got’em for $55 a pop.

I bought my 06 AC for 9k with 200k miles about 6 weeks ago

 

Just a bit more than the cheapies that break after 10k miles. At least thats what the reviews say. Nice they are Denso made in Japan. Not China.

 

Avoid the cheap ones, I got cheap ones for my wifes Scion and they lasted about a year. They did wake the car up quite a bit though, made me wonder if they would do the same on my truck.

 

What is that ?

Ended up working on the truck today even though I was going to wait till tomorrow. The tire store said the spare tire key was delivered so I took it up to have the spare ‘renewed’ with the ‘newer’ tire. The key was the wrong shape. I ended up circumventing the old lock by using an articulating plumbers wrench. Arm yoga is what I call it. Made it happen and dropped the tire. Took old lock off and installed new. Had shop put the new tire on after it was sanded and spray painted.

Greased up the spare cable and Fluid Filmed all under parts. Put the new spare on with the stem down which has eliminated a sound from the tail end. A bump a slow speed on incline turns.

Since the blood was flowing went ahead and installed Ignition Coils. Feels a bit peppier. Nothing earth shattering.

 

Thinking about selling 4 of these old coils. What do you guys think? Is there a market and how much should I charge if selling? I’d keep the other 4 as safety parts.

I’ll do inventory on them tomorrow as some seemed burnt was was noticed back during the spark plug change a few months back.

Delivery guy with the coils from Amazon drove up in a 2005 Sequoia. Asked him how many miles and he said 400k. Still going strong he said.

 

OE Ignition Coils by Denso. They make them for Toyota ($95), but also sell them under their name for less ($55) as OE not OEM.

There are other look alikes out there for $10 a coil (China). Lots of bad reviews similiar as Darkness says.

 

I saw an 8 pack for like $70 on Amazon. Tempting till you read the reviews. What about the mid priced ones on rock auto? Has anyone tried those?

 

On my wifes old Scion I eventually tried the lifetime ones from Vatozone. They did the job but one died after about 10 months and I took it in to swap no questions asked. I only went with those because the cheapy one died and we needed to get home from San Diego. Scions were known to have coil pack failures, I would go Denso if we still had the car. Same for my Tundra, Denso or nothing.

Man, you guys down south get all year to tinker on your trucks. I'm running out of time with winter coming and no garage to work in. Not fun messing with the truck in sub zero temps and snow on the ground. I have an oil change coming up in a few thousand clicks too...probably right in time for the big dump of snow.

 

Got an important thing for my Tundra. Not sure which one to put where yet.

Im sorry but what exactly are the pros and cons of this? I still dont get it /:

 

Right!? You haven't lived until you've changed your oil when it's -10.

 

Its those reviews that tell the story. Reason why I went Denso. Same maker as Toyota brand at half cost.

 

Pros: Eliminate another burnt Coil. OE Denso quality at half price of stealership. Easy to install.

Cons: Cost of 8 is about $450.


My original number 3 coil went bad at 120k miles. Only time my truck has had to gimp back home and thought the truck was done for. Whole time driving home I’m thinking of having to go buy a new truck headache. The shop was able to fix it and charged me $100 for the coil and almost $100 for labor.

Been keeping my eye open for used originals for spares, but couldn’t find any. Started searching online and saw these Denso ones. Reviews looked good and made in Japan. Many of the reviewers had same Gen Lexus and Sequoia (as well as Tundras) that had a few go out on them over a period of time and they had bought some cheap China ones that didn’t last. They liked these Denso.

Decided to buy these as cheap insurance. Some of my originals had that brown look. They still work. Probs keep 4 and sell the other 4 cheap for someone that needs back ups.

 

That looked fun. Let me drive up this steep hill and go back down it with some lumber supplies in the back.

Did they get oily from before you did the seals?

 

Painted the bed trim to match my bumper, makes the truck look a little nicer. I wanna take care of it so it doesnt look as old as it is


Also ran some led strips from the inside to the outside, should have underglow right under the cab, will get pics of that at night
