Anyone not like the 2018 safety features?

in the next 2-3 months im hoping to buy a Tundra. I know theres deals on the 2018’s but was curious about the safety stuff added to this year model. Does anyone NOT like the safety features and prefer not to have them? Ive driven a few vehicles with the safety crap (lane assist, etc) and didnt like it at all. Just seems like more stuff to go wrong at some point.

I'm in the same boat as you. Having driven rental cars with similar features I knew I could never own a vehicle like that. If I were you I'd look for a good deal on a certified 16 or 17.

I wonder if the air bag recall on the 18s and 19s has anything to do with all the other electronic changes. Plenty of threads on here discussing issues, but there are also plenty that hasn't had issues and do like the extra "features"

However, it looks like all the 18s have the airbag recall.

The newer 19's do also. Just had to take mine in 3 days after purchasing it.

I've used it for close to a year. Zero issues. Its not a reason to not buy one in my opinion.

I don't mind them, really. The only thing that has gotten annoying is the radar system occasionally throwing a false alarm, but that only happens every couple thousand miles or so in my truck so it's not a big deal. There are others who are having much worse behavior from the radar system. As for the lane departure, I have no idea what it sounds like, I've never had it go off. The cross traffic alert when you're backing up isn't that bad, it's beeped at me a couple times when I'm in a parking lot and car is going by. It's not a bad thing. I also like the blind spot monitors on the side view mirrors, but I'm not sure if that's something that was round on the models prior to 2018.

Certainly don't let it dissuade you from buying the truck. I'd get rid of the radar if I could, that's been my only small complaint about this truck. But I'd buy it over again in a second, it's not much of an issue for me.

I have lane departure turned off. I've never tried it but even the salesman said it would drive me nuts.

I actually really like the parking assist alarms all around the truck.

The pre-collision system light goes off sometimes in heavy rain. Hasn't actually been a problem, but I could have certainly lived without it. Doesn't bother me though. And who knows, maybe someday I'll be glad I had it.

ETA: I have yet to have a false reading.

I have had my '18 Platinum for almost a year and I actually like all of the new safety stuff. I may be in the minority but I don't offroad my truck or anything like that so I find it useful, especially in traffic. I think you'll find those who have had issues with it hate it, and those that haven't had issues with it are fine with it. Fortunately I haven't had any issues with mine. I find the new safety stuff to be a nice upgrade (as long as you don't have any issues with it).

I won’t buy a 2018 or 19 because of the tss. I’m not paying 45 grand for a truck that I know has a 50/50 chance of malfunctioning. Toyota needs to fix it or get rid of it asap

I haven't had them adversely affect anything yet (knock on wood), and I don't not like anything about them.

I like the blind spot and parking sensors on my 16. Not too much bells and whistles. And yeah I don’t NeED them but kind of nice. I wouldn’t pay EXTRA for them

Hopefully Toyota figures out this TSS stuff, otherwise they're going to hurt their reputation/sales.

Mine has the radar cruise control thing. Asides the rare false positives I don't mind it so much.
you have to remember that these safety features helps your insurance, my rate on my brand new '18 is lower than the Wife's '14 year old Venza.

It is good technology and actually why I traded my perfectly good 80k mile model for the new one.

I’m getting older and accept at 55, I’m not 25 anymore, don’t see as well, back into bad positions, but use my truck like it supposed to to tow, drive on the beach for fishing the shore, and hauling stuff for maintaining my properties.

Best of both for me...one opinion.

i have a 2018 and rarely get a false alarm. i have a leveling kit with larger tires and I think i have had 2-3 false alarms in the year i have had it. since day one i have had the lane assist off, apparently i cannot stay in my lane. so being able to turn the lane assist off and the few false alarms wouldn't be a reason to not buy the truck. IMO. good luck

I have not had an issue with mine and the Adaptive Cruise is actually a feature I have found nice to have of the Safety system.

I'm another one of them older drivers and I think it's an absolute must have. It's great knowing there is more protection from me hitting someone. I have had no false alarms. The truck did alert me when someone stepped off the curb and helped me avoid hitting someone. The coolest feature is the adaptive cruise. I was pulling my trailer and the wind was terrible. I was getting 8mpg when I decided to draft behind a truck and the cruise kept me the perfect distance away and my mpg went up 10. I set it faster than the truck in front of me but the cruise would never let me get closer than I had it set. It was pretty cool and it kept a lot of people from cutting in front of me. I like the safety stuff and it's worth the extra cost.

I had some issues with the Pre Collision Sensor (PCS) after I first purchased the truck, random warning messages. I took it back in to the dealer and they recalibrated some stuff and haven't had any issues since (knock on wood). That being said I like the TSS package.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control - Love it, this is my favorite feature of the TSS. Mine is a daily driver and I live in a metropolitan type and this is money IMO. Works great!

Pre Collision Sensor - Passive system so one of those things you might be happy you have it when you need it.

Lane Departure - I played around with, nothing great IMO and I leave it off. Might be useful on some long distance freeway driving.

Auto High Beams - Haven't really used it, I live in area where I don't use high beams often but could be useful driving in the country.

Blind Spot Monitoring & Rear Cross traffic alert - While not part of the TSS package these systems are well worth the money! I also have the parking sensors and they are great as well.

I'm pretty sure the TSS is standard in all new Toyotas and you can turn individual features off if you want.

Today a Doosh Bahag ran a stop right in front of me.... I was on the brakes in time....but I could feel the truck taking over and getting me stopped RIGHT NOW RIGHT HERE!!

I liked the features so much in my wifes 2018 Sienna.... I bought a Tundra instaed of a ford!!!

I love the dynamic radar cruise, turned the annoying lane departure alert off, and never use the auto high beams. The rest is fairly unobtrusive. I get the malfunction warning after driving in rain for a while bit it's nothing more than a light and a message.

The only real complaint I have happened about a week ago driving at slow speed and the sensor apparently read something that wasn't there and decided the truck needed to stop NOW. It let go just after giving my girlfriend and I whiplash. I'm kind of paranoid about it now, just a worrisome thought of being rear ended on the freeway because the truck is freaking out about a damn bug getting splattered on the sensor or something. I had it to the dealership and the couldn't reproduce the problem so couldn't do anything. I'm hoping it's a one off thing but wouldn't let it sway me from buying again .

I’m a fan. In fact I went with an 18 instead of a 17 in large part because I had recently rented a vehicle with adaptive cruise and thought it was great.

I have turned off lane assist for my commute, but I would use it if I had a long drive. I have not had any system malfunction in the 6-7 months and about 10k miles I’ve gone.

I did have rain kill the adaptive cruise twice. Oregon is like that...

I wouldn’t make the safety stuff a deal-breaker. You can turn almost all of it off.

    Good luck!

Same. I like them. No issues and it was another reason why the 18+ is a better choice imo

I'm driving a 2018 Platinum. Certainly not a fan of TSS. My truck spends a lot of time testing car washes, which have without doubt contributed to my TSS issues. I've been in twice, and had two radar sensors replaced. I just turned 5,000 miles. It's going to be a long ride at this rate. I so miss my 2013 Tundra, and miss my 2008 Tundra even more. Toyota had better hit it out of the park with the next model/body change. I don't know what else I would buy, but I'm not as much of a Toyota fan as I used to be! In the past, I've stuck with Toyota for the dependability, not the fancy BS electronics. Sorry they are going this way, but they are. If I were buying now, I'd buy used. Steer clear of the TSS crap, in my opinion. Headache for sure.

i have it on my 2018 Camry and love it. then again it's my commuter. the pre-collision system saves my bacon many times here. it works as expected and I'm glad I have it.
Now on my off road truck that I enjoy modifying, I'm glad I don't have it :)

Most of the TSS functions can be turned off or configured to be less annoying. I don't need any of the features and disable them at will.

They don't bother me, I'm just happy to have a state-of-the-art 2018 Tundra. Love it. The LED headlights rock.

I'm 5000 into mine and no issues so far. Like the doc said above, I disabled as much as I could on the way home from the dealer.
