Hey folks, new to The Forum. I am getting a new frame on my 07 Crewmax this week and and the dealer has told me that anything I replace underneath will be free labor. I will just need to pay for the parts. Almost 12 years old 96000 miles and I I'm looking for recommendations for age and mileage on what I should be replacing. Of course the factory alternator died last week so that is new. Dealership recommends cats and water pump. Thank you for any recommendations in advance.

Definitely the water pump. If your cats and exhaust are in bad condition I'd change those out too.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm bringing it to the dealer now and they will call me tomorrow with his recommendations. I will be available to go and verify, a questionable dealership that remembers me from '12 when I went to regional VP on rusted out bed when dealer declined replacing. VP approved it and charged dealer because of the way it was handled. They we're not happy but they also know not to play games with me.

For anybody going through this Frame replacement, the parts that were recommended and I have changed are primarily due to the fact that I live in Northern New York mountains with lots of winter weather so most the recommendations were due to rust and imminent failure of parts. I changed the fuel pump computer that sets on the frame as it was almost disintegrated due to rust. I did have the water pump replaced as that takes up a lot of Labor if I need to have it done in the future and the labor was free. I changed the shocks all around and the coolant pipes were very close to failing steering shaft was incredibly Rusty so I changed that and the power steering rack and lines we're all replaced. Finally the e-brake pivots and cables were partially seized due to rust. Total expenses were 9 hours labor and just shy of $3,000 in parts dealer gives 10% military discount so total was just shy of 4 grand. Dealer stated I saved about 24 hours of Labor doing this when they replace the frame.

Yea sounds about right. Good call on replacing all those. Mainly that Fuel Pump ECU. It's in a terrible spot on the frame rail. Not sure why Toyota put them there.

Nice job saving a few grand in labor!

    Enjoy the new frame!

Everything else was in good shape and since I have kept the vehicle looking like new for 12 years I argued the fact that the recall does not pay for new undercoating even though I paid for it when I bought it new and it failed. So the dealer didn't argue they did a complete undercoat on the new frame for me. I did not replace the cats as both mechanics doing the frame said they looked great and it's not worth the expense. I hope that doesn't come back and bite me

Ehhh...With Cats you never know when they will fail. So it's a fine line to dance on.

That's great that they undercoated it for you! Big bonus on that!!

I would think the cats are easy to replace with oem yourself. It’s the parts that cost the most.

When I had the frame replaced on my 2000 Tundra I had them do the stuff that made sense. I did the timing belt/ water pump myself as it's not too much extra work to do, just pulling the radiator. Things like the cats, wheel bearings aren't going to make a bit of difference to a garage with a lift if there's a cab on the frame or not. One thing I would have replaced, even if it's not bad is the rubber seal for the steering shaft. I don't know how the 2nd gen does it but on my 2000 the rubber breaks down. Once it does it sounds like you have an exhaust leak.

New member here and I see this is recent. I have a 2013 with surface rust but nothing crazy. I have 84k on my dash. Should I look into this?

You can call but I highly doubt anything will come of it. Where is the rust?

These Tacoma's and Tundras are getting new frames because of actual holes through the frame rail.

Don't use POR-15. If you want to do something either use Fluid Film or LPS-3. POR-15 will convert the rust that's there but will not stop any new rust from forming while the two choices I gave you will. I tried doing my 1st gen with POR-15 before the recall started and within a year everything I did looked just the same as before. I removed the bed and used a pressure washer to remove the scale/ paint and any salt. After drying for days I took my time painting it.

A mechanic at my dealer told me the frame recall should also include brand new leaf springs. I somehow broke a leaf spring on my 2011. My mechanic had a free set laying around his house and put them on my truck for me, they were from a frame recall, the guy getting the frame had a lift and already had changed the OEM leafs so he told toyota to keep them. Then they ended up on
    my truck.......

    No idea how/when/why I broke a spring?
