2014 Limited (FFV) and MPG

I've been looking into buying a Tundra for the past few weeks and I've come across a pretty good deal (I think so anyway, please let me know if you think I'm wrong).

It's a 2014 CrewMax Limited 4x4 5.7L FFV. It's got 69k miles on it and they're asking 29K.

I took it for a test drive today and it drove great, but after reading some of the posts regarding a possible issue with the FFV engine and MPG I have a concern.

I flipped through the display settings and say the Average MPG was 12.
Now I know that could be because of the way the previous owner drove it, but I'm nervous about a possible issue with the FFV engine. Is 12 MPG for this one indicative of a problem here or should I not be worried?

 

Is it stock or lifted with bigger tires?

My 17 gets anywhere from 12-16 depending on city/highway and how I am driving. My Gage has never been reset, life of the truck mpg is 13.9 currently.

I haven't heard anything bad about the flex motors and mpg, just requires different t fuel is all. Someone with more knowledge will post soon.

 

They do not "require" different fuel, it only gives you the option of using E85 which most....including me.....will never use. The only real difference is in the fuel system. I have a 17 FFV Crewmax, I consistently get 17-19 mpg but it is all in how and where you drive. If you drive short distances, in town and are heavy on the throttle you'll see 12mpg. I put about 500-800 miles on a week, lots of expressway/highway miles, keep it below 75mph and you'll beat the mpg ratings easily.

 

Doesn't require a different fuel but you can run E85 because the fuel components can handle it. No difference in MPGs with regular fuel. Maintenance interval for oil changes per Toyota is half but no mechanical reason for it.

Good catch, forgot to mention the oil change deal..... I call bullshit on the 5K "requirement" anyway but we can save that argument for one of the thousand other threads on that subject.....LOL

 

Thanks for the responses. The tires are stock. I have no intention of using E85, only regular fuel, so it's not even something I want to mess with. Sounds like 12 could be normal...I don't know if there is any way I'd be able find out other than going on an extended drive with it. Maybe I'll see if I can arrange a 20 mile test drive or so to get a better feel.

 

So I bought a 2015(not 4x4) and the mpg was at 13.8 I reset it and like others have said, if you keep your foot out of it and stay under 75 you will get decent milage. I'm at 15.8 in mine with a decent mix of city and highway driving.

 

I have a non flex fuel, I drive short distances with frequent stops and almost no highway. I get 12-14mpg. I have taken a few road trips where I drove 4-6 hours on the highway and got 16-17 mpg. I don't think flex fuel vs non makes a big difference, these trucks just get crummy mileage.

 

Worried about mpg? Don’t buy it. These trucks are not made to get high mileage. Most average 13-20mpg depending on where they live and how they drive.

 

2017 FFV. 15mpg leveled with big all terrain tires. You will have to post info on “issues with FFV and mpg”. I have never heard of such a thing.

 

I would say 12 is below normal. I commute on IH about 30 miles one way at 65-75 mph. The only reason I don't get in the high 17s is because I have 3-4 bad traffic areas mostly on the way home. If I keep my foot out of the gas and run 65 I can get better than 18.

 

It took me about 3-4 months to quit obsessing about the terrible mpg's. It is a great truck, and a pleasure to drive. I have a FFV, and get about 12 city, 16-17 highway, depending on speed.(small lift, and slightly bigger tires) The reliability is peace of mind, and mpg is cost of admission. I doubt you will regret the decision, and I think the price is fair.

 

Lately, 11.2 MPG with short trips all city LOL.
To be honest every truck I own has gotten around the same figures doing the driving that I do. And they all got the same out on the highway (give or take) as my tundra. Between 14 and 19 depending on how I drive. It’s become the cost that I just figure in to owning trucks that I like to drive and use.

On the other hand, in general I've slowed my driving down....getting older I guess.... I spend a lot of time on the road, over 800 miles this week by the time I get home on Friday. I've figured out that just slowing down a little makes a more relaxing drive, I park in the right lane and set the cruise around 70 and go with the flow..... I could run 80+ in the left lane and still only get home 20-30 mins earlier on a 3 or 4 hr drive

 

I have the same truck. My commute is about 7 miles round-trip/day on surface roads and I average about 11.5/gal. What you're looking at is normal based on two tundras that I've owned.

 

Talked with a Raptor guy the other day. He is getting 12MPG too.

 

I also have the same year/model with ffv, lifted slightly with larger tires. Averaging 13 mostly city driving based on Fuelly calculation. Not gonna lie I push the tow/haul button for some fun every now and then so that will negatively impact your mileage. Highway driving ups the mpg to around 15, don't be afraid to pull the trigger on that truck if it is good condition you won't regret it.

 

Uve owned my truck for 10 yrs now and have avg 15 as daily driving but on trips that are highway and 300 plus miles u can do about 19 to 20 mpg

 

I have 22,000 on my truck and the display sits mostly around 14.8-15.5 when doing city driving. 17.5-18.5 for Highway driving. Keep it under 70 and you’ll be in the upper range for highway mpgs. Another thing I’ve noticed about my truck, and it’s a no brainer, but if the truck idles a lot, it’ll tank the mpg display. Could be one of many reasons why this gauge is saying 12.

 

I have a 2016 FFV 5.7L V8 4x4 crewmax. I feel the need to notify the public that my car was having really really bad rough starts in the morning - didn’t matter if weather was cold or warm - first start of the day always sounded like the engine was choking. I googled online and found this site and many other message boards about the Alcohol Density Calculation problems and the need to “reflash” the ECM (see Toyota Service Bulletin T-SB-0058-13).
I took the truck in to the dealer yesterday, they did a cold start this morning after it sat in the lot overnight, and concluded it had this problem that is specific to FFV Tundra engines.
The service advisor said that Toyota just came out with a new TSB a few days ago updating the old TSB so that it now covers the fuel pump and the “reflashing” of the ECM, it now also covers all FFV Tundras from 2009 - 2019. The new TSB is T-SB-0166-19.
So I hope this info helps, hit up your dealer if you are having enginestart-up problems with your FFVengine Tundras, and pass the word around!
If I had known about these engine issues, I would have NEVER bought a FFV engine!!!
This TSB engine fix is only good if you’re under 96 months or 80,000 miles!!!
