Idle time...

Any one ever let ther engine idle for long period of time? With a/c running? Are the engines built like a semi rig? lol was at work today from 830am to 330pm slept in back with a/c running that ok on truck?

 

Not really... the oil pressure is low on idle coolant is not flowing fast enough (transfer).. if you could keep it at 1500 rpms it would help.

I remember if I can find it I will post it but for every hour a engine idles it's like 10,000 highway miles on a gasoline engine.

If we had diesel engines it doesn't matter(they are designed that way).. gasoline engines aren't..

 

Well we are group didn't do much today and it was super hot n muggy so I sat n back slept with truck running and a/c on medium speed was wondering if that was good on engine

 

Honestly for 7 hours of idle .. no..

 

What I did was nap in truck for a long time with a/c running from 830am to 330pm jus wondering if bad on engine

 

Today's modern engines don't need warming up to do the advance ecm of today's cars and trucks.. the ecm is able to calculate and do the math fast. Soon as oil pressure is reached go.

cooling down is only used with engines that have turbo chargers(reason: so the bearings in the turbo charger cool down from the oil, from high speed rpms, this also applies to diesel also)

 

You're good bro. I've heard arguments from both sides too; oil pressure, temperature, thermostat, etc. Tundras have a check valve in the oil system to keep the pressure stable and IMHO idling is easiest on the engine.

I had a work buddy who swore that idling the engine for a good 5 minutes before driving was the best thing since sliced bread. There must be something to it b/c he had a 15 yr old Ford station wagon with over 250k miles on it.

Damn you just put 70,000 miles on your truck in one day!!!! Personally, I would never idle a car for more than like 15 minutes. Without air running through the engine, it gets really hot in there. Especially if it was hot enough that you needed AC.

 

Dang, I can't imagine why they don't put a device in the engine compartment to pull air across the radiator. WHY TOYOTA!?!?! WHY!?!?!?

 

It's just Toyota it's all.. gasoline engines are not designed that way to idle for long periods.

One thing guys gasoline is a very very dirty fuel.. it leaves carbon and everything else behind when not burned at temperature.. idle is just that.. idle it just enough to keep engine going but not enough to properly burn fuel in turn it leaves deposits behind..

I remember I couple years back on a GM truck that was idled alot. Reason came in for a miss fire and when we put a camera down in the pistons it needed a tare down from all the carbon.. even the sleeves where damaged..

 

If you guys are worried about heat, you need to re-watch this commercial.

I have idled for extensive periods of time and my oil pressure and temp gauges have never ever moved even a fraction. SAME temp and pressure as at any higher RPM.

95° yesterday n with heat index 105° no clouds or shade and very very humid half work group sitting ther vehicles doing same

 

Yeah, search for the 'behind the scenes' version of that video. It was done with no camera tricks or animations, they sprayed it down for the safety of the stunt driver. Pretty intense, and also true for all the other commercials they did. My favorite was this one.
