Column shifter or Floor shifter?

Just curious what option is more favorable.

Comment which one you have and if you would prefer to have the other. Disregard the Toyota options...(ie: center console by default means floor shifter)

 

This is my first (automatic) truck with the center console and 'floor' shifter. I love it and I wouldn't want to go back.

The manual transmissions I've owned have always been on the floor of course but I assume we're only discussing automatics here.

 

I have a column shifter. In my '06 Taco, I had the floor shifter, and being able to say I've had both I would prefer a column in a truck. There is just something about pulling down on a column shifter in a truck, floor shifter is fine for a car. IMHO

 

Correct, automatics.

 

I have the column and I love it.
I love having the ability to fold up for a middle seat if needed and it has a much bigger armrest.

 

I like my space so floor shifter is what I prefer with my capt type seat/area not a fan of bench seats but they do have more spacious feel in the truck

 

My previous pickups have all been column shift. This is my first floor/console shift. My only complaint is that I keep grabbing the wiper handle to put it in gear. I like having the console for storage, and the floor shift is just part of the console. Column or floor wouldn't make much difference as long as I have my console (and steamer trunk size storage, and cup holders, and places for a few other odds and ends).

 

I've used my middle seat at least a dozen times. Very useful for me at times when needed.
It's all personal preference.
In the end it wouldn't make or break it either way for me.

 

I have the "bench" seating however I've seen the "bucket" seating as well, and does Toyota take the bucket seats, add a tertiary middle seat (separate of course) and just call that bench seating? Because both main front seats in mine are adjustable... its not a typical bench truck seat that they offered in the 70's which is, in my opinion, a TRUE bench seat.

 

Floor. Although my grandma liked her column shifter in her old Delta 88 Olds.

 

heh.. that was my first car; 1979 delta 88. it was big and underpowered.

 

Column shifters are so '70ish.

 

My grandma wouldn't own anything but Delta 88s. I forgot what engine she had in her last one but was huge. As far as column shifters. They are nothing but a royal pain in the ass when 4 wheeling. I don't want anything even remotely near the steering wheel.

ya, mine had a 350 with 160hp, 260torque, and a 3 speed auto.

 

Our onsite calibration vehicles have column shifters. All of us at work hate it. One of our new POS RAM vans has the shifter sticking out from the dash. No one even wants to drive that one.

 

I opted for the 3rd seat in the front plus the column shifter. If I could go back I probably would have gone with the larger middle console plus the floor shifter due to the lack of storage in these trucks. Plus there are some pretty neat replacement shifter handles for the floor version.

Never really use the middle seat either like I imagined I would.

 

How long before the shifter disappears completely? Transmissions are moving away from mechanical to electronics and some are a knob selection now. At what point will it all be a touch screen? The GSA killed the pushbutton shifter in the 60's, but I don't see a move away from column or floor shifters being opposed these days.

 

The shifter can really disappear now. Since the transmission is all electronic all you need is push button and your done.

Dodge has the small electric dial knobs on the dash, just a quick turn and it shifts. Really nice. Hoping to see something like that on Tundra soon.

 

I'd have to agree with most, I prefer the floor shifter ... especially if I'm using the "S" mode. The column shifter feels old school, but I do like having the bench seat incase I need to carry 6 people or if the wifey wants to get close to me.

 

I say they should bring back the push button shifter on the dash..... Damm I'm old

 

I've got to admit, the floor shifter is ok. I see the point most of you are making. At times it is easier to shift than column however the folding center seat offers an immense amount of arm rest space. Granted it doesn't have deep storage like the console would offer, but there are two storage areas, one more conspicuous than the other.

All I know is I DON'T want this kind of shifter!!!

 

Column shifter, good for doing it in the front seat. Floor shifter, good for installing a safe in the arm rest. The crewmax has a big enough back seat... so my vote is a floor shift. But there is something nice about being able to hang your hand off the column shifter.

 

What if I told you that I only got 2 seats with the RCSB SR5 .... I almost bought the Dlx just for the 3rd seat, but glad I've got the one I have now

 

I bet Anton Yelchin wishes he never bought a jeep with a shifter like that...
