Double Cab Sub Box Review

So after much debate and failed attempts there just isn't enough room behind the seat of the double cab for a sub box. I debated moving the seat and relocating brackets but that's a shit ton of hassle and work I just didn't feel up to doing. The alternative was going under the seat with a shallow sub and removing the storage which I wanted to avoid but after reviewing what all I had in the storage area under the seat I felt I could deal without it. I don't off road so there were minimal items being stored. I got to searching and decided early on to be thrifty as I was with the rest of the build and component selection however a vehicle specific box was difficult to be thrifty with. I built my own and i'm not too proud to say it was an utter failure as far as being "tuned" for the sub or any sub for that matter. I regrouped and decided to go for a field goal at the least since a touch down was out. I found a few options on ebay of all places and one that happened to be very local to me. The cost was reasonable $98 for a single 10" enclosure for under the drivers rear seat. after a phone call I felt very comfortable with the purchase and pulled the trigger and boy am I glad I did. The box arrived yesterday and I swapped it out. Up to this point I was pointing the finger at the sub as I put a borrowed sub in my enclosure and it worked much better (not ideal but I figured that was frequency tuning). So I was setting myself up for disappointment that I had a blown sub or damaged sub and the box wasn't going to do anything for me. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. I half heartedly pulled my box and swapped the sub and wiring into the new box, dropped it in place and fired it up. I smiled from ear to ear so long it hurts still today. The sub I thought was damaged was hitting like a mofo and is damn decent regardless of music type. I went with a sealed enclosure because I listen to mostly rock but I do listen to some old school rap on occasion and was worried it would sound like shit. Nothing to be worried about with my setup which is the single 10" enclosure and a Kicker Comp VT shallow sub. They custom build boxed for a ton of vehicles, looks like they cover all the bases for Tundras from any year and configuration. Great quality and couldn't be happier.

They are about 30 mins from me..I'm suppose to take my truck there so they can measure the area behind the back seat of my 2017 dc

 

I was going to take the trip as well but the phone conversation was reassuring enough and it wouldn't have saved anything on the price at all since they ship for free.

I spoke to them and the reason they don't have a box for a 2017 dc is because no one have brought one in for measurement

Old thread but I’m looking at purchasing this box and was wondering what subwoofer you used. Also did it raise the seat up at all or does it still sit at the original height?

 

With that box as is it sits flush.. They modified that box to fit my soundquebe 8". I ended up raising the seat about an inch an a half to make it sit flush again

 

No raise of the seat at all, I used a Kicker comp shallow 10" and it hits like crazy. I also cut my original under seat storage since it wasn't selling on craigslist to use the other 1/2 of it for storage still. Worked out quite well.

 

This is how my box was modified. See how I raised the seat. And that's my 8 inch sub. 600watts RMS 1200 peak dual two ohms

 

Totally digging that soundqubed Hds8. Ive been wanting to do a build with those since they came out. Safe to assume you're happy with it?

Thats awesome. My old hds 12 was solid up to around 750-800 watts. The 8" uses the exact motor, coil, and soft parts as the rest of the hds family if i remember right.

Just throwing that out there cause soundqubed likes to be modest with their power ratings and do handle a nice bit more power safely. They are also super awesome at responding to questions through emails. Almost always get a responce by the next day.

 

Any idea what I should expect when comparing it to a JL 12w1v3 in a sealed box?
Had that for about 3 years and felt it was a perfect fit for my needs but unfortunately that sub won’t fit in any box I’ve found for my DC. I don’t have any experience with shallow mounts so I’m not sure if I should be going the single 12 route or dual 10.

 

When it comes to shallow mount subs, its slim pickin's.
AmericanBass, Kicker, Fosgate, and Pioneer all make one and from my experience were all respectable performers when it comes to shallow mounts. They are reasonably priced but i don't think you can really fairly compare them with a standard styled sub of the same price range..... unless!

Unless you have a much less restrictive budget then that brings in a few more subs that are on a whole different level than the above mentioned.

Theres not much of an inbetween that i know of. but the first brands mentioned still are pretty damn good. theres also alpine and kenwood that make a shallow.

 

Found a JL 12TW1-4 at a reasonable price but am unsure if it would fit this box.

The jl requires 4.85" (a hair over 4 and 3/4 inches)of mounting depth.
The box mounting depth is 4.5".

But due to the clever design by jl their sub only needs about .85"(hair over 3/4 inch) of clearance for the outward cone travel.

You might be able to add a half inch spacer ring to the cut out for the sub and end up with the needed mounting depth and still have the clearance needed between the subwoofer's cone and the floor.

Thats definitely in the realm of posibilities. All you need to know is what the floor clearance is. If its at least an 1 inch and 3/8 i think it would be just enough.

Totally worth a phone call. Hell, they may be able to make a bump out the like they did for xj without needing to raise the rear seat.

Super old thread I know, but I'm trying to figure out a good storage solution for the other half of my under seat area. I also have a sub box under one side.

 

What I've seen people do is take the DC under seat storage box and cut off the part that is occupied by the sub box. So one side under the seat is your sub the other is a storage compartment.

 

Another option I'll throw out there for anyone not interested in going with a custom box from tech12volts is the Kicker CompRT loaded enclosure, specifically the 48TRTP102. Its a well built down firing enclosure with a 10" CompRT (4 ohm DVC) and a complimenting 10" passive radiator. It fits perfectly under the 60 side of the back seat. For a non custom solution that bumps this will satisfy most.

 

Does this require cutting out the 60 side of the storage box?
