Sr5 4x4 and 2wd

Hey guys I have a 2018 Tundra SR5 4x4 (not) the TRD model anyway I test drove a few models and after I bought the sr5 4x4 it seems like the tranny doesn't shift as soon as the 2wd model same truck seems like my truck stays in gear a little longer before shifting than the other model I drove..what do you think??

 

One had a tow package. One didn't?

 

Really so you think the shifting from 1st to 2nd to Second To Third maybe different because of that because the shifting is only different in those gears it seems like

 

Just seems like the 2wd was a little snappier in the first 3 gears shifting .but I'm new with tundras and 4x4 so I might just be over evaluating it but then again it's a $42k truck ..lol

 

I have a 2018 4x4 sr5 and noticed the same thing. I bought a pedal commander to make it more responsive haha

 

Is it possible the weight of the 2wd is significantly less? No idea really. But you bought the 4x4 so fuhgeddaboudit. Great purchase. (I have some TRD wheels and tires for sale from my 2018 if you're interested...)

Search for "beast mode" in the other threads on here. There are guys that disable the traction control (?) to give it more pep off the line.

 

Ya the 4x4 weighs about 500lbs more than 2wd but I'd assume that they would shift the same . I think you can change the shift points but idk for sure I'm just making sure that its normal that the 4wd model shifting a little slower is normal

 

Our tundras sort of learn the way we drive. If you drive slow most of the time it will learn and short shift. I notice mine is out of first gear right away and into second. I’d say give it some time and it will smooth out.

 

Learning the way we drive sounds about right with the technology of these cars just weird that one truck with the same transmission and engine would shift differently than the other. If it's normal then I'm not going to worry about it just wish I can get past it so I can enjoy the truck I paid a lot of money for LOL

 

Yup don’t even think about it and let the computer learn. If you ever want to restart the learning process disconnect the battery for a bit

 

Yeah I remember back in the day they wanted you to do that when you change the exhaust from stock to Performance

 

I have two cm 5.7L V8 Tundras. One 4x4 and the other 2wd. The 2wd is lighter than the 4x4, so, I guess that the shift points are slightly different. But, to be honest with you, they both shift the same way to me. I actually prefer my 4x4 over my 2wd, because it seems to have a bit more gonads than the 2wd.

 

Is that the TRD model??

 

Yup, both of them are TRDs. 2014 TRD and 2017 TRD, both 5.7L.

CORRECTION: my 2014 is not TRD!!!

 

Oh okay I didn't know that they made a 2wd TRD I thought all TRD models were 4x4

Correction, my 2014 2wd is not TRD. The TRD is only available in 4x4. Sorry for the confusion.

I might do what a guy on here suggested to disconnect the battery and reprogram it

 

Blasphemy! Rear wheel drive is faster.

I have Bully Dog on both Tundras. You do not need to remove any battery cables to add the BD tuners or any other tuner that I know of. Now, if your truck is stock all the way through, he may be suggesting that you try to reset the computer by removing the negative battery cable. But, I don’t think that will make any difference in the shift points of your truck.

There is a possibility that the dealership may have an update program for your ECU. Every time I take my trucks in for service, I know that they plug their computer into my OBDII, and if there are any updates, it will automatically install the update at that time. So, you can try going to the dealership and tell them that your vehicle is running sluggish and you want it checked out, and see what they say.

 

Lol. I don’t know about that. But, if the laws of physics holds true, rwd is lighter than 4x4, so it should be quicker of the line than the 4x4.

Ok, cool. I don’t know that the TRD Sport came in a 2wd. Thanks for the info. I always associated TRD with off-roading and 4x4.

 

I used to think the same thing. Before I was a Toyota guy I secretly liked Tacomas and Tundras. I started looking closer at the TRD models when I saw them. I was always looking for the IFS. That’s when I noticed that it seemed all the TRD sports that I saw were 2wd. I almost want to say that I’ve even seen some TRD off road 2wd Tacos. Maybe because they have a locking rear differential?

 

Now you’ve gotten my curiosity. So, went to Toyota.com and built a 2wd sr5 with a trd off-road package. To my surprise, they offer everything that you can get with the 4x4 trd package, on a 2wd Tundra. so, I guess that I can let my teenage son put some trd decals on his truck like he always wanted to do, now

 

Don’t let him put TRD off-road 4 x 4 LOL

 

Not to change the subject entirely but does anybody know the best deal on some 33 inch mud tires with black rims . I'm on a budget after spending as much as I did on this truck LOL

But, to be fair, I drive it like it's a 4x4.
