So I may look for a used one eventually. Is there a reason you didnt go with the 184 version with the dinette slide out? Are the slides more problematic for leaking and maintenance?

 

Yes. Added wieght, $$$ and another mechanism to fail. The downside is a small dinette which we can live with. We cook and eat outside 90% of the time. Got a couple of folding stools and the kids sit at the end of the table. We camp in an area where it really doesn’t rain that much so we wanted the smallest trailer that we would be comfortable in. There’s four of us , myself, wife , 13 and six year old and two dogs. Not spacious by any means but we don’t spend a lot of time inside during the day.

 

Sounds like us except younger kiddo. Will be working on a second soon. We also have 2 dogs but they can stay outside in their crates with blankets.

It doesnt rain too often here but when it does, it can come down a turd floater. Then if I do drag one up hunting in the fall months it gets chilly at night. Snowed and sleeted on me a couple years ago too so wanted something that would keep me warm and dry.

 

Rental can be pretty expensive. They want $350- $450 for a Thurs - Monday. Suppose that's a lot cheaper than spending 20 grand on something you dont really want.

 

We picked up a Forest River Grey Wolf 22BH back in July, and have really enjoyed it. We are a family of 4, 2 little ones (3 and 5), and the bunk is perfect for them. I would not want anything larger, or smaller. The total length is 27', max weight is right around 7500, dry weight of around 4600. I weighed it with all of our stuff for a 3 day trip and it was right at 5800lbs. We have been really happy with it. Just my .02.

 

What part of the country do you live in? How is the fuel economy towing at that size and weight?

 

Southern Oregon, it's pretty mountainous over here. MPG is around 8 towing on average.

Yeah I had seen your grey wolf in another post. Think I'm going to stick to something in the 19ft -23ft max range and under 4500 dry weight. I'll try renting a couple and see what works and what doesnt.

Nothing wrong with that, just giving some input. I will say if you do buy new, there is A LOT of mark up. There was a lot of back and forth before we settled on a price. Don't be afraid to walk if it doesn't feel right.

 

Thanks man I really do appreciate your input. Did you have them work in the generator, hoses, whatever other accessories you might have needed? Feel like if I do buy from a dealer id like to just have them roll it all into one package rather than having to shop around for onesies and twosies.

 

Our dealer gives you a $80 credit towards accessories in their shop, which weren't terribly marked up. They filled the propane tanks and installed an Interstate battery as well. We had them throw on a weight distribution hitch as well. I'm sure you could get creative, figure out how much the stuff you want is, and work that in the deal. We got all the basic stuff first:. Hoses, wheel chocks, leveling blocks, water filter, TP, septic cleaner, and a 30a to 115 volt house adapter. We went out somewhere close by, tested it out, and made a list of needs and wants, then went from there. There is still a ton of stuff I want to get for it, but we are prioritizing, and getting it a little at a time.
