Anza-Borrego, October 19-21. Easy wheeling with camping for anyone that wants to do that. Come out and play with us?!!

Edit: and whether or not you want to join us, we'll very much appreciate your recommendations for easy routes and good camp spots (that will accomodate 10 +/- trucks).

Possible. I was planning on doing one of my annual "family run" trips in October, too; I usually leads randoms throughout most of Anza to cover some tourist spots, hikes, vista points, and short trails.

Kris, we'd love to have your help. If nothing else, skill-based route ideas would be awesome (e.g., beginner vs. advanced, etc.).

Yea, I don't mind helping out. There's really nothing hard out there except two obstacles: The Squeeze and Heart Attack Hill. Lower Coyote Canyon is a good one to introduce beginners to but there's a ton of other stuff, such as Calcite Mine, The Notches, Truckhaven training grounds, Brokenshaft Gulch, Sandstone Canyon, Diablo Drop-off. I know all the tourist attractions and "secret spots", too. Not sure how big of a group you guys are planning on having but you need a permit for anything over 10. There's also Superstition to the Southeast. There's a shooting area next to some railroad tracks. Some good hikes are the famous Palm Canyon hike but there's also the old trestle bridge, which is the largest standing one in the country. A few short ones are the slot canyons, wind caves, mud caves, and so forth. There are a few tourist attractions in Ocotillo Wells that are "meh" but I guess everyone should see them at least once. Then there's the famous metal sculptures in Borrego Springs. The popular Font's Point vista is good, too. Honestly, there's a lot of stuff to do out there for people that haven't been there at all or only once or twice. I've just been out there way too many times over the last 8 years.

Im glad you checked in, Kris! This is very much a family-friendly run. Your list of possibilities is awesome, and we appreciate your knowledge of the area! (Plus I'm excited to meet you and see your truck up close!)

Several of us did lower Coyote Canyon and Sandstone Canyon last January and those were easy, fun, and we could probably do those again without being bored, especially if we add other routes to make a full day of wheeling. I'd rather drive than hike this trip, but others may feel differently. And I'll go along with the team.

My honey and a friend have not much interest in wheeling so, while my son and I play in the truck, probably will do a hike. Then all meet back at camp. So the sooner we figure out where we'll camp, the sooner they can decide where to hike.

For sure! I don't know how many times I've smacked my head getting into my old '85 Hi-Lux. I still do it sometimes when getting in the wife's Skyline or my 4Runner.

How was the fishing? Fall colors usually lead to great fishing for some browns

Anza is so wide open and diverse anyone can have fun no matter your truck build or driving level. I took my previous 2wd tundra out there many times and really only worried about getting stuck in sand playing on small dunes. But even then we all have straps and can get anyone out of almost any situation.
So any word on the number of trucks going on this trip?

Not good. I reckon we were doing something wrong. Lots of talk of browns at the marina, but no one was catching any that I saw. Super windy, but otherwise ideal conditions. I’m fresh out of excuses.

No idea. My guess is less than 20 since a lot of folks’ schedules don’t allow for “short notice” trips like this. We’ll see I guess.

A wha? No, the guy at the marina swore anything garlic would work. Powerbait wasn’t the answer I guess. I’ll hit you up for suggestions before we head out again.

He was a Toyota master mechanic and now does his own thing. He isn't super cheap, but way cheaper than the dealer and he does excellent work from maintenance to custom stuff.
I can PM you his number if needed. He lives in Vista, CA if that's within a reasonable distance for you.
