Guys need some expert opinions. I know my truck tool box isn't going to be hauling around gold, but I'd like the lock as secure as I could get it.

I bought a Ridgid gang box that I'll be mounting in the back of my truck.
    http://m.homedepot.com/p/RIDGID-32-in-x-19-in-Portable-Storage-Chest-2032-OS/100189569

And after doing a little looking at padlocks online (damn internet ruins everything), I found that master lock really sucks. They are about the easiest padlock to drill or pick.

This it what is recommended for the box.
    http://www.masterlock.com/personal-use/product/M5XT

The lock needs and inner shackle height of 1 inch to work with the box.

So knowing you can find what you need on the internet, I did some searching for a more secure lock with that shackle height.

I found that Stanley makes a nice lock thats a lot harder to drill and pick with the height I needed. There weren't any stores in Texas that sold these locks and I couldn't find anywhere online the length of the lock when it's locked. So I decided to buy a set on Amazon and if they didn't work, send them back.

In order to make sure it's completely recessed in the box's steel, it would have to be 3.25 inches.

    This is the lock.
    http://www.stanleyhardware.com/detail/cd8824-laminated-steel-padlock-s828-236

Everything fit except that the lock length when closed is 3.75 inches. So it sticks out of the box a half inch.

Do you guys think the end of the lock could be cut easily? I'm wondering if it is really going to make any difference since its probably a lot more secure than a regular truck box. Any suggestions of a better lock? It has to be steel. There are a bunch of aluminium ones that would work, but those are drilled a lot easier.

    Thanks!

    Here are the pics.

Not to blow your internet search up more on this..

you only need two tools to bust open any lock.. I will not post what they are but we have done it in shop for a customer and it works.

Busted the lock right in two in about 15 seconds. Locks only slow thieves down doesn't stop them.

Yeah I've seen a lot of videos online. But my thought was they would be harder to get into than the little locks on regular truck boxes. And unless you practice getting into these locks, it's not easy.

But aside from that, what to you think about the lock not being completely recessed? Think it would be easier cutting into the box or the exposed part of the lock?

I don't think your typical theives would mess with that setup.

If there was a mechanically inclined thief that knew exactly what was in the box and wanted it, if they have the time and concealment to try to get in, they will defeat whatever you do.

A bit off topic but is your box typically in plain view or do you cover it with a tonneau?

If you can get a lock completely recessed you stand a better chance.

Remember any gap on a lock is a weak point. It can used against it.

I haven't done any research on defeating these locks, and I'm not a thief, but if I were to use a cutting tool to try to get in I would def start at the lock because it isn't completely recessed.

It's about 4 inches shorter than the bed height. I don't have a cover, but I've considered it. One of the reasons i went with a box mounted to the bottom of the bed.

So far from what I've found out there, that only leaves me with aluminum locks or master lock. Both can be easily drilled.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too.

It looks like any lock that fits and is truly a good lock is 100 dollars or more.

That's one thing I like about your box over mine. You can use a pretty legit lock. Mine just has the cheap little one built into the handle.
    Anything helps.

Well the anything helps part is what I was thinking. I may be over thinking the lock sticking out, but maybe not.

The only bad thing about a box like this is it leaves wasted space unlike regular boxes. But I just needed more security. The railroad doesn't exist in the nice part of town. At least in Texas it doesn't.

I think buying a tonneau would be worth the investment for you. Although they can all be defeated, I think the whole out of sight, out of mind thing comes into play, unless the bad guy already knows it's there.

Would you consider welding a thick piece of plate steel with a lock sized hole cut out of it? Then you could repaint the welded and new steel. I bet it would be fairly cheap to have a shop plasma cut out some 1/2" or 3/4" parts.

Good work finding the more secure locks. That is more then most guys would do.
I always wonder if thieves carry around cordless angle grinders..

I like how deep our beds are.

I thought about using half inch bar stock to go around the outside of the opening. Just hate to do it to a brand new box. If I can't find the lock I'm looking for, I may do it though.

    Here are my thoughts:
    1. With the lock being inset in the box you are eliminating the typical and easiest why that people get past locks. BFH with a downward hit. Easy especially on combination locks.
    2. Not many people will go around truck to truck with a drill or saw just to see what is inside a tool box. Too much risk for potentially no reward.
    3. The lock that hangs out past the edge of the box could lead to someone trying to hit it with a hammer with hopes of breaking it but most likely wont succeed. Again very low risk of someone with a saw to try to get in. Should be ok.
    4. A lock that is highest rated for lock picking protection is what you want.

Well here is what my friend did when he lost his keys during a camping trip. Nothing was working to get just the locks off. After he got the locks off he welded the box up again.

Man he tore that box up! Well thanks guys. If the main thing is picking, I think I'll go with the Stanley Lock. They are a little harder to pick since they are 6 pin locks. I think I'm going to return these and get the little better housing. I hate that they stick out, but oh well. After days of looking at padlocks and talking to some locksmiths, I'm seeing there is no really good lock for a job box. I just hope since its sticking out it doesn't look like it's unlocked and inviting to mess with. This is the lock I'm exchanging for. Same size just hardened steel body. What do you think?

Thanks for the comments and help on this. I finally found another lock other than the master lock that will fit these things without sticking out. I'd buy those Stanley locks all day long. They are pretty good for only paying 35 buck for two 6 pin locks. But going on all the advice and Brian's suggestion of finding one that's not easily pickable by the smash and grab kind of thief and a lock that will sit in the recessed hole, of all the locks out there, I found ONE that would fit.
I bought them off of Amazon, but used the ABUS website to find the dimensions and features.

    https://www.amazon.com/ABUS-83-45-300-Rekeyable-Zero-Bitted/dp/B000ZHD0FA

These locks can be cored with just about any type of key out there, but for now and maybe always, I'll use the schlage key setup they come with. Both locks come zero bitted, meaning it needs to go to a locksmith to have it set up.

You would think I'm doing the mod of my life, as much effort I put into finding a damn padlock...:locked:

Oh well, on to a little weather stripping and something to keep the lock from making a bunch of clanking around while driving. Ive got a decision on mounting it too and I'll post pics when I'm done.

But just in case anyone else is looking for this information, here it is and hope it helps.

I had about an hour and a half to mess with this today, but this is what I've come up with to mount this box. I bought some half inch hdpe from Amazon and cut it to fit in the larger gaps in the truck bed. I was going to use the router to make water pathways, but figured if I didn't screw up with the router, they would probably get clogged with tree junk or something. Anyway I figured water would flow well enough since I left some space on either side. The bumps on the bed are just shy of a half inch, so the box won't be sitting directly on the bed, which is what I was wanting. Hopefully this plastic will hold up well.

Of course I'll be mounting the box near the cab. Just showing how they fit.

Finally ready to mount this thing. I added marine weather stripping all the way around the top and in the lock holes.

Lookin' good! Would a box like that need some ventilation to prevent moisture/condensation in there?

Thanks! I think so. I wasn't sure exactly how much, but around the locks it's not completely sealed and there is a small drain hole in the bottom. I was thinking that would be enough.

Nice! Good choice on the lock. From my experience working in the ghetto, MOST thieves look for the easy snatch and grab. Not to say you won't get wheels taken off or a damn loaded trailer with your brand new hustler mower. It's unlikely but still possible. Moral - nothing is really safe, but still better to take precautions.

    Liking that weatherstrip seal btw!

Bolted down the bed box this morning. I used galvanized carriage bolts, washers, lock washers and red lock tight. I'm very happy with it!

This is as close as I could come forward so the lid would open fully and not touch the rail. I'm ok with that since I'll be able to clean behind it when needed.

Got all the heavy things that could fly around in the cab secured.
