To me the tundras are too big to exo, and they coast too much to do an internal... but some of the sgu guys probably could benefit form one... but who am I to talk, I rolled my 4runner when I had a cage for it sitting in my garage....

A little of this and a little of that. Its pretty run of the mill.
I feel like there’s a misconception as to what SGU is or does. No one is really driving in a manner that I would deem dangerous except maybe Alex. And I’m as risk averse as they come.

Yeah, we’re not like desert racers, or even chase truck drivers (not actually sure which is worse though). None of us is ever really on the edge of control I don’t think - just a little faster than average maybe.

I’d still like a little more metal between my mellon and the ground though. Not a race cage, but more like an 80s era roll bar inside and welded.

But I need gears first so I can go faster.

I hear that stuff a lot. Although I don't do it much any longer, I used to rock climb quite a bit and I learned that you have to take people's advice/beta with a grain of salt. One person's idea of dangerous doesn't seem dangerous to others. One person might say "oh, I am extremely careful, and that there is nothing scary about that climb" - and then you find yourself halfway up the second pitch scared out of your mind and seriously wondering if you are going to live to see the next day. Point is, I don't think it is a misconception. You guys post plenty of videos, and I have seen a couple where if something went a little wrong, bad stuff would ensue. But, accidents happen in pretty much any activity.

Comfort zones are a real thing - just like you said, we each have our own. I’ve been the passenger in some trucks (non-SGU) and felt super uncomfortable because I wasn’t in control. Then run the same section at a higher speed behind the wheel. And I’ve been the passenger in a truck (also non-SGU) and felt extremely comfortable because I knew the driver was in his zone.

I suppose all things are relative. I’ve stuck myself with a fishing hook and now don’t like fishing. LoL

Always. Unless I have to lean out to see. Then I just slip out of the shoulder belt and leave the lap in place. Or unbuckle, look, and rebuckle.

If you have a cage then you must wear a helmet. Otherwise something simple and under control could slam your melon into that cage and knock you out. That could be on the street or in the dirt. So it protects in some situations but can be dangerous in other. Not gonna wear a helmet for 3 hrs while driving on the hwy to camp or trailhead. Or to the store to pick milk. It becomes a different vehicle at that point.

I can see the helmet argument for certain cases. I used to just make sure I was harnessed in and also used padding on the bars. I can sort of see the argument that it might be more dangerous with a cage in normal driving around town or on the highway. At my height, my head is going to hit something anyway.....I am close to the roof in almost all vehicles. World is built for short people.

    Always.

Again, let me share with the world on how hard headed I am, and how stupid hurts.

This was one of the worst off-roaring trips in my life. We went to the top of a trail called Iron Chest, right outside Buena Vista, CO. The hardest part is the rock garden at the very beginning. Other than that, easy trail. Most of you could take your Tundras on 33-35’s.
I had some buddies that were headed out to Africa to be all they could be, so we did an all nighter at 12000+ ft of elevation. Well it rained and stormed all night. In fact, the water was coming down the mountain so fast, it flooded out my tent (and two others tents). So two large breed dogs and myself were cold, soaking wet, and no sleep. I ended up putting my dogs in the Jeep, I climbed in with them and ran the heater to warm up. Did this all night.
Anyway, so none of us had a bit of sleep. We came down the mountain and right before the rock garden, my one dog was just pissing me off because he wanted outside. My other 65 lb dog wanted to stay inside.

This is were the whole story is coming to the ah haaa!

I got back in and couldn’t put my factory seat belt back on, since it was locked due to being off camber. I went into the rock garden and attempted several times to put the seat belt on with no luck.
Almost out of the trail, and this happened.
    7331DCAB-1082-4101-81AE-C4A741CC0D25.jpg

Slowest flop of all time. My friend behind me even heard me say “oh fuck, this is gonna hurt” and hurt it did. I grabbed the steering wheel, braced with my legs. When the impact happened, I was ripped out of my seat and slammed into the passenger side, with a rather large rock, and glass everywhere.
Then I got the pleasure of a 65 lb dog landing on top of me.
So now I was hurting from the rock I just slammed into, cut up from the glass and claws of my dog that was freaking out.
Now I had to grab a dog that’s freaking out, pick him up over my head and get him out of the drivers side window. Great! Even more cuts.

We uprighted the Jeep rather quickly and loaded up my junk on the trailer, and towed it back to my house two hours away.
    1C0ABB64-1A1D-46E0-B319-FA5C8391EFC6.jpg

Now it doesn’t look like much damage, but it came out to 7200.00.

At this point I knew I needed to build something a little more capable and safer.

A couple months later, this rolled out of my garage. Don’t make fun of my painting. I suck.

    BFD86FC6-4270-480A-B491-C6416EA25F24.jpg

    What did I learn?

    This:

-No more factory seat belts. I went back full race lap belts with harnesses. I kid you not, this flop was so slow it felt like time stopped, and yet I still was ripped out of my seat like a rag doll. Was it my fault for going forward? Yes. I even had the harnesses sitting in my garage at home. Stupid.
-I decided some cage work needed to be done and completed before heading out again.
    - no more unsecured pets in my vehicle. Period. That flippen hurts when a 65 lb dog lands on you. In fact, my dogs no longer were in the cab on any technical parts of trails.
    - before my horrific boating accident and lost all my guns, I thought my pistol was rather secured well. Yeah, not so much. I had a 1400.00 1911 pistol on the rocks, with glass, and scratched all up. Pissed I was. Glad that weapon sunk to the bottom of a lake along with the boat.

-This was also a good reminder why I tow my junk to and from trails. That Jeep was totally capable of driving 80 mph for long distances. When I actually started to assess the damage, a good portion of the factory axle brackets for the links had cracked welds. Thankfully, I didn’t just limp this home with the drivetrain in this poor of condition. I probably wouldn’t have made it safely.

So yeah, good idea to wear a seatbelt at all times, even on slow technical stuff.

Wow! A hard lesson. Thanks for tellin' us about it. And, yeah, compared to other pics you've shared, that rock garden looked "easy".

@ColoradoTJ Thats a crazy story and a good lesson for someone who drives a jeep on technical trails.

Like @roypark said, that hardly applies to us and how we drive. That doesn't even apply to 99% of the trucks that I've wheeled with. I can think of exactly one guy that I've met who needs a cage when he drives. And I can think of exactly zero technical trails that I've been on where there was even a remote possibility of rolling. Here is a video of the closest I've ever come to rolling. However, the entire time I was in The Truck I felt in control. The slide to the drivers side was done on purpose so I could even out the off camber lean.

    https://youtu.be/3YOfAc0tBbg

I'll say it again. I'll take good driving over a cage any day. I built The Truck to explore and camp and have fun. Ya'll can run cages if you want. You can let me know how that 7 hour drive to Utah feels the next time we do a longer trip

if you're talking about Matteo... that guy didnt need a roll cage, he just didnt need to be driving a supercharged "LT" tundra... that was what i would call reck-less abandon....

A little of this and a little of that. Its pretty run of the mill.
Matteo could have died in Death Valley but a cage wouldn’t have saved him. #youngdumbandfullofcum
