So my truck usually runs a trans temp between 120 and 160 depending on ambient temp and engine load. This weekend pulling our popup trailer over Chinook pass here in WA, it peaked at 221. My understanding is that anything over 200 is bad juju. Trailer isn't that heavy. 1200lb dry weight plus 10 gallons of water and gear...1500 lbs tops?

Any thoughts on this as I'm only using 20% of my rated tow capacity?

As a side note anyone know what temperature the AT Temp warning light comes on at?

    02 Tundra AC 4wd with 2UZ.

yep bank account is running low from it..
Was the transmission in higher gear lugging the engine down if so that raises the temp. 1500 pounds is nothing to the 2uz Fe or the transmission.

Is the color or the transmission fluid red and doesn't smell burnt does it? When was its last service oil change and filter change?

221 is high I would looking into changing out fluid and the filter.. the oil might be beyond it's service life and is breaking down in turn high temps when the oil is under load...

I was driving with OD off (as I always do towing). It was in 3rd gear most of the time at around 2000 rpm. Occasional downshift when I had to accelerate out of a corner.
Fluid is red and normal smelling. I haven't done a service in the past year (how long I've owned the truck). I guess that'd be a good thing to do....

Have it changed when you can, do it before you tow again.. make sure the trans cooler up front is clear of debris in the fins..

I'll get that done. Thanks Mike! Cooler is clear off debris. I heard that the cooler is only used when the fluid reaches a certain temperature. Is that true?.

I haven't dug into mine honestly. Toyota might have a temp release valve after say 180 it opens just like your thermostat does for your engine to cool the oil. Honestly oil temp valve in a transmission is a good failure point. If I was engineering it I wouldn't put it in..
