Man that’s horrible. Sounds like you need a new steel bumper with rigid reverse lights on it :quickdraw:

Thanks. It definitely sucks. Luckily just the hitch and the bumper. Guess I'll need to put a giant multi-ball receiver on the truck once it's fixed so that it only damages the car that hits me.

Idk if that would work with the 18 Safety Sense sensors.

Actually that could end up causing more damage to your frame if you're hit so I've heard..

Even show a tundra in demo picture. I think people are so stunned by how good looking the rear end is they just forget to hit their brakes...

84B5BDBF-C626-4F4A-8860-1B24A5AA554A.jpg Here’s a pic of the damage. Filed my claim today and spoke to the insurance company of the kid’s mom. They seem to think just the center of the bumper needs to be replaced. I’m going to look further after work since it seems to have bent the hitch as well. Looking at a multi ball B&W hitch receiver once this is fixed.

Take your truck to a certified toyota/lexus body shop and have it independently inspected and quoted just in case, never know if any frame damage occurs until it is measured.

Good idea. The more I look at it I think it’s just the center plastic piece of the bumper but two of the sensors for TSS are part of that piece so hard to say

I thought it was a hit and run. How did you get insurance information from the other party?

It was. Luckily my wife got their tag info and the highway patrol found the kid and his parents. Luckily the car is insured with Allstate.

Highway Patrol said he is. Not sure how that works with a 14 year old. Just glad his parents have insurance and I don’t have to file a claim with my insurance.

If you put a ball in the hitch receiver and you get hit, your frame will be at risk for taking the damage instead of your bumper doing its job. I know it seems counterintuitive but it is really not a good idea.

This happened to my Co-workers friend. He had his receiver in and got hit hard and it bent the frame and totaled the truck.

That does make sense. Guess there isn't much you can do to avoid being rear ended.

I think the "receiver in" idea only works at low impacts. I did have buddy at stop light in his 2500 where the person bumped into his receiver at < 5mph and it didn't do anything to his truck but messed up their car pretty good.

The hitch/receiver is just not designed to absorb large impacts.

Also, if you don't drive around with a receiver in all the time and start to it's only a matter of time before you walk around the truck and smash your shin, trip, etc. That = no fun. Ask me how I know.

MGM has 10 more horsepower than both the Black and Cement. Plus the chicks really dig it.

Remeber in terms of the .09% financing, usually taking advantage of that forfeits any rebates, when I have looked at it and done the math, the "true interst rate was higher than most banks would loan

True. Since I knew I was paying off the truck in the first month I went ahead and took as much $$ off of the price of the truck, instead of taking the 0% or lowest finance rate.

Make sure you have the entire truck checked out by your body shop!

@sbbrown333 don't let their insurance company tell you it's cosmetic or easy to repair.

When I had the first gen Tundra and got rear ended by a woman putting on makeup instead of looking at where she was going, caused my hitch to pierce her SUV's radiator, oil pan, and tranny (multiple colored liquids) to all spill out. Totaled her car but mine did not appear to be damaged - even drove fine afterwards.
But I took her into my insurance company's shop and they found damage that extended all the way to the front!

The certified shop found motor mounts were shifted, tranny mounts damaged, exhaust system hooks had dislodged, truck bed had small tears at the corners, dented the cab (bed moved forward over 4 inches during the collision) and the obvious trailer hitch damages.
The other party's insurance paid out over $8,000 in repairs !
I had to go thru my insurance company because the other insurance was unwilling to fix it correctly - then my insurance company surbrogated the cost back to the other party and got my deductible back.

Make sure the other party's insurance pays for a rental of a full sized truck during the repair duration.

And don't forget to file a diminished value claim after the repairs are done properly.
File against the other party's insurance because now your truck is worth less due to the accident.
Get a check from them for just the diminished value because it may hurt you later down the road when you sell it as it is now discoverable.

True. I will be taking it to a local Toyota dealer's collision center on Thursday to have them do an accurate estimate. Allstate of course mostly looks at it from the photos you send them, they don't actually show up in person anymore. He said just the center plastic piece of the bumper needs to be replaced, but like you said it could be much more. I definitely like the idea of the diminished value since my 6 day old check was already involved in an incident. How did you go about the diminished value claim? I also need to get Allstate to replace the car seats that my kids were in during the accident.

Never take your truck to other party's "approved" body shop for repairs - you will get screwed because the other party will want to avoid doing the repairs correctly. Choose your body shop that you feel comfortable with and make their insurance adjustor drive to your body shop's location for authorization.

As for the diminished value claim, you should consult your insurance company first and then ask an automotive attorney for their suggestion.

As for the child's seats - the other party will pay for those.

Glad no one got injured but make sure you do not sign away your right to file should someone feel injury later down the road.
Ask your attorney to review anything the insurance company gives you, asks for a signature, or pays you....
