What is your electric trailer brake setting at?

Everyone will be different and depending on weight, brake sizing, etc.

Do you know how to properly test the trailer brakes before you leave?

 

I've always heard to bring them to the point of locking up at about 20-25 mph using the manual lever.

 

Before leaving:

- Test full operation of the the trailer brakes. Apply full manual trailer brakes, place truck in drive and roll forward. You should not overcome the brakes. Apply a little fuel, again, the truck should not overcome the brakes.

-This next is setting the brakes rolling forward. Make sure you have ample enough space.
Set brake gain at 5. Roll forward at 5-10 mph. Apply service brakes (truck brakes) and this should also apply the trailer brakes. The trailer should have a little pull on the truck, but not jerking or hard pull. Unjust up or down on the feel. Your call. You can also test the trailer brakes again. At a roll, manually apply the trailer brakes (more than your setpoint) without locking up the trailer brakes, the trailer should stop you without any power.

Try not to ever lock up the trailer brakes. Getting flat spots on tires really brings on the suck.

On the other side of things, you also want to get the most out of your service/trailer brake systems.
In the mountains, I may set the trailer brakes a little tighter due to the Law of Inertia and the 1-10 rule. Remember, for every 10 car lengths you have in front of you, there will be at least one idiot that cuts you off.
