What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

My speedo is about 5km/h off since I went to 17" wheels. Would love to reset it.

 

Its all right here buddy, I went from 9.6% too fast (I'm doing 50 by GPS but speedo is doing 54) to perfect. Install is as easy as connecting a plug and running a few wires.

Today I topped off the air pressure using my new portable pump, played with the built in deflator too. Really happy with this, it's very quiet and practically operated on it's own. The transmission skid plate in the background is going on next weekend.

Looks good. Clean and functional. I've been thinking about a front receiver hitch so I could put a winch front or rear.

 

Put 400 highway miles on the 02’. Got about 385 miles out of the tank before filling it up. Needle was on ‘e’ so not sure about the extra gas amount in tank. Anyways, thats the best MPG’s I’ve gotten in a long time. Avg. about 15MPG on 285/75/r16’s. Had about 400lbs weight in vehicle.

Rear diff grumble disappeared with the Lucas 80w-90 mineral based oil change.

Still have high levels of confidence in the truck.

 

Found a shop that is willing to swap my wheel bearings out, even letting me bring in my own parts and the spindles without the truck. Going to set it up so I can tear down my suspension on a weekend and drop them off at the shop while I get all the other stuff done, then pick the spindles up on a Monday and have my truck back together.

After that just need my Fox's rebuilt and alignment done and I'm back to road worthy.

The funny part, I went to 2 different toyota dealerships asking if I can bring in the spindles and they can charge me parts and labor to swap, they both refused. One of them admitted that they outsource the pressing work and gave me the shop name they send it to. It's too far away and only open while I'm at work.

They can't do the job if I bring in my truck because they can't touch it with aftermarket parts, can't do just spindles for liability.

My corner service station has a press surprisingly. Found out they do all their pressing in house when asking about my propellor shaft joints.

 

You should put on spindle gussets while you have it tore apart. Total Chaos sells them around $40 bucks a set. I had them on mine when I rebuilt the factory front end and like the safety they add.

 

I have the gussets already not sure how effective they are but had them for a few years.

Sweet. Prepare for that sporty feeling on the shocks. Curious on your tire feedback when you get them on. I’m going to be in the market soon as the Michelin LTX ms2’s are not holding up as well as the original LTX ms.

You doing any other work in conjunction?

 

Nothing but the tires and shocks for now. I may be upgrading the stereo in the future. I’ll be posting my experience with these tires as time passes. Any personal experience would be greatly appreciated as this is my first time putting anything aftermarket on a vehicle. (Shop install)

 

I, like you are doing, had a shop do my work. I basically rebuilt my entire front end (lbj, lca, brakes, rotors, cam bolts, etc) at 158k with new shocks on all fours (Billys like yours set at one notch up from stock). I tow alot and like a front rake. The shocks are very nice riding. I can zip better (bob and weave) in traffic and my stopping distance has greatly improved. Towing is safer too.

You will be pleased. I did have to put u-joint brackets on my rear springs to prevent further splaying as the new shocks gave the rear additional height which provoked more splay. Had to jack rear up and bring the leafs back home to get the u-joints on. She is good to go now.

 

Is the splaying a common problem among the Tundra in particular? I’ve never heard of this problem before (owned 2006 F150 and 2010 Sierra). I’m planning on going notch #3. I'm assuming the ride gets more “sporty” the higher you go. Do you have a picture of your truck with the setup you described?

 

Yeah but it has a forward rake still even at one notch up from stock. The rear shocks (non adjustable) gave it a little lift (some here say shocks don’t add lift but mine has lifted slightly in the rear).

I tow so I want the forward rake for safety. If you are looking for ‘cool’ looks and leveling then go to top setting.

 

I’ve heard one other person have their drivers side splay on this site like mine did. Mine was about a 1/4” off on the drivers. Pass side nothing. After new shocks drivers side splayed another 1/4” and pass side splayed a little.

I attribute the additional splay to the new shocks. Jacked her up and clamped the leafs as straight as possible and put on some u-joints from the auto store up the street.

 

Had local tire shop carry out the warranty inspection on the Michelin M/S 2’s tread life. Waiting to here back on next step.

Heard back from tire store. The Michelin Corp office is offering a $90 each refund on only 2 tires. The other two are showing normal wear.

Looking at going with the Defender LTX M/S
4 tires out door with the $180 refund = $837 and change

May buy new trailer tires while I’m at it. They’re 4 years old. Its recommended that trailer tires be replaced every 3 years regardless of wear.

 

New tires for truck is always a fun thing to look forward to. I've been trying to decide what I will go with this December. Eyeballing the new Yoko muds, also like the Hankook muds, might just say who cares and go BFG AT for the first time in ten years.

 

Noooo. AT’s are for daily’s.

 

That's why I'm considering these. I got over 70k miles on my old Yoko ATs, since I don't drive my truck daily I can go a bit aggressive. These kind of remind me of the old BFG MT.

 

I like them. Reminds me of the old Cooper stt, before the pro. 285’s again?

 

Yeah potentially the last 285s. When they wear out I'm hoping to go to 315s.
