Does TSS have real value?

There are already several good threads regarding TSS problems. I guess my question is more philosophical - does TSS have any value at all?

There was a poll that was posted, 47% did not have problems with their stock set-up, 24% did have TSS problems with stock set-up (https://www.tundras.com/threads/poll-2018-tss-radar-precollision-problems.30411/#post-794504). Sure, the poll isn't exactly scientific but seems like you do have a good chance of having a TSS problem and there's no good fix right now when it does happen.

So, is it really "worth it" if i'm looking at buying a 2018 or newer Tundra? Is it really making the truck safer to drive? Should I be looking at pre-2018 Tundras just to get away from potential TSS issues that might arise?

I think the value of TSS is: lane departure and pre-collision warning/braking ... is that correct or is there way more value to the system? I'm getting the impression a lot of folks are not impressed with the whole TSS offering to begin with.

Lol every time this is brought up I keep thinking it's the TSS Off-Road package and not Toyota Safety Sense.

Totally worth it. Every time it saves you from a potential accident, you save $1,000 deductible and lots of headace. You might not even know that something bad was going to happen, but the possibility is there. I have had times where the flashing light or beeper got my attention. That does not mean that I would not have seen the other car anyway without the system, but who knows.

love mine in my Camry but then it's my commuter car. saved my bacon couple times already. Now on a heavily modified car or truck, probably not as you already changed too many variables.

the pre-collision warning works great here in L.A traffic (stop and go and dumb asses cutting from the carpool lane back to heavy traffic)

The biggest value to me is the radar-set cruise control. It’s amazing on road trips. Just got back from a 2000 mile road trip and used the radar cruise control for a good 75% of it. It’s awesome.

The early beeping has been a little aggressive for my taste but it has helped me more alert and did help with learning the stopping distance with LT tires compared to my previous Tacoma.

Overall, I only see it as a benefit. If it were an option on a vehicle rather than standard, I doubt I would have selected it, so I’m glad it’s standard.

Lane departure I hate though, so I’m glad you can turn off.

It was the main reason I went with a 2018. I wanted those features. I would rather drive a car with radar cruise control and pre collision warning than without. Lane departure is handy to make sure you stay awake during late night driving.

I think this is more of a personal preference, me personally pre-TSS all the way. I understand why its there and eventually every truck out there will have it so that will be a shame in my viewpoint. Just get a pre2018 and drive the truck, I think an argument could be made that all these preventative nannies could possibly make people worse drivers.

Again personal preference some see value in it and some don't...go with what you like all we are able to offer is our opinions on the matter.

I like the 2018 cluster, and the TSS works great on my lifted truck, so I like it. I had the choice to get a 17 and I waited instead.

Might want to check your numbers there too. 47 vs 24 is 2 to 1, and factoring in the lifted truck numbers it's more like 70% report no issues. There's also no classification of issue, like if they needed a replacement sensor, or just think the PCS coming on once during torrential rain is a failure.

@ninjajay Thanks for checking my math, not my strong suit. Guess what I was thinking, if i spend $50K and still have a 30% chance of having a TSS issue that has no fix, still seems like a big risk to me. But, that might be more my personality and pre-purchase jitters. When i read about the owners having this problem, i just know it would drive me freaking crazy if I spent that amount of cash.

thanks for the comments everyone, in general i agree with almost all of them.

i keep thinking, the TSS system only has to work once for it to pay for itself many times over. I'm currently driving a 2001 Tundra and don't even have a back-up camera or Bluetooth. i'm way behind the safety curve these days. i've had a couple of close calls over the last 12 months that got me really thinking about the need for an upgrade.

plus i have a baby now and i guess that's changed the way i think too. dang, i'm getting old...

It's totally worth it. Makes me feel safer when I need to check something on my phone while my eyes are off the road for a moment.

^sarcasm. I made sure to buy a new 17 before the 18s came out for a reason.

Also, these systems do not always work to save you from a crash. My 16 Tundra got rear ended when I was at a stop light for a full 5 seconds. The pathfinder with automatic emergency braking still hit me at 50 mph. I've also driven rental cars with all yhe other automatic features and have noticed they almost cause crashes in some situations.

Totally worth it. If you tow long distances the adaptive cruise is amazing. Going from a 2008 crewmax to a 2018 with tss, the difference towing and driving on the freeway is night and day.

I'll echo what most are saying, I really enjoy having the TSS on my truck. It has saved my bacon a few times in traffic. Not all nannies are worth it, but if you commute the TSS system is clutch.

I have a question when you have the cruise sensor set a some dummy cuts you off would it back off so quick that someone would hit from the rear?

It’s pretty great. And the 18+ is a better truck. Just due to the led headlight option, new gauge cluster, new grill, and safety features imo. I’m lifted with 35’s and haven’t had any issues with it acting up

If there is enough distance and not a huge speed difference between you and the dummy, it will just slow down, but if it is close it will apply brakes, and it will apply it fairly hard if it calculates that it needs to, so technically yes, you can get rear ended, but that would have happened if you applied the brakes too to avoid the accident. The brake lights come on when it applies the brake for you, so the car behind you can see that 'you' are braking.

I second the radar cruise, great feature. I can set it at max distance behind semi and catch enough draft to pull off 19+mpg doing 75mph between san antonio and houston and back.

Dang...that's awesome. i'm guessing you got the 5.7L and you still managed to get 19+, that's sweet. i'm sure it doesn't happen all the time but still good to know it can be done.

I feel like i'm always going to be getting 12MPG once i get my new 2018/2019 Tundra. I've got the 2001 now (4.6L) and i will get appx 16-17mpg, even around town.

Adaptive cruise is really convenient for long trips. I’m still averaging around 13.5mpg in my 18’ (w/ 3/1 lift and 35’s)

I think I can get around 16mpg straight highway

Not sure why people all of a sudden need an alarm to tell you when an object is close. TSS would provide zero value for me. The radar cruise would be convenient at times but all the safety nonsense? Just pay attention to your surroundings like people have done for thousands of years and you shouldn’t have a problem.

Reminds me of the Ford commercial where the dumbass kid is using a button to back the trailer up. All these new features are gonna turn people into terrible drivers.

Yes, 5.7l 4x4 and only get that kind of mpg on the trip there and back (400+ mi rt), gas station to gas station. I can get 17.5 mpg without any draft by slowing to 65 mph but that is just silly on I-10 :). Once I am back home and driving around town I average 13-14 mpg a tank.
