My tundra went into limp mode today. I hopped in the cab and fired her up and started off to work, noticing a little light flashing that indicated 4lo. Trac control was also off and my check engine light came on. I drove to o'reillys to get the code checked and behold, the secondary air injection pump wasn't working. I did as much research as I could while at work, slowly finding out that this is a common defect on a lot of trucks and SUVs that carry the Toyota emblem and that there have been a few recalls regarding it but not for the year that I purchased and if I wanted to get it fixed it would cost me more than I have to my name since Toyota won't extend the warranty to cover it like they did for the '07- '10 models. What kind of company just blatantly disregards their commitment to the customer and tells them to get the manufacturers defect fixed on their own dime? No respect for the customers hardships that are arising from the problem that was only created because they purchased a vehicle that was supposed to be at the top of the list for quality and customer satisfaction. I sit alone tonight, depressed at the thought of having to find a way to repair my beloved truck, that I've spoke so highly of in the past but will now refer to as a money pit, just tossing my hard earned dollars into it. I will never tell anyone to buy Toyota again, I won't see a tundra and think about how amazing that vehicle is. From this day on I will see the emblem and think only of the lack of commitment to their customers; their fan base, their income. They have no regard for our trials and tribulations at the hands of the dreaded air injection pump, we are only dollar signs to the corporation that is Toyota and I can say that I will never buy Toyota agin. This is my first vehicle and I have learned so much from it, how dealers will lie about the quality and when a problem arises that's only brought on from being manufactured, it's my fault for picking such a terrible company. I hope we can get class action lawsuit to get this corrected, if that's what it takes then I will start it.

Lol ok, so your 5 year old truck has had ONE defect.... yep, time to look at other brands.
Yes our Tundra's are reliable, nothing lasts forever. If you cant afford to fix a problem outside of warranty maybe you should have purchased an extended warranty, or bought a cheaper truck.
    Bye

I purchased an extended warranty but because the secondary air injection pump falls into the category of "emissions" it is not covered on an extended warranty. If you're a vendor for Toyota I sincerely hope you do your homework on what qualifies for extended warranties before you tell someone they're covered and end up getting a bill like the one I'm about to drop on the company that sold me mine. "One defect" is not the case. I put 9,000 miles on it and am now in a truck that isn't even working properly. It's a defect that is known to have been caused by Toyota, which has always resolved their defects with a reimbursement or recall. So why is this not the case? I appreciate the sarcasm, I know it's definitely hard to understand how someone could have such a better grasp on the functions of a company and how they should treat their consumer base. Maybe you should just read the threads and not post on them because your ignorance is showing and it's not pretty. Oh and about the cost of the repair, I was quoted at $4,500, so if you can afford to let that kind of money go, I applaud you, you're very successful. But I only build aircraft, my wage isn't enough to take $4,500 and drop it on a manufacturers defect. If i caused it I would pay it but that's not the case so thank you. Feel free to reply but I think we know that you're not intelligent enough to gather a coherent sentence that can change any opinions.

Sr5, let's step back and reevaluate this. Was your dealership that you bought the truck denying you coverage? If so elevate it to the next level, which would be your regional office, if no help then go to headquarters. One of the main things is bitting ur lip and remain calm, I can imagine your frustration, but you would be amazed how kindness and generosity will play apart. Going with the other guys would be a move you would more than likely regret. Tell them you have babied your truck and that poor design should not be on your wallet. Hope you get it worked out.

I was able to fix the issue myself for around $300. I shouldn't have had to do it, Toyota should have paid for it but I couldn't have my truck out of service waiting for that. I know how you feel. Let me know if you want to do it yourself and I'll get you the Chilton manual procedures for your specific truck.

Edit: Wait, we have the exact same engine. I already have the manuals downloaded.

I read of several instances and have seen pics of the 2nd AIP taken apart, cleaned out. Problem fixed. It's fairly easy to remove. New AIPs are available now too, online. Usually only one of the AIP's gets fowled up. The same one from what I've seen. Sometime there is a valve/s that is part of the AIP system and canget gunked up. That is not so easy to re-solve.

Yep, I had both of those go out on mine about a week apart from each other. The valve is ALOT easier to replace than the pump (for the 4.6L engine). The new air intake tube is supposed to fix future problems so I replaced that as well. It sits right above the front passenger wheel.

Did you take any tear down pics by any chance? If mine ever go I plan on doing it myself. Most of the problems associated with AIP failure is moisture/water exposure over time. Especially if you live in high humidity areas. Definitely a bullshit design on Toyotas' part. (And only CA requires it, yet it's on all Tundra V-8's sold in the 50 states.)

I wish I had taken some pictures but the Chilton Manuals have a lot of pretty good illustrations. Attached is everything you should need. Let me know if you have any questions. Here's a few notes:

    1) The pumps are both mounted on one frame, I only replaced the bad pump but now I wish I would have replaced both when I had the chance. It's not difficult but a little time consuming to get them out.
    2) The valves are super easy to get out but just in an awkward place. Took me over 6 minutes with an open ended box wrench to get it out b/c I could only do 1/8 turns at a time. Again, not difficult just time consuming but I replaced the valve in less than 45 minutes.
    3) I'll post up next the Toyota publications that have the old and the new part numbers, I was able to order everything from Amazon.

These are a little redundant to each other but they have the new part numbers (for ordering) and some good information including VIN numbers associated with the 'recall' (if you want to call it that).

Thanks. That actually very good info. My Tundra won't be "10" until next June, so I don't expect any AIP system failures until after that date. Homers Law. :homer: (I'm not even close to 150K miles.)

If I were you it may be worth the time to go to your local dealer and see if they will do the fix pre-emptively. I haven't looked at the 5.7L manuals but I know it's A LOT more work on the 4.7L to change out the valves.

Wouldn't hurt to ask. I still need to schedule an AT drain & fill sometime this summer.

I called the dealer and spoke with her about what was going on, of course she was oblivious to the AIP problem and she sent me to the service department. I called and spoke to whoever answered and he pulled up my information and told me that I was out of warranty and would be paying all of the repairs out of pocket. I'll have to call back today and will definitely keep going up the ladder until this is repaired. Terrible business. I've been very good at keeping calm and asking them to explain why it is they cannot cover the repairs and all they say is it's out of warranty and not a model covered in the service contract extension ('07-'10). Thank you for the words of encouragement and advice! Hopefully I can get this straightened out, I've just begun to modify my tundra and hate seeing it in such bad condition and definitely do not want to put any more money into it until I know that it's not going to break down on me on my next road trip.

Hope everything works out bro, Toyota knows this is a problem, and any Tundra after 2010 should be covered as well. It's not our fault that it's due to poor design. I'm getting ready to go after them for charcoal canister TSB, which is also poor design. That's a $1800 fix, and I feel they should replace it. Stay tuned

$4500 sounds like the mechanic has his eye on a new Bass Boat. Get a second opinion from another mechanic. I had the same issue with my Chevrolet. The AIP went out because a $20 part failed. It wasn't a matter of cleaning the pump, the pump was melted from exhaust fumes. the repair bill? Well over $600, but nowhere near $4500. When the time came (finally) to replace the Chevy, I looked at the Ford F-150. The tales of broken and blown out spark plugs, along with a few other issues (such as fuel pump failures and coil failures), dampened that enthusiasm. The politics at Dodge turned me off long ago. I looked at Nissan (and Suzuki, a rebranded Nissan), and at Toyota. I went to the Toyota dealer's "Pre-Owned" lot based on a recommendation from my older daughter after she purchased her Toyota and was treated quite well by the salesman. Women are often considered easy marks and have to be very alert. After meeting the salesman and the sales manager, and not feeling like I wanted to disinfect myself afterwards, we agreed on a price and financing (they beat the rate my bank offered) and I signed the paperwork. Will I have trouble with the Tundra? Of course, all mechanical things break. Do I stand a better chance with the Tundra than I would with one of the others? Only time will tell. As has often been said: You pays your money, you takes your chances, and your mileage may vary. Good Luck with the repairs, and seriously, get another estimate.

Keep working with Toyota, print out or have on hand all the AIP fail threads from here and Tundra talk (lots and lots of them) - see if they will take care of it.

All else fails, do a quick search and you will find links to a number of ways/kits to bypass this BS feature. (I actually bought one as insurance)

Thats what I said. It was from the Toyota dealship that I bought my truck from so bascailly they are saying that its going to be done with the best parts and all that but the quote is far too high. The person I talked to about the repair said hes done it quite a few times but its always under warranty so the customer is covered, basically since i'm out of warranty i'm fucked and the AIP is just for emissions so my extended warranty doesn't cover it. I'm most likely going to do the bypass and just keep truckin. Super dissapointed with Toyota and the fact that thay can't stand by their design and fix the flaws.

I would love to have those, i can definitely do the repairs myself. Could you send them to me on here or do you need a personal email? Thank you!

If you have any pictures regard the replacment I would love to see them! I will be getting a bypass kit for the time being and just use it so i don't go into limp mode again but i will be replacing all of the valves and the secondary AIP so this problem wont decrease the value or cause any lasting headache.

Haha thank you. I'll get it figured out soon and keep this thread updated on the results. I wouldn't buy anything from that guy either, kind of came off a little obtuse. I understand that vehicles have a tendacy to breakdown but i think i'm in the right for requesting toyota to cover the costs. It shouldn't be about how much money i can throw at the truck or what price i bought the truck at, its a known defect that needs to be repaired.

This problem is not new. It's been covered on all the Tundra forums for several years. This particular problem should be a very sore point for Toyota. Toyota should IMHO cover all Tundras that have this poor design. The air tube was placed in such a way as to allow "moisture" to basically frack up the AIP's over time. This is one of the few "bad" list items. Just happens to be a very big BS problem for most folks that experience AIP failure. "TOYOTA..............STEP UP AND FIX THE SHIT!!!!!!!!!!! The last thing you need, TOYOTA, is for this issue to be a major topic in all the Tundra forums. OK, I had my say. When I get my 07 AT tranny drain/fill done, I'll ask to see Mr Stevenson if possible (Stevensons Toyota here in CO). When I bought my 4th used truck from Tynan's Nissan (where I bought my 09 Taco and 07 Tundra), I was introduced to Mike Tynan. (gee as in Tynan's Nissan/VW owner.) The Stevensons sell a lot of Toyotas. I wouldn't be too surprised if the powers that be at Stevensons are aware of this problem. Their hands are tied just like all dealers. 10yrs/150000 miles actually isn't that bad. It would be prudent for Toyota to extend the AIP warranty to 2013's. I'm assuming the 3rd gen AIP systems have been fixed. Our Tundras are one the most reliable trucks on the planet. I can't understand why Toyota can't fix "THE OBVIOUS" but capitulate on junk science smart stop.

Hewitt Tech makes bypass Kits. I have a first gen Tundra. The previous owner had the air pump and Valves replaced a few months before I bought it. I know because I did the work. He traded up to a newer tundra, I jumped on his when it got traded. If it happens again, I'll bypass it. Simple. The parts through Toyota are retardedly expensive. Not a bad job on the 4.7/5.7. Just have to pull the intake off, go through the fender liner for the AIP IN the 5.7.

You say this is your first vehicle. Just be glad you haven’t had the displeasure of dealing with other manufacturers and the boatload of problems that come with them. You would get the same response at any dealership just talking with low level people who don’t make decisions.

Go higher and see what happens. If they don’t fix it guess what? It’s not a big deal at all because the SAIP is worthless when it comes to the functionality of the truck. It controls emissions during cold start. Sure it is upsetting that they don’t fix each and every one of these that had the issue but it really isn’t a big deal. Do the bypass and enjoy your truck for another 10 years. Guarantee you in that time it won’t have near as many problems as any of the big 3 would have.

    Good luck!

Toyota wont even cover this issue under the emission warranty so there is nothing you could have done to get this covered. I had this failure on my 2012 Tacoma at 53k miles and was told to go pound sand by the dealer and Toyota Corporate. They wouldn't cover it under my powertrain or emissions warranty, I fought for 3 days and finally gave up and bought parts to fix myself as I couldn't have the truck down any longer.

This is a crap system on Toyotas part, whoever designed it I hope got fired. Toyota knows of the issue and should cover every truck that shows up with the problem without hesitation...that would be taking care of customers. Good luck on getting it fixed or covered by Toyota!
