Front drivers side rattle

03 tundra front end rattle noticable at lower speeds coming only from the driver's side. New tires, wheel bearings, lower control arms, shocks, lower & upper ball joints, steering rack bushings, swaybar bushings. About to give up.

 

Rattle like metal to metal contact? Not on the interior I assume.

 

You sure you don't have a dog leash hanging off the rear bumper Clark?

 

Poor little guy... probably kept up for a mile or two...

 

Hahaha, it's not on the interior. I've looked through all sorts of forums and even replaced the steering rack bushings and sway bar bushings. It literally sounds like my suspension is about to fall off but I know everything is new and replaced.

 

Is your truck lifted at all?

 

When you did the shocks did you get new upper mounts for the springs?

Also how do the control arm bushing look, at 15 years they're probably done for.

 

Yes, bilstein 5100 level shocks that's it. Nothing else. The shock pads has not been replaced.

 

The lower control arms had been replaced.tie rods, upper ball joints, steering rack bushings, sway bar bushings.

 

I look hard at the upper spring mounts and the upper control arm bushings since it sounds like you've replaced everything else.

 

I have a 2000 limited TRD access cab with over 300,00 miles and it does the same thing! I have done the same thing you have but, I didn't replace the spring mounts.my front end pops and makes weird noises also for the last 3 yrs. I realize what the problem is, I just haven't taken the time to repair it. I have even replaced the rack and pinion!

 

It's VERY frustrating! I will be replacing both front strut pads and follow up.

 

Yes. Sounds like a thud for when you hit a dip when the spring dips for a bump and the rattle noise happens while going over very rough surfaces. Like I said, a thud when the front spring decompress rapidly and rattle noise while going over rough surfaces.

Be aware if you try to tackle this job yourself. So, I go online on toyota parts and I thought I had all the parts required. Then I go to the parts dept at the dealer and looked at their computer, it breaks it down further! So my advice is to fork over the cash to let the dealer do the bearing replacements. Only because, my original plan was to pull the axles and let a machine shop remove and install all the required parts but after realizing more and more need to be replaced, I leaned towards letting the dealer to do the job right. Just for a peace of mind.

 

The top two on this parts receipt are related to this topic, ordered and on the way.The rest, both rear wheel bearing replacement by utilizing toyota dealer parts department. The parts manager gave me a huge discount.

 

Another unrelated source of rattle/ annoyance is check the "V8 and the front grill em emblem they rattle too.

 

It definitely fixed the problem. Thank god.

 

Are they just held on with double sided tape or what?

 

Its clipped on to the grill. Now you can just tape it to stop it rattling.

 

Been considering a mesh grill but would like to retain the v8 grill badge. Was hoping it had a screw or two.

 

As an alternative, you can by one of the V8 double sided stickers from Toyota. They run about $30.

Its not the same as the clip on grill type as discussed, but it will do the job.

 

So, what was your issue exactly? You said you realize what the problem is but never mentioned exactly what that was.

2018 Tundra SR5 with Fox 3.0 IFP coilovers with 3” lift and SPC UCAs. I have a bad thud/clunk coming from my front driver side when hitting potholes. I’ve had my shop check torque settings/ tightened all my UCA bolts and greased up the UCA ball joint. We can’t figure out what this noise is coming from. Sucks cause the suspension was awesome until this. Now I hear and feel this thud/clunk every damn time I hit a pothole or small bump in the road. Frustrating.

 

I'm having the same issue with my 2010 trd rw. Front drivers driver's side loud thud Everytime I go over a bump. I'm just gonna bite the bullet and take it to the dealership

 

My stock 4x4 2006 Tundra has been rattling on bumpy roads for the last 70K miles....ever since it had 120K miles on it. First I replaced the front struts, then axle bushing on front diff, then both lower control arms and bushings. I replaced both front axles. I checked the ball joints at least five times, even with the lower control arms off, but never have been able to detect any wear in any of them. I did get the ball joint recall done at about 30K miles. I guess ball joint failures mainly happen to lifted Tundras. My hearing is poor, but it sounds like the right front. I even tightened up the camper shell bolts in case it was bouncing against the bed.

If I jack it up and get under it, I can grab the axles and shake them up and down and they will rattle, if I shake them in and out they rattle a different tune.
I don't know the solution since I replaced both axles and the diff bushing and that didn't help.

 

Yeah, since the problem sounds exactly like mine, it would be great to know what the actual final thank god solution is.

Best I can figure, your solution was the top two items on that parts quote? One was the stabilizer bar bushing, which I've already replaced, which leaves the other one:

Upper Mount - Toyota (48609-0C021)

If that was indeed what fixed the problem, what exactly in that part goes bad? I'm trying to remember when I installed the Bilstein 5100s what's in there - isn't it just a metal plate, then you put a new rubber strut mate in there for cushion? Or is there something else that goes bad that necessitates a new Upper Mount part for $70-$100+?

 

I'll take a WAG and say it was the spring mounts/strut pads.

 

I’ve had a strange squeak from somewhere, I’ve been juicing everything I could think of with triflo to no avail. It’s usually backing out of my uneven driveway or on the trail the other weekend, the whole effing time, sounded like a broken violin. This weekend getting out with momma bear, I shifted my weight just right and about screamed in joy(I haven’t been able to reproduce the sound!!) so I made her go to the rear; said not here, she made her way to the front passenger wheel well.......I wonder if the upper mount is the Bain of my noises!!?

 

Every month or two , I spray my strut caps and my sway bar bushings with white lithium grease and it seems to stop the popping and squeezing. It's a cheap fix that might take 5 minutes. JMO!

 

I have been dealing with the same issue it sounds like for the past month now. 2004 Sequoia 4x4. After going through everything on my front end it seemed like. I think I narrowed it down to the culprit. The upper mount for the springs. Ignored mostly. But when I got underneath the rig I completely compressed the suspension on my jack and tightened the top nut on the spring and shock assembly, and the noise was almost completely gone. Picked it back up, replaced the upper mount. Tightened everything back up and the noise is gone. Thank god.
