I have been looking and lurking for awhile now on here. I've been thinking about trading my tacoma in for a tundra. Nothing wrong with my (paid off) tacoma at all but just looking for something a little bigger especially with kids now and needing more room in the backseat.

I just drove a 14 crewmax this weekend and was in love at first drive! But they just wouldn't budge on the price so now thinking about looking for maybe a 2nd gen crewmax 4wd. My main question besides the look is there any big differences in motor or interior in the 2nd vs. 3rd gens. I know it would be nice to have all the bells and whistles but if I can find a 2nd gen limited would I get around the same truck as a 3rd gen? Would it be worth it to spend the extra for a 2014+?

Pics of my tacoma for viewing pleasure.

Welcome to the site! No difference in power trains between the 2nd and 3rd gens. Only cosmetic changes. I prefer the 3rd gen over the 2nd but maybe I'm a little biased.

Yup, mostly cosmetic. I think the only important change came in '16 with the larger fuel tank. Otherwise it's basically a 20 gallon tank.

    +1.

I myself debated between a new tacoma and used tundra. ended up with the tundra.
It's perfect for my needs: 3 kids, hauling my quad in the bed, going on camping trips with plenty of gear in the bed for the family...etc..oh and the 5.7L V8 :)..yes it sucks gas but I knew it before getting it.

I noticed that the price for new Tudras has gone up since I purchased mine.

2nd gen has 26.4 gal gas tank (light come on with about 5.5 gal remaining in the tank. I think it's same with 3rd gen, except 16s which comes with larger thank (on most trims).

Basically same truck since 2007. Some cosmetic and minor differences. 16s are nice with larger tank and built in brake controller.

Yeah there is no way my quad fits in the bed of my tacoma I know the pain with this for sure. And I did notice when I was test driving the tundra the other day getting on the interstate was NOT an issue with the 5.7 lol. Even the dealer that was riding with me said to me as we were on the getting on the interstate just press that gas and let her stretch her legs a little bit, needless to say I was impressed with the power over my v6.

also, if you ever sell your tacoma, the private party market is much better than selling to a dealer. You can get more $ on craigslist if you sell it yourself. People always look for Tacomas.

Yeah that was another issue I had. They had their so called "appraiser" look at my truck and literally while I was sitting in the dealers office I heard 2 people (customers) comment about my tacoma that was parked up front and how good it looked. Well he come back to me with a $13,000 offer and told me that was a helluvah deal, I just grabbed my keys and left knowing I wasn't going to get near what I wanted. But I guess that's to be expected when trading in anything to a dealer.

yes, post it on CL. I bet you will get couple Gs more for sure. Also look for used 2nd gen tundras there. They are cheaper than the new gen ones.

Welcome! Exterior cosmetic and interior upgrades on the 3rd gen ones. (14+)
As noted above, 16+ have the larger fuel tank options.

Check out my build thread or other 3rd gen builds if you want an idea of the changes.

I owned 2 Tacos as well and converted to the Tundra for the same reasons you're thinking of. Tacos are awesome bachelor mobiles but getting my ever growing family in one was getting harder and harder. Plus, the 3rd gen taco is not impressing me so far.

I like the interior cloth seats on the 3rd gen better than the 2nd gen, the material to me is better. I prefer the looks of the 3rd gen over the 2nd gen.

16's also have the integrated trailer brake system in the dash. I like the 3rd gens exterior and interior better myself and the gas tank is awesome.

Most dealers will price match, if can you wait until rebates show up. I was able to shave over 5k off mine by showing them another dealers internet ad. You're Tacoma looks nice! Here, private buyers are willing to spend a couple extra thousand more for a used Tacoma than what the BK has listed. That body, 130k, not as clean or without the extras could go over $22k easily on CL.

I hear ya. I wanted to get a new truck with all the bells and whistles, but I wound up getting a slightly used 2013 5.7L and have been extremely happy with her. It was about $10,000 cheaper than new and I had enough left over to do a few mods!

Go for it, you won't be disappointed either way (2nd or 3rd gen).

Also, I have a double cab and it fits 3 car seats comfortably and it means an extra foot of space in the bed (6.5') with adequate leg room but I'd say stick with the crew max unless bed space is a necessity.

For what's its worth, I went through the same think this week and ended up with a 2016 Platinum 4x4 Crew Cab. I had a 2006 Tacoma TRD Offroad double cab with 110k miles on it. It was in good shape, but I think your Tacoma looks even nicer and has more features on it. The dealer gave me more than $16k trade in on my Tacoma and sold me the Tundra for invoice. Other dealers only offered me $11 or $13k for my Tacoma, you just have to find the motivated dealer. My trick is to email every dealer within 50 miles and start playing them off each other.

My dealer couldn't wait to get theirs hands on my Tacoma as they knew they were going to turn it quickly.

The Tundra is very different than the Tacoma and much larger, but I like it a lot and have plans to make many upgrades. If you need the room in the cab, the Tundra is the way to go.

Damn good info man! I appreciate everyone's advice that has responded. Got a 2014 silver and a 2013 white crewmaxs I hope to go look at this weekend if I can get away from work. If all else fails I'll spend next week looking and driving.

That's a good looking Tacoma OP. If it were me I would try to sell the Tacoma outright, you'll come out much better than trading it in. When I started looking for a Tundra my only requirement was a DC cause I wanted a 6.5 bed instead of the 5.5 the CM comes with. I went to every dealer from VA beach to northern VA with no luck whatsoever. I ended up signing up to TrueCar because of the recommendation of several folks on here. I ended up getting. 2016 Limited DC with the TRD package for 39.5 in the color I wanted. Granted mine was a demo with right at 5K on the clock. Patience was the key for me my search was about 4-5 months altogether.

To me the price is a little high. $35K for a truck that has 77,000 miles seems steep. Just for reference, I paid $35K for my SR5 crewmax brand new. That truck is a limited so there will be a difference but I wouldn't think that much.

    Nice truck though!

Toyota trucks hold their value but doesn't mean you have to pay it. I bought my CM 15 with TRD package for 42.2k new.

Invoice on a 2016 Crew Cab 4x4 limited is $41,500. Is a 2 year old truck with 77k miles on it worth the $6,500 difference? That depends on you. For me I would buy new, especially if you are financing as Toyota has very low rates right now. I financed mine for 3 years at 0.0% APR. New cars always have lower finance rates.

Yeah I wasn't to keen on the price especially with the mileage. Honestly I haven't looked at brand new ones I was just trying to keep the price in the 30's if I could. If I can find a crewmax 4wd in the 30's of course I would consider. Maybe I will try the local dealer this weekend and try a new 16' out.

Just curious what some of you got your 16's for? The way it's looking right now after looking at 2 of our local dealers, they have plenty of stock on 16' crewmax 4x4 in whatever color I wish. I'm sure there is more wiggle room on prices of newer trucks over used also. What would you guys suggest for a good negotiable price?

When I purchased mine 3 weeks ago, they didn't even have the truck I wanted on the lot. Even then, they sold it to me at invoice and brought it in later that week. Just look on Edmunds.com for the invoice price and make that your goal. If you look at Tundra sales the last couple of months, they have been below expectations, so they have inventory to move.

I have both a 2nd and 3rd gen. I like the interior of the 3rd gen better, but I like the exterior of the 2nd better. You wont miss with either IMHO. Low mileage tundra's seem to hold there value forever.

I've had 2015 and the new 2016 Tacoma, I traded for a 2017 Tundra and have never looked back. I liked the Tacoma, i LOVE the Tundra. I would recommend the 3rd gen Tundra.
