Finally got my new wheels put on and I love the look. However, when I left discount tire, the truck had a steering wheel shake from 50-70 but really bad around 65. The tires are the same that came off the factory wheel. Truck only has 3500 miles. I took it back today and they spent over an hour getting it balanced. Said it was good to go. Took it for a drive and it was minimally better. Called them back and asked what now and they said they didn't know. I asked about the wheel warranty and they started crawfishing. I just spent a grand on wheels and my steering wheels shakes like it has Parkinson's. What do y'all think? They are XD's. I specifically bought a name brand wheel from a local store just in case there was a problem.

If the only change was the wheels, one or more has to be warped. I’ve had it happen to me with Moto Metal wheels. Even name brand stuff can has defects. Go back and tell them you want to watch them put each one on the balance machine and look for the one that’s way off. Or look for the one that has a lot of weights on it.

Ask em, if not, try Firestone, are you lifted? Maybe need carrier bearing spacers? Possibly defects in tires?

The problem is they are lug centric wheels and Toyota trucks and SUVs are hub centric. For around 35.00, you can buy a set of hub centric rings and that will fix it. I had the same issue with my 4runner when I installed Enkei wheels. Enkei are lug centric as are most aftermarket wheels. You have to buy the correct rings though. You can look up the hub size of the truck, which I think is 110mm and then find the hub diameter of the wheel. Then you buy rings that fit both the truck and the wheel at the same time. You remove the wheel, install the ring on the hub or into the wheel and reinstall the wheel.

Yes they will. Some discount tire stores sell the rings, but...you have to buy the correct sized rings and the easiest is online. They make the rings in either plastic or metal. I purchased plastic ones for my 4runner and haven't had any problem with them. The biggest thing is when you have it serviced, you need to tell them it has rings on it so the tire installers won't lose them or not pay attention. You would be surprised how many tire places don't know what they are.

I would try loosening each wheel and hand tightening the lugs. In a star pattern of course. I usually get them all snug then torque them down tight. Those guys with their impact guns can misseat lug centric wheels.

If that doesn’t work, swap a front and a rear, one side at a time to try to isolate which wheel is the problem. Shaking at the steering wheel is usually a problem with the front tire. If the shaking goes away, you know which wheel is the problem. Then figure out if it’s a balancing problem or a bad wheel.

If that doesn’t work, road force balance.

I have XD Monster 2 wheels and they are HUB centric. Don’t assume those wheels are lug centric for the Tundra.

Nice looking truck. Those look like the XD Hoss wheels and if I'm not mistaken, those are lug centric and should be mounted in a cross pattern system so the wheel centers itself on the hub.

Also did discount tire use the correct lug nuts? They should be ET lug nuts to grab more bite and used on deep channel holes.

I just installed those same wheels and new tires on my truck yesterday and haven't experienced any crazy vibrations yet but I might just get the rings to boot.

You just need to road force balance it then it should be fine. Take it to a well known shop that works on bigger tires. Tires plus Firestone dont really know how to balance big aggressive tires.

According to discount tire, the wheels are hub centric. I'm going to take it to Toyota Monday and have them road force balance them. It's going to cost me a $100 but hopefully that will fix it.

Discount tire is wrong. Those are not hub centric but the road force balance will help.

I have learned not all Discount Tire stores have Road Force balance machines, the rings will help a lot too.

I never even knew about hub centric and lug centric. Thanks for the info.

Doubt this is your solution but just to share. 65 mhs or so i had steering wheel vibration. Got my tires rebalanced (wasnt able to find a place that did road forced). Slightly helped.

I couldnt remember if it was always like that cause for a good while i hadnt been on the highway. Either way i did remember lowering my tire pressure back to around factory specs.
So i upped my pressure to around the 38-40 psi (cold). That has given me a significant improvement.

    You never know.

Like I said, my XD Monsters are hub centric. Yours may be as well and it is easy to verify. If the wheels slide on the hub without gaps (where the ring would fill the void) they are hub centric.
Check it for yourself. Good luck!

I called kmc today and was surprised to get a live person on Saturday. He verified my wheels are hubcentric and that rings wont help. He thinks one wheel may be bad and said they will stand behind the wheels if any need to be replaced. He didn't think a roadforce balance will fix the problem but I may still do it to help narrow down the problem wheel. Not real sure what to do. I work a lot and am also on call on a lot so spending hours on end at discount tire isn't a great option.

Do you have a good jack and set of stands? If you're comfortable doing it, take Joonbug's suggestion and swap one of the front wheels to the back. Drive around and see if bbn it improves things, if so you know it's on the back now and if not it's likely the one up front that you didn't swap.

I would also pay attention to the weights. If they went super heavy on a wheel then either the tire should have been spun around the wheel or they were fighting a defect.

I would do all of this myself before dropping another $100 on potential disappoint at Toyota. If Toyota isnt able to balance it they'll just say it's not OEM wheels and thanks for the cash.

I hae 1400 miles on my truck, when I test drove it there was a wobble in the steering wheel that I should have walked away from. Dealer installed these XD wheels. Told sales guy to take the wheels off and put the steel wheels back on, I wasn't bying wheels. Long story short, they balanced the wheels again and the wobble was gone when I picked it up. But I did notice some wobble on my road trip to Jacksonville last week.
So glad I read this thread, I'm going to take it to get Road Forced Balanced.
    Thanks All!

I dont really have the stuff to do that, but I'm thinking I may swap one wheel at a time with my spare and see what it does.

My last truck they had to break down the tire from the wheel and spin it 90 to 180 degrees and reinflate to get it to balance.

Update on the issue. Vibration is gone. Turned out to be a bad tire. Took it to Toyota and had it roadforce balanced. Helped maybe a little. Guy said there were 2 wheels that he couldn't get perfect so he put on the back. Called a different discount tire that had a roadforce and requested the tap on weights that go on the edge of the inside wheel. He put them on his roadforce machine and said without a doubt, I had a bad tire. He guaranteed it. So I opted for a set of cooper ATP tires instead of just buying 1 Michelin. I never was crazy about the look of the Michelins anyways. So after countless hours in waiting rooms and endless frustration, its finally fixed. Apparently the factory wheel can still be balanced with a bad tire but the aftermarket wheel couldn't. Probably because if wheel weight location. Outside lip vs inside stick ons. Thanks for all the suggestions.
