After a long wait and many different plans, I am finally able to start my garage/ workshop. I have been wanting a place to store and work on my truck for longer than I have been driving.
I started last fall by striping off the top soil/ organic material and got the base gravel in and packed.
    KIMG0397.jpg
I was able to get some concrete forms given to me. Only need to make about 20 feet more.
    KIMG0396.jpg

Next came the 3/4" stone. Need to coat the entire base with 6". So far I have been lucky and have been able to barter the topsoil for the gravel and the 3/4" stone.
    KIMG0398.jpg
Before the 3/4" stone went in I set the floor drains, sink drain and conduits for heat, electrical and water into the building.
    KIMG0410.jpg KIMG0411.jpg KIMG0412.jpg KIMG0413.jpg
Had to get some more 3/4" stone. This is by far the fastest/ easiest way to put stone in.
    KIMG0414.jpg KIMG0415.jpg

Forms are in place. Next step is vapour barrier, insulation, rebar, 6x6 mesh and pex.
    KIMG0416.jpg KIMG0417.jpg
Got all the rigid insulation for under the slab and the exterior perimeter/ wing.
    KIMG0418.jpg

More to follow. Unfortunately have to head to work to pay for all of this. Hopefully can pick up some overtime or cash jobs.

Two bays at the front for vehicles will be unheated. Rear bay will be heated and have running water/ sink and possible a toilet. I have run all the plumbing, just will have to wait to get it hooked into septic.
I am also framing the roof to include a full length loft. It is about 1/3 cheaper than buying trusses.

Maybe down the road, ceiling height for the heated side is going to be 12'.

lookin' real nice. I work in the construction industry so there's some pretty neat ways of heating a space you may want to consider. Also, I assume you're going to want hot water, you could save a lot of space and plumbing by just putting in a small tankless heater.

I am running infloor heating as I have piping left over from my house. I heat with an outdoor fired wood boiler so I can do the garage and the house. For shop hot water I will be using a plate exchanger. There is no reserve but virtually unlimited hot water from the boiler.

The farm has a total of 400 acres. My mother and brother also have houses on it but they are about half mile down the road.

Sorry for the delay in getting pics/ updates. Finally finished the hay fields so now I can work more on the garage. Here are some recent pics of the build.

The steel beam arrived yesterday for the rear bay.

Unfortunately, the company sent a 10" beam instead of a 12" beam. Now have to wait until next week.
The rest of the TGI's, LVL's and subfloor coming on Monday. Maybe I can get the rafter pattern cut while I wait.

    Build is looking great!

I have a steel beam spanning my garage also. Builder didn't see it until after he quoted the house. He wasn't too happy about spending $990 on the beam and then the crane to lift it in place. Can't wait to see it put in place.

Only reason I am going with steel over the workshop/ heated bay is so I can hoist off the beam, I already have the trolley and the hoist.
