Blown Axles Seal

So I'm trying really hard to understand this inner axle seal. What are they talking about?

 

Exactly. This is a semi-floating axle. The design hasn't changed much over the years.

I was going to comment on this at around 4pm today, just got wrapped up in other stuff. Sorry about that.

So to add a little:

Seals wear out, and with over 120K miles...maybe. Sometimes stuff just happens.

Things to look out for:
-If you run over on payload and tow a lot of weight, the bearing and race could be going south. I would change these out anyway while the axle is out. A simple press or NAPA can do this. I have changed a few in my days.
-Look at your axle shaft for damage. This will continue to happen in the event the tech doesn't notice any issue where the bearing is pressed on. This is where the differences between a semi-floating axle and full floating axle really stand out between one another. On semi-floating axles, the weight is riding on the axle/bearing assembly that is pressed on. The full floating axle weight is all on the bearing hub assembly. Another reason I'm not for running over on payload. It will catch up to you (not saying this is your particular issue or accusing you of running overweight). When people need new spring packs/ over load springs/ airbags...a beer or two should be had and really think about what's going on.

 

They're going to change your wallet weight. There is no inner axle seal. Your just getting charged twice for a job that should have been fixed the first time. This new quote is probably for new bearing/race this time.

I could be wrong, and I would like for the dealership to prove me wrong.

I would sure be asking questions as well, and if anything but a credit to this repair bill isn't offered, a private mechanic or yourself should do this work.

I would do a couple things:

1) get your paperwork from the 400.00 you spent, parts list, etc.
2) Print out the diagram on the link I shared in post #9.
3) Ask what they are going to do differently. I would be asking for a credit since the work done obviously didn't work. I believe when using the dealership and factory parts, there is a warranty on parts for 12 months.
4) Have a backup plan for using another repair shop or yourself on Friday. In fact, I would be calling tomorrow to iron out this crap.

I would also remind them you paid to have a service done, and it wasn't fixed. Period. I would also remind them that you visit this dealership every 3-4 weeks....

Older tundras and tacomas had the inner seal but it looks like the 2016 Tundras only have one seal based on the chart posted by ColoradoTJ

 

You wouldn't happen to have a diagram of that do you? If you don't have one up on another browser right now, I can look it up.

Item #4 below is the Hub & Bearing Seal

 

I did rear rebuild on my 84 pickup and there was an inner seal from what i remember. I almost fd it up putting the axle back it as you have to be steady and keep the axle straight till you can bolt it up.

Nothing has changed on these axles. The same diagram is for the 16' as well.

Why would a mechanic change the axle shaft seal and not the axle housing seal while the axle shaft is removed? That is retarded and wonder if this is what is considered the "inner" axle seal?

 

Yes that is my guess. I didnt know the terminology but thought there was one in axle housing and would have considered that the inner seal myself

Ok the diagram shown in the link doesnt show all of the rear components. It shows the axle housing seal and not the axle shaft seal.

 

So @BOBONTUESDAY, this should be interesting. Brian is right.

This looks like an issue with swapping out the Axle shaft seal or "outer" seal, and not changing the axle housing seal or "inner" axle seal. For the life of me, I have no idea why the mechanic didn't change the "inner" axle housing seal first. This would be the first one to swap, since it's the one to stop gear lube from coming out of the axle housing.

Now this is where to pay attention. If in fact they did swap out the inner seal and not the axle shaft seal, your bearings could be going south.

If the dealership did only change out the axle shaft seal (which is retarded, no wonder your puking gear lube everywhere).
