Hi folks, new member here from the Cariboo Region in BC, Canada!
    (Green Lake)

    Regarding dedicated snow tires...
Just wondering if anyone has some review or experience with the new Nokian R3 “Hakkapeliitta” on their Tundra?

Wife has the older R2 version on her car, and they’re fantastic: but I wonder if the newer R3 will be as good on a truck?

    Many thanks for your input!

I am unfamiliar with your tire brand. Hopefully someone else will chime in to help you out.

Those are some bad ass snow tires. My co-worker has them in her truck.

Those tires are beauty. My brother runs them on his Subaru and loves them. I don't think you'll find much better.

You won't regret it. If I had the cash I'd run dedicated snows, in happy with my Michelin defenders in the winter here so far.
You getting separate winter wheels as well? Seems to make the most sense, unless the tire shop offers free change overs for the lifetime of the tires. And they are gentle on your wheels

I run the R2 on my suv and Blizzacks on the Tundra.

Blizzacks are softer and grip better on icy roads. R2 handles dry winter roads better but are still a great winter tire. It’s just trade-offs.

The Tundra gets driven mostly around town, so the softness of the Blizzacks isn’t much of an issue, and the better grip on ice is appreciated.

We use the suv more on highways and longer trips where we drive on bare but cold roads, so the R2 delivers better driving manners in that situation.

However, I would not hesitate to recommend either.

Not going studded, as I put on a lot of miles out of the snow zone and onto bare pavement... at least until I retire next year!

You sir, are in business. You'll own the roads this winter!

One recommendation would be to maybe go with a pizza cutter, aka tall skinny tire. Even from the standard 275 width down to 265 but same height or taller, like a 33". Idk if that's affordable or not as far as those tires.

I went from 265 up to 275 then finally down to 255 on my old Tacoma and the 255 were much better in the winter, and really better all around actually.

Hmm. Planning a drive up the Matterhorn so studded it is I guess. Lol.

They do a shit job of plowing our streets so we end up with lots of compact snow and ice. I think I'll opt for studded.

Lol. In Saskatchewan you see lots of snow plow trucks when there’s no snow on the highway. Lol. When the road is covered in snow there isn’t one in sight

Yes and I find blizzaks wear out faster than nokians and loose their traction.

Very quick. I got them used at a good price. I won’t make that mistake again.

We might just start looking for a awd Lexus soon.

I’ve run studded Mastercraft courser msr’s on 3 vehicles and they have definitely impressed me. Eats through the deep stuff, like 18”, and plenty of grip on ice.

Blizzaks are great on ice and hard pack, the deep stuff gives them some issue.

Haven’t driven on Nokians but I’ve heard amazing things.

Be careful if you ever have to push a stuck vehicle with studded tires. I have run them in WV. Great on ice and packed snow. Have heard of studs flying out when someone spins tires trying to get unstuck. WV tried to ban them but miners threatened to strike if they did.

About the same around here. They get out a couple days after the storm. Just in time to make sure the snow on the roads is well packed down and the intersections are properly iced over.

Currently having the same discussion... Costco has the Bridgestone for under 1k and a $70 gift card... the Nokian are $300 each at Cal Tire. I've had the bridgestone on all my vehicles and have been really happy.

I went for the R2's, and either they have amazing grip or last winter wasn't bad in the Edmonton/Calgary area.

Ever check out motomaster light truck WT? On my 3rd set. If u can handle dealing with Canadian tire staff, they are worth it. Think I paid $1200 studded and installed for 18” tundra wheels.
