I ran with 85 on my way to my property. 25 cents cheaper than 87. 95% highway driving. I use 87 most of the time. 85 will not kill my engine. Not losing sleep over this at all. Never buy hi octane unless u have a S/C. Otherwise you are pissing away your money.

Prior to the S/C I always ran mid grade shell and shell only. Some will say it's pointless, but I believe if you treat your engine good, it'll treat you good.

Let me condense this thread to its inevitable conclusion. Some will swear higher octane is a waste of money. Some will swear it makes their truck more better. No one will prove anything. ready begin :)

Beginning: What If The right Octane Isn’t Available?
[IMG]In some high-altitude areas, you’ll find 86 or even 85 octane gasoline sold as “regular” grade. At higher altitudes, the thinner air compensates for the gasoline’s lower octane, so the engine can usually run without detonation. If you are staying in the area, you can generally use the same level of gasoline you would at lower altitudes, i.e. regular, mid-grade or premium. If you will be traveling out of the high-altitude area, go by the numbers and use the same octane you would at lower altitudes. Note that most automaker suggests sticking to the recommended octane rating, even at high altitude.

This is why I'm not too concerned about running 85 occasionally. Not sure how 93 can give more "pep". 93 is most likely a waste of hard earned money. This may help :

Beginning: No junk science. High octane will not give you more pep. If your engine is programmed to run most efficiently on 87 it will not have more "pep" with 93. Easy to prove, after all it's only science. What a concept. Once again , NO JUNK SCIENCE. I'm not even going to waste my time explaining something so simple.

Oh wait, I think I'll blow $100 on a throttle body spacer to get more "pep". Oh , I can upgrade to 93 and really kick ass.

85 will do nothing to today's engine. the ecm can do the math accordingly to keep detonation out (why you have knock sensors).

If running a s/c (blower) and the recommended is 93 but all you can get is 91 tho the ecm can do the math on it tho you need to lighten up on the fuel pedal and no wide open runs you will do fine.

    This was from a tuner:

"At elevation, 85 is the equivalent of 87 for old vehicles only; vehicles that had ignition timing that was fixed relative to vacuum, not air density. Any vehicle from roughly 1990 and newer automatically takes air density (elevation) into account with ignition timing calculation and adjusts automatically. 85 octane should not be sold any longer, as it does cause pinging on newer vehicles, yours included, as your log file showed it pinging 27 times during that 25 minute log file. Of those 27 detonation events, at least 10 were considered to be severe based on the level of corrective action the PCM had to take to end it.

At lower air densities, the air/fuel mixture burns more slowly and increased ignition timing is needed to start the burn earlier so that peak cylinder pressure is achieved at the appropriate time. Without the ability to alter timing for elevation (think Carburated/vacuum advance distributor days), the only way to speed up the fuel burn to maintain that appropriate point was to reduce the octane rating of the fuel, which is what they did. Fast forward to now and we'll look at your engine. At full throttle, it sees 100kPa of pressure at sea level and wants about 24-26 degrees of ignition advance to burn appropriately. Drive up to 5000' and you're down to about 80kPa of air pressure. An old engine would still have that 24-26 degrees of timing, but your PCM is smarter than that and automatically increases the timing to 28-30 degrees as needed.

To sum it all up, as stated in the form, you *can* run 85 octane, but it will continue to ping. 87 is the lowest octane that it can be efficiently tuned for, and it is even tuned for that fuel from the factory. I expect that you'll find that the owner's manual states a requirement of 87 octane and doesn't allow for octane adjustment by elevation."

Have you noticed that most V-6,8 cars and trucks now require 87. 87 used to be around 10cents higher on average and premium another 20cents give or take. Most older car/trucks run on 85. They will eventually disappear for the most part. Why is Mid grade (87) 25 to 30 cents higher than 85 now instead of historically 10 cents or so???? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm... profit margins??..... since most new cars require 87?? I especially love subsidizing E fuels because they are so efficient. Time to convert to N gas??

100kPa is roughly 14.5 pounds/foot. 80kPa is roughly 11.6 pounds/ft. (ft/lbs is no longer an SI unit internationally for measurement terms. Pascals/Pa and Newtons/Nt) Not a big difference at all from a calibration comparison viewpoint which is my vocation/life for the last 37 years. 85 may not necessarily ping at all. I rarely ever run 85 and I've never had pinging when I did. As @Mike said the ECM in our Tundras' can easily compensate for the difference. I can find all kinds of pro's/con's online. I prefer my No Junk Science Methodology. Facts trump truth. Is running 85 efficient, no. Of course running 87 is most efficient. Doesn't mean you will get any pinging just because you run 85 occasionally. (and for me usually mixed in with 1/2 tank or more of 87. I rarely let my tank get below 1/2. I always top it off at 1/2. (A residual affect from driving to Alaska thru Yukon where gas was scarce at times.) I'll never run out of gas. Not going to lose sleep over this at all. (Like @Sean266 , buy Shell when you can...)

From a tuners aspect, not sure how relevant kPa is compared to bar or whatever they use now. What measurement do you think they use now Matt? Inquiring minds want to know.

    http://www.megamanual.com/begintuning.htm

I don't personally think running 85 octane fuel will hurt the motor with current fuel injection systems (like you stated) either. I do run 87 octane (98% of the time) and will continue to do so. In my recent 1900 mile trip, my worst tank of fuel mileage was on 85 octane fuel. Can't explain why, but that is what happens when I drop down octane ratings when towing.

One of the people here at work has been driving his SC Nissan for 175000 miles on 85 octane fuel and hasn't had an issue yet. Maybe I am wasting my money and when I do test with lower octane fuel it is just a coincidence that my fuel economy dives pretty good.

I may have to test this out again just using 85 on a whole trip.

No kidding right? Hell, the only place in Colorado Springs, CO that has non-ethanol fuel is Chief Petroleum....and it is expensive. I run this in my chainsaws.

As of May 17th, 3.19 per gallon.

I put 91 E-0 in my motorbike today at the Twin Lakes station without really looking at the price. All my cash, $3.78/gal. Crazy.

Glad you had a good ride today. We used to go to Holy Cross city every July 4th. That is an amazing area.

My local Sam's had pure 91available for a short time. Never got it. It's all ethanol "fortified" gas now at Sam's for the last several years. It's hard to find any pure dino around here anymore.

This is what we have to use for the International System of Units (SI unit). NVLAP allows us to use psi and ft/lbs for example. We, as in USA, haven't gone total metric yet. It will happen eventually. Has to.

    Too crowded these days.

That'd be the place to go on those 90*F+ days...
