I am pretty sure everyone is unhappy with the rear seat changes Toyota made with the 14' Crew Max. Coming from a Double Cab Tacoma I was fairly confident that my new bigger truck would be able to hold and carry much more than ever. While the rear seat passengers do have a ton of room, I don't have anywhere to store my jumper cables, tow straps, tow hooks, flares, and whatever other random items I was able to store under AND behind the seats of my Tacoma.

The best solution I have found is the Undercover Swing Case SC-400D or SC-400P. I know it isn't a resolution 100% because I can't keep the items in the cab of the truck. Now they are exposed to the outside temps, and I lost a small amount of bed space. I will say however, that the Tundra has enough bed space for me, and the great design of the Swing Case keeps it out of the way, and it takes seconds to remove/install.

The installation of the swing case was cake, but I took a few pictures during the install so I figured I would do a thread on it, just to show anyone who is worried about install how easy it really is. I did run into one surprise, I had to remove the cargo hook in the back and the bed wasn't painted under the cargo hook, so I had to put two quick coats of rattle can on the bare spots. Also, I didn't have a Torx T40, so I had to run out to get one.

DISCLAIMER: I know this is common sense, but I don't work for Undercover. These are the steps I took, but you should follow the directions and take proper safety precautions.

    Tools needed:
-Torx T40 - To remove rear cargo hook
-11mm Socket - To secure the bracket bolts to the bed
-Various drill bits to make holes in the bed for the bracket bolts. I started with a small hole and worked my way up to a hole just smaller than the bolt, which is sort of self tapping.

    Supplies needed:
-Your choice of primer/paint if you don't want to leave the bare metal of the bed exposed. I used Krylon Fusion, Black Satin. You won't see it unless you remove the bracket and don't replace the cargo hook.
-Something or someone to hold the bracket in place, I used blue masking tape.
-Newspaper or something to prevent overspray
-Blue masking tape to tape off around bare metal area

Step 1: Remove rear cargo hook of whatever side you are mounting the swing case. Torx T40
Step 2: Tape off and put some type of overspray protection (newspaper, etc.) around the bare metal spots where the hook was to paint it.
    IMG_20140410_125422_660.jpg
    Step 3: Paint bare spots.
    Step 4: Remove tape/overspray protection.
    IMG_20140410_131631_547.jpg
Step 5: Place the bracket in the rear corner like in the picture, with it as flush to the floor and bed as possible.
    IMG_20140410_132009_397.jpg
Step 6: Hold the bracket steady with something, drill your holes, and thread in the six provided bolts in the six holes in the bracket. I didn't tighten them very much, especially the lower bolt on the "arm" near the wheel well. There is a small gap, they probably should have included some type of spacer. I plan to find something to put in the gap when I have the time.
    IMG_20140410_135427_816.jpg

Step 7: Put the swing case on the bracket, pull the lever, and slowly close it to latch. Mine closed/opened just right out of the box, but if you have to make adjustments you can make them on the latch.

Step 8: Clean the metal shavings out of your bed from drilling.

So far I am very pleased with the Swing Case. Once I put some things it in I will post a picture of the inside of it.

Also you are able to lock it to the truck with a padlock, and the Swing Case comes with two keys for the lockable top.

Not the install thread of the century, but maybe it can help someone.

Looks like it will hold all the tie downs you would need. I like the efficient use of storage.

That's pretty cool. I finally see one install. I looked at them but felt a little hesitant.

I hadn't seen one in person so I was a little suspect of the quality and functionality, but I am impressed with it for how I intend to use it.

Looks good this is definately on my list. Does it feel pretty sturdy? I was mostly afraid of it bouncing around wonce you put some weight in there.

That looks very nice, good work on that. I was looking into buying one of these as well but may go with a slim truck box instead, maybe. Does it rattle or look like it will do so over time?

It feels sturdy, but I didn't put anything in it yet. I haven't been driving the truck much lately, and haven't had time to even load it up yet. It seems like it would hold weight well. I think the weight limit is 50lbs. I probably won't have that much weight in there, but it looks like it could hold 50lbs no problem. I just added some pictures of the inside of it.

Thanks. I haven't put anything in it yet, and only drove about 20 miles with it so far. I was only able to hear a noise from the Swing Case when I had the rear glass rolled down, while going slow, hitting bumps. What I heard was the latch making a little noise.

I went back there to try to duplicate it and this is my conclusion. After the swing case closes if you push on it hard, you can feel a little movement in the latch, which is probably a spring to stop the box smoothly in case it gets slammed shut. I think that is what the noise is. It didn't annoy me and I don't anticipate the noise being an issue. If it does get louder when I load it up or if it becomes a problem I will post it on here.

No, so far I haven't had a situation where I needed it, though I have needed the passenger side. I used the passenger side hook with a tie down to secure lumber. I was considering picking up another swing case for the passenger side, but it is nice having at least one tie down hook mounted low.

Update: Now I have all the things I wanted to put in the Swing Case. I still have more space and use it occasionally to throw random stuff in. No issues with the case, it's still working fine.

I designed it and the sheet metal company my daughter works for built it. Going to be offering it to the Toyota dealers and anyone who wants them.

That's really nice man... Is there any reason it couldn't be just one long door and space rather than three separate? Love the three door design, just wondering if anything prevents a single open space. Very nice. I'm 100% certain you will sell those. Good job doing what Toyota dropped the ball on.

The rear seats are bolted to rails in the floor like a floor joist in a house. the run up to the front of the seat so you cant do one long opening. I would have rather had it that way so that gun owners could lock up their long guns. At least this way with the optional locks, you can lock up hand guns in there.

MotoTundrs, can you remove the swing case from the bracket once it's mounted? Say to haul a four wheel that may be a little to wide with the case installed?

Absolutely, it will look just like the picture under "Step 6" after you remove the swingcase from the bracket...
Also it is very easy to remove and put back on. Only takes a few seconds, no tools required.

Nice write-up man! I added 2 of these to my DC. (they come in driver or passenger side). They are well built and do not bounce around on rough roads. If I have one nit, It is that if you padlock them to prevent removal, you have to remove the padlock in order to swing them out. Still looking for an alternate solution for that.

RealTrucks stocks them, and they are a great company to work with.

Moto...I have a question for you. Do you think you can trim the mounting bracket about 1" to 1-1/2" to sit them lower? Reason that I am asking, is the Extang Solid Fold or Solid Fold 2.0 does not work with this because of the handle (speed clamp) and the top of the Swing Case hit. I am trying to figure out if the Swing Cases can be a little lower and I can modify the handle from the cover, it may work. Thanks for the help!

Next opportunity I have I will check it out. Unfortunately I don't think you would be able to get it much lower because the release handle and related components are pretty close to the bed if I remember correctly.
I will get back to you.

Yes, changing up the seat takes away quite a bit of storage since I was able to slide the seat up a few inches in my 2010 CM and still have massive room for the people in back. It was great for climate control and keeping tools, gloves, medical supplies, flares, jumper cables, shovel, ax, straps, comealong in a climate controlled area without fear of oxidization, etc. It was also nice because it was out of the way and I never touched it, so there was never a fear of failing to be prepared. I imagine Toyota must of had many complaints to change it.

I do like your solution and considered it, but my only hesitance lies with it taking the place of that nice vertical channel just before the wheel well. In my old 2010, I had a tonneau and bedrug (My Pro is getting it put on tomorrow). I used a 2x6 covered in matching carpet that would slide in/out very easily. It afforded about 20" or so of space across the bed for daily usage in storing groceries, or whatever the need was that particular day I pulled it out for trips, but it worked well as a nice hidden "trunk", where I could just toss something in and didn't have to worry about most items rolling around the bed.

So for me, I considered this and it sure looks nice, but I think it will impact daily usage along with space and takes away from the permanent solution I want. I also saw that under the seat internal storage by ESP I believe which looks awesome, but it's tough for me to justify the price.

Anyway, good job it looks great. I still am trying to work this out and will sit on it a while...

I love that custom box you made. Is your truck a 2014 Tundra? How can I get my hands on one of these? Are you selling them??
