Yep and MPGs are only valid if you stay off throttle and don't spin the turbos. Most people don't have the discipline to do. Where the others shine in MPGs versus Tundra is in traffic and idling. I can get close to 18 on hwy in no traffic at 75 but as soon ad I hit stop and go traffic it falls off quick.

Lol. I'm glad I found this forum. You guys crack me up! Anyway, thanks a bunch for all the good responses. I don't know what I'll do. I've heard the same stuff many people on here said about the RAM. . .reliability and resale. Having checked around on my 08 Tundra with 165k miles, I'm candidly astonished at what I can still get out of it. As to Ford, well, I'll never drive a Ford, anything. I'll just leave it at that. Call it family bias. I owned a Chevy before this, and it was great. But this Tundra has checked all the boxes for me. If there was a redesign, I'd be waiting in line at the dealership, my sweaty fists full of cash. But damn, two years? I use this truck for hauling occasionally, but mostly just as my every day driver. Waiting till it has 200k miles on it to get a new one bums me out. I do have to say, 11 years between legitimate redesigns seems a little extreme. I wish Toyota would hurry up. I'll probably drive the ZR1 when they have one here I like, see if it wows me, and if not, wait until the RAM's been out a year to see what kind of kinks they've worked out. If neither of them blow my hair back, maybe next year this time I'll be ordering my 2020 Tundra.

 

I'd be hesitant about ordering a 1st year all new Ram. I know they had a lot of teething problems with the Grand Cherokee when they changed over body styles back in 2012 or 2013. That being said, you can still buy the old style Dodge Ram brand new right now as well, I'm sure the deals on them are smoking.

Same rule kind of applies to the new GMC/Chevy trucks, but IMO they really didn't change much on them except the sheetmetal. Same V8 engines(except they can now run on 1 or 2 cylinders to trick the EPA test into an improved 1mpg rating!!!!) Interiors are a big disappointment, they are completely different yet look exactly the same as the interior in a 2014 truck.

Girl at work came to me yesterday about her Ram 1500 $2,000 repair bill - hinting towards she wants a bonus to help repair the POS. I told her 2 years ago to buy I Fing Tundra. She didn’t listen. She dumped $1500 into it not even a year ago - has less than 60K mi on it.
No Fing thank you lol.

 

Being a cold climate guy I’ll vouch for the rust comments. Round here 5 year old rams look like they’ve been pulled out of the Atlantic. Rear wheel wells are the most succeptible, with tailgate, doors and rocker panels next. Looks like some 00 buckshot had their way with it. GM’s & fords are about the 10 yr Mark Before they start looking like Rams. 15 yr old tundras still look brand new (body). Minor rust in some spots on bumpers etc.

Just casual observation. Frames I’d imagine are similar, but I’m not getting out when it’s 20 below and crawling under these vehicles at traffic lights.

You do realize you're asking that in a TUNDRA forum. IMO, asking specific questions like this never really answer your question. If you really care about making the right decision and afraid of the wrong decision, you have to do the research yourself across different forums, websites, etc and test drive them for yourself. It's a bit more work than posting a question and letting strangers give their opinions

 

One of my foremen is in a similar situation. He drives a Ram Power Wagon. Actually a nice looking truck, but it is always broken down. He has a lifetime bumper to bumper warranty that he paid $4000 for. Every time it breaks, I tell him he should have bought a Tundra. His reply is that Tundra does not offer a lifetime warranty. The more I explain to him that he doesn't need a lifetime warranty on a Tundra, the more he comes back to how nice it is to have the warranty. He just does not get it. The inconvenience of dealing with the issues is what would get me.

 

I disagree, my 2015 towed great. It was always getting towed. My 2018, work truck, has died on me 3 times already, 5400 miles on it. Dealership doesn’t have a clue why?

 

My niece works in the service dept for a chevy dealer in town so she see's the new trucks coming in for service and she bought a Toyota

 

I'm amazed how many folks come on here and ask for opinions or help with decisions and dont heed what they are asking for.
Do your research, test drive the vehicles, compare them. Read on the other truck forums. You are not making an investment you are throwing money away when you purchase a vehicle. So if you are throwing away money you might as well get the best bang for the buck.

 

Maybe the newer ones are better, but my tundra is waaaaay better than the 2006 gmc 1500 I had with the 5.3l. No hp/tq and crappy brakes.

I just came from a F150 3.5L Ecoboost King Ranch. I had multiple issues with it and I would not recommend that engine to anyone. I traded it in with only 75k miles. It needed new turbos (they were barking/chirping), a new intercooler because of a poor design that traps water, and a new timing chain and phasers (apparently super common under 100k miles). Again, all of this is only at 75k miles. That direct injection motor is extremely dirty and needs new plugs quite often, every 20k to 30k. There is also an inherent shudder on idle that is very annoying. Overall I had issues with the quality of some of the parts that were used. Pretty much all of my window regulators or motors went out over a 3 year span. The other thing is that when you have an issue with your ecoboost, you can do some research online and find a ton of other people with the same problems. Ford would issue TSBs for very major problems and refuse to help people that were out of warranty. That will likely be the first and last Ford that I own. The mileage is nowhere near what is advertised too. When I first bought it, I got 17mpg on the highway coming home and then 14mpg in town. I leveled it and put 35s on it and got 14mpg highway and 11.5mpg in town.

I do feel like I gave up a ton of creature comforts by going to the Tundra. I think Toyota is quite behind in their electronics and features. Can I not get an automatic up AND down window switch for at least the front two windows? Cmon guys!! I have tons of buddies with very high mileage Tundras and this time I placed a higher priority on reliability than features which is what lead me to the Tundra.

I do still miss my Ford because it was a very nice vehicle but I've moved on. This is just my $0.02 based off of my experience. For every story like mine there are plenty of high mileage ecoboost success stories so take it with a grain of salt but please be warned.

 

If I left Toyota.. gmc Duramax would be my go to .I loved my gmc . After about 150k I started having electrical issues... (Known gm issues)

 

And paying $4000!

 

Toyota is behind the big 3 but they have far less issues so it is a trade off reliability or a truck that has more features that sits in the shop? I came from older Chevys and had very little problem but the new one's are not the same

 

Good idea actually if you don't put a ton of miles on your truck. I feel like the Fords, Chevys, Rams, they're good trucks if you trade them in before 6-7 years and 100k miles. After that, I kind of think that as newer vehicles have gotten more complicated, there is a lot more stuff to break, OEM's don't always spec out the best quality parts and stuff is expensive to fix when it does break.

This isn't like your old 80's/90's Ford or Chevy, where you can put a brand new engine in for $1500, rebuild the trans for $1000, all the parts are dirt cheap and can be found at any Pep Boys/O'Riellys and the trucks are easy to work on.

I talked to our fleet manger who is also the workshop manager and certified mechanic about this, just to get his opinion again. Funny:
The company will not buy RAMs anymore, based on reliability concerns which is based on real service records. facts, not bias. We have had mostly Chevies for a long time, but now start to change them out for Fords. (Chevy light duties and Ford heavy duties mostly)
Kicker: The fleet/workshop manager just bought himself a new RAM a few months ago. He is from Michigan and most of his family works for Chrysler, so he has to.
