Still dreaming of a Tundra

This would be badass if you get the PRO

 

Trading in my 17 Tacoma for my 17 Tundra was a great decision. I had a 06 Tacoma for 10 Years and loved it, the 17 Tacoma was a major disappointment.

 

Change trucks like people change underwear??

Ditto Brother! i too, have a ‘17 tacoma trd sport. i dont hate it, just hate the transmission. lol....but my wife has already given me the nudge to get a bigger truck cause she wants another kid.....the tacoma is a bit too snug for two car seats in the back and we will have more of a need for a 4wd and size in the future. i plan to trade my Tacoma in this or next year for a Tundra trd with 4wd. id love to find a good used Trd Pro Tundra but who knows. for now im just here to lurk and learn before i buy.

 

I’m thinking of buying a 2015 taco trd off-road as a toy, the last year of the good engine they had. It will be my off-roader while the tundra is the hauler, then when my son is grown enough the taco will be his. The main differences between the sport and off-road tundra are the styling, the suspension is the same(brand) just different valving I think. Get whatever you can get a good deal in.

When you finally get your Tundra, you're going to wonder how you were able to survive as long as you did in a Gen 3 Taco. I don't miss my 16 Taco at all. On the other hand, I just took a mini road trip in my Tundra and couldn't be any happier with it.

 

1. if you know the diff between the tacoma OR vs Sport, its the same for the tundra
2. I converted from a 16 sport (oct-2015 build date) to a 18 plat tundra
3. mpg avg for me is about 5 mpg less than a Tacoma
4. we had the same issue as others, Tacoma was just to cramped for our situation
5. most of the issues that people have with Tacoma we didn't have with ours after TSB's were applied (transmission shift was crap before the TSB fix, the A arm whistle was resolved with a TSB, A pillar creak was never resolved)
6. overall we loved the Tacoma but the space constraints was our biggest issue (having 2-3 dogs in the backseat and 2 people in the front when hunting was impossible in the Tacoma)
7. we went with a platinum due less chrome (I think the limited you can get even less chrome, platinum comes with mirror caps and door handles chrome) and for the creature comforts
8. seats in the Tacoma should have been powered and memory (god send on the platinum since the wife and me have way different seat positions)
9. miss the push to start on the Tacoma that is not available on the platinum (but I hated the impletation on the Tacoma door sensor only on driver side)
10. led headlights/fog on the platinum are a huge improvement over the 17 tundra's, they should have had them on the Tacoma
11. miss the bed cubby holes and storage bin in the Tacoma (used the one in the Tacoma with the door to store our tie down straps
12. rear seat storage in the platinum = none compared to the Tacoma miss that a lot (this doesn't apply to the double cab tundra's)
13. the seat comfort is way better in the tundra
14. the seat heaters are just as good as the Tacoma (but the vented function in the tundra are very weak, especially compared to my 4runner)

that's just a quick off the top of my head differences

 

Well, I was closer than hair on a frogs ass from getting a White Platinum yesterday. So close! The salesman and I just couldn't get close to what I wanted to pay out the door for one. Well, maybe we will see as the year draws to an end if the truck is still available. Then the dealer will REALLY need to get rid of it. So close that I could taste it!!!

So..... STILL dreaming.....

 

My advise, or I would say just my opinion, take it for what it is worth....If you really like a truck and you are close to the price that you are willing to pay, don't let it slip through your hands. Yes, there are many more on the lots and you can get another chance for now, but eventually the dealers will run out of 2018 stock and you will have to start negotiating on a 2019, which you will not get a good deal on for quite a while. I have a friend who does this every year to himself (he buys trucks as business write-offs) He negotiate and negotiate until everyone is mad at each other, and then he walks away from the deal because they can't agree on that last $20 or something, and then all of the sudden at the end of the year he rush and pay $1,000s more just to get the deal done in time to qualify for the write-off, and at that time he can't get what he wanted anymore and end up sitting with a color or trim level that is not what he wanted. Next year he goes through the same thing again - never learns.
Just something to consider.

 

Advice and opinion well taken. I agree with you whole heartedly, problem is the dealer wasn't close to the price I was wanting. So I am still contacting dealers to find the price they are willing to sell to me. I will go from there. If it doesn't happen, then it wasn't meant to be and I keep ole trust rusty that much longer....

$20 bucks isn't a lot and I would be a fool to walk from a deal for $20. Id pay that in cash as an additional cash down... But 3-4k in difference, yeah, that I WILL walk away from, as I did yesterday.

 

What didn't you like about the Tacoma?

 

Overall performance, differential leak, ECM failure, trans solenoid failures.

I felt your pain. Bought my 16 Trd OR MT Dcsb right when they came out. The 3.5 always had me wanting more, even with a MT and after being one of the first to run the beta Orange virus tune. Just be patient and trade up! Here was my taco, I dont miss it.
BTW I was looking for a pro at first but god damn the Plats and 1794s are so nice on the inside, made the taco interior look sub par.....lifts, wheels, armor, skids etc can all be added Here was the taco.

 

It is crazy how many screen names match those from Tacomaworld on here.

 

This thread relates to me. I go back and forth trying to decide if it’s worth trading up. I have a 17’ Tacoma with a lot invested. I gambled on the regear and ovtune and I’m still not satisfied with how it drives.The gear hunting is driving me nuts. I’m sure I’ll eventually move up to a Tundra if my fam continues to grow. I have two little ones and a bulldog so the extra space would be nice.. decisions decisions.. here’s a pic of my current taco.

I can tell you from experience that your little ones will get bigger, your Taco won"t.

 

I ended up biting the bullet and sold my Taco back to the dealer. I had to pay $4500 for what I was upside down on but after 9 months, that'll be money back in my pocket. I hated my taco so much that I was willing to literally pay someone to take it off my hands. And I did so happily!!

 

True. I even have Tacoma in may screen name. I miss may Taco sometimes. Mostly when parking downtown.

 

My diff leaked and sat at Toyota for over a month. Lol. With 33s and two people it was a total slug.

 

That's a real nice looking truck ..yeah you got a hard decision to make.

 

When the time comes that you eventually get a Tundra, you're going to wonder what took you so long.

As a general statement, after having owned a Gen 3 Taco, I can't see any reason why anyone should buy a Taco instead of a Tundra. Ok, the Taco gets better gas mileage, but if you're pinching pennies over gas, then a Corolla would be a better investment than any pickup truck. People say "but the Tundra is just too big", which is what I said, and what led me to the Taco. But now that I'm in a Tundra, I realize the error of my ways. You quickly acclimate to the larger size and you're basically in a truck that can do anything the Taco does but much better. Except maybe sneak into a small parking spot. It's got more power and a much, much better engine, a much better transmission, and more room to do whatever you want. There might be price differences but if you get a basic Tundra SR5 you're not going to be far off a Taco TRD Off Road in terms of out the door price. I cannot recommend the Tundra enough.

I'll add, I took a hit trading up to the Tundra. But it was worth every penny and I have no regrets. I love my truck!

 

Right on man, I’ve always had a soft spot for Tacoma’s. I had a 08 (with the same setup) that treated me very well with no issues. 2 years owning my 17’ I like everything about it except the way it drives haha. But I’ve always said if I get another truck it would be a Tundra. With gas not being an issue I may start looking hard towards the end of the year to find a deal on a 18’. I would have traded out a lot sooner but fell into trying to fix Toyota’s problem by regearing and tuning. Live and learn I guess.
