Hey guys I’m having a small issue with my 01 tundra with the 4.7 where at idle it starts running a little hot while sitting in traffic for a while. I have replaced the fan clutch, radiator, radiator cap, and thermostat all within the last 17k miles and it’s all been within the past couple months. Also when it does start running hot the ac stops blowing cold. As soon as I get going again the ac is freezing again and the truck runs like a top. This problem only occurs when I have the ac blowing it seems. I have some mechanical ability but this one really has me stumped. Thank you for any help.

I would be looking at the water pump. Your not getting good circulation.

If it was the water pump wouldn’t it be overheating all the time? The hoses are all firm while it’s running showing there is pressure.

I have not noticed any leaks. coolant level seems to stay the same.

No, not necessarily. When your moving you have good airflow and additional RPM from the motor which propels the pump.

Alright thanks for the tip I’m thinking that’s going to be next on my list whether it’s bad or not because I need to do the timing belt service too.

Tag me when you reply. I’m really interested in the outcome. You have replaced everything but the pump.

I have seen clutch fans bad out of the box...happened to me. Did you get a new one from Toyota or get a parts store replacement?

I got it from autozone back in November I believe it was 17,000 miles ago I replaced it and it’s seemed to work fine. That is definitely something I will check though.

Would like to know if the water pump did it for you. I'm in the exact same situation, I've handled it lately by throwing it in park and reving the engine lightly. My radiator seems great, no leaks, no coolant loss. Fan works. It won't heat up with the air conditioner on full blast as long as I'm driving, but within about 5 minutes of sitting still the temp starts creeping up, and the air conditioner isnt cold. In a cold rainy day with the defroster on I couldn't even get the temp to drop by cycling the engine, it wasn't even hot outside.

Maybe check your condenser to see if it's pluged, no air flow? 17 years of bugs?

    Resurrecting an old thread -
My wife's 2004 Sequoia 4.7 L will over heat in traffic on a hot day.
I replaced the fan clutch earlier this year , new belt too.
The dealer replaced the thermostat last year .
Other than replacing the radiator , any other suggestions?
I was thinking about bypassing the electric fan in the front of the radiator and just having it on a switch to run constantly.

First I’d check if the radiator is holding pressure. While you have the engine running and it’s all warmed up try squeezing the radiator hoses. They should be firm. Also when was the last time you had the water pump done? From my experience the fan clutches have been extremely unreliable. I don’t know if it’s just me but I’ve gone through 3 of them in 40k miles. I just gave up with those things and I’m converting it to run electric fans.

yep bank account is running low from it..
Warning with electric fans... If you do convert over to electric fans you need a manual bypass and a alarm at say 220 temp reading just in case the module fails to kick on and warps heads.

The truck almost overheated when we were driving offroad to Silver City , I had to put it in 4LO and let the engine spin up to keep the fan moving air .
Unfortunately , I cant do that in rush hour traffic at 90* .
Im really thinking an electric conversion is the best option.

Maybe you just got a bunk clutch fan. From what I’ve seen electric fans just don’t do the job that a clutch fan will. Switching to electric fans doesn’t solve your problem it’s only a Band-Aid unless the clutch fan was at fault to begin with.

Pressure from heat not from circulation. I feel you have a flow problem, take the cap off (when cold) to see if you see circulation of antifreeze after the tstat opens. At first antifreeze will overflow out the cap then drop and you will see it flowing. We had a Corolla’s impeller slipping on the shaft after the engine got hot. Hope this helps.

When I was in a drive thru line not paying attention on a 100+ degree day it got hot enough to actually make it in the red zone which led me to the pinhole leak spewing steam from the radiator. No big surprise after replacing the radiator, hoses, and thermostat (because why not I'm already in there) it fixed my overheating issue. So to those asking what it could be, I would suggest a pressure test to start. Really should have been the first thing I did. Lucky for me no blown head gaskets or any other triggered issues (thanks to my Dad and youtube for teaching me how to replace a radiator when I was young)

Not over heating while driving due to air flowing. At idle no air thus it overheats. Its a good suggestion.

Are you relying on the factory temperature gauge? They are wildly inaccurate.

A Scan tool plugged into the OBDII port will give you a true water temperature.

BTW, doesn't the Sequoia comes factory with an electric fan in addition to the belt driven fan?
