Help figure out license plate mounting

I have an ADD hedgehog bumper with a winch and I am trying to figure out where to mount a front plate. In my town having a plate will save me the pain of being pulled over. Is there a bracket or does anyone have any ideas?

 

I would find threaded bolts and put them going thru the bumper out the front. Put on license plate then thread a nut on the top side of license plate. Double nuts if you scurred.

 

There’s simpler ones that snap onto the rollers on a roller fairlead but this is what I’ve got

I designed this for a buddy, the big holes are mounting to your bumper. It replaces your current metal guard on your bumper. All I would need from you is the mounting hole spacing and the hole size where the wench cable comes through. PM if your interested and we can discuss in more detail..

 

there is a notch on the bottom where the cable will be able to sit under the license plate (I'm not at work to give the latest iteration but you get the idea...)

 

Will it fit on the flat area under the right shackle? Or will they say that it is obscured by the shackle? You could just use 3M double sided tape to put it there.

 

As long as its visible, I don't think it will matter (I could be wrong).

 

My buddy hits trails quite often. He likes that it is a one for one replacement for the existing metal bracket. When he hits trails, he will take the plate off (put the pins back in the bracket) and when he hits to road to go home, puts the plate back on.

I'm not promoting anything, just thought I would share my design.

 

The lazy part of me says zip tie it to the upper tube.

The slightly less lazy part says get some magnets like the dealers use and stick it above the winch.

I installed my front plate on the lower passenger side windshield. I used these suction cup license frame mounts. You will need to see if that’s legal to have your front plate there or not. But it’s only a 98 cent part.

 

Again just for funzies, I am posting this to show what my buddy and I came up with

I like your idea but I’ve got another suggestion. Why not just simply take the stock fair lead and drill two holes on the bottom edge below the recovery rope. Then use a thread tap to make threads for the two bolts to fasten the plate.

 

Valid point. Redesign to put your own touch is always fun I guess

Sometimes I can’t help myself. Lol I have a few other ideas. I always have my creative designer mind working overtime.

What about making either a bracket that mounts over the fairlead or a new bracket all together. The fairlead can have a license plate bracket that allows the license plate to mount to it and slide down when you need access to the recovery hook. The idea behind the bracket would be to have your license plate covering the fairlead during regular driving conditions and allow it to slide down when you need access to the hook.

 

Tuffy kind of makes something like that. It flips up instead of sliding but sameish principle.

You beat me to it, I was just going to post that first one. This might be the best option; at least what I would consider if it was mine. Price seems reasonable too.

 

So my intent is to fabricate a whole new fairlead. Also, it will have quick release pins so the plate can be removed when wheeling and/or when the wench is needed.

My buddy likes it because when you need to use the wench, your by the fairlead so pulling 2 quick release pins to remove the plate isn't terrible. As a mechanical engineer I hate slotted holes which would be needed to make a slide style.

I love all the ideas. I need to check to see what the Oregon law actually says about where it should go. Magnets are nice because I can remove it easily when I want to. I have until November to figure it out and I am in no rush. I wish I didn’t have to need to install a front
